L'oreal Vive Pro Nutri Gloss conditioner - I might be in love!
Browsing through the shelves at my local Wal Mart, I was looking for a protein-rich conditioner that was CG as well. You would be AMAZED to find that there are about three that didn't cost an arm and a leg (Nexxus Keraphix was my next choice because they didn't carry Emergencee, but at 17 bucks just wasn't an option this week).
After about ten minutes of ingredient scouring, a pair of very sore eyes, and a headache the size of the Eiffel Tower, I had a yellow bottle of L'oreal Vive Pro Hydra Gloss in my hands when I spotted a Barbie doll pink bottle on the bottom shelf, almost hiding. It said "pearl protein complex" and "for medium to long hair with curls or waves". Well YAY! That's me! Best of all?? NO CONES!!!
I got to try it for the first time tonight. It's thick - VERY thick. And very rich and creamy-feeling. It has a light floral scent, but it's not overpowering (I'm not a big fan of florals, and I didn't object at all). The best thing though, was when I went to brush it through with my Denman. There weren't ANY tangles! It was like they just dissolved! Then, when I rinsed it out, it was just...gone. No residue or slimy feel at all, but still soft and silky. Clean feeling, but well-conditioned.
And when I went to brush my KY in, my Denman slipped right through. That never happens when I have nothing but water in my hair. NEVER!
Now yes, in the recent past I used sulfates and cones, but even the conditioners with dimethicone that I was using didn't feel this good. I'm really hoping that my hair can cope with this conditioner just a little while...until I can make my $150 KBB order! :laughing1:

I like the (now discontinued) Vive Smooth Intense Mask. I was interested in this new Vive Pro line since it has received a lot of buzz and the ingredients looked good. Once a good sale hits, I'm def. going to buy--your recommendations always work well for me, BB. Keep us posted!
I found this Curl Chemist article:
http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curly-q-a/curlchemist-amodimethicone-and-other-amine-functionalized-silicones
But I think this is the most important paragraph in order to understand the big question that lays heavy on all CGs minds - will it build up?
"Once the amine-functional silicone is deposited onto the surface of the hair, it spreads out and forms a cross linked film when it dries. This cross linked film can last through several washings, which is considered to be advantageous in most applications. A unique property of these polymers is that once in place on the surface of the hair, they repel further deposition of amine-functional polymers on top of the existing layer, preventing buildup. This cross-linked film seals moisture inside the hair shaft, holding the cuticle flat and providing excellent wet and dry comb-ability. An additional benefit of these silicones over other cationic polymers (such as polyquats) is their high refractive index, which gives the hair a high degree of gloss and shine."
And if you have a few minutes, a quick read through this thread can help to straighten things out even further.

So from what I understand, amodimethicone is fairly specialized and pretty hard to build up. Of course, every curly is different, and it can build up on some, but it's unlikely given its chemical composition and properties.
There! We have what seems to be an answer! *lol*

Anyway, the one I just got is absolutely CG! Now that I know how it makes my hair feel (yummy, soft, and totally touchable, BTW!), and that it gives me great definition and curls even when I air dry (!), you had better believe I'll be getting more next week when we go shopping again. Besides - right now, it's a bonus-sized bottle with the big "33% more free" banner on it. So double yay!
Oh yeah - and I plopped overnight an then air dried the rest of the way, and I haven't done that in months because any water left behind just elongates my curls. Not this time! Maybe it isn't as curly as it would have been if I had plopped until dry or pixiecurled, but it's still nothing to be ashamed of - I'd totally wear it in public!

Apparently the a-cone isn't so water soluable. Something to keep in mind for future products...HATE: plopping, FOTE on wet hair, BRHG
Hey Mims! Yeah, I knew it wasn't water soluble, but knowing that made me wonder why so much Deva stuff used it. Apparently it's the tendency it has to not build up, what with its chemical composition and all. I can see how you'd need at least coco-betaine to remove it if it did build up on you, or you wanted to clarify and remove all traces of cones though.
I'm just gonna hope that the formula of this one hasn't really been changed and keep buying it as long as it doesn't!

MY.
GAWD.
Ok, many (if not all) of you know that I have horrendous tangling issues on the underside of my hair where it rubs against my shoulders, right? Well, get this - I was about to get ready for bed and plop a pineapple, like I always do. I instinctively went to grab my brush to detangle that section before wetting it for plopping, when I realized...THERE AREN'T ANY TANGLES!!!
My hair is still silky soft and smooth, and I didn't use any cones! Cripes - even when I WAS using cones, they never worked this well. Aw crap...now I'm gonna have to buy every bottle of this stuff until I see the a-cone in the ingredient list. *lol* DH is gonna have a FIT!
whatsercurl, you might want to give this stuff a shot anyway. It's THAT good.
LL, I'm kind of surprised you found the scent to be too strong. Do you have a sensitive sniffer? I actually thought it was a little muted as opposed to most haircare products.

Yeah, it's thick. But it distributes really nicely despite that. I was just in shock last night when I reached for the brush and then found out I didn't need it! It was amazing!

Isnt the yellow bottle also for curly but fine? I cannot remember.

Well, yellow is Hydra Gloss, and pink is Nutri Gloss. They had two varieties of pink - one was medium to long hair with curls or waves, and the other was for straight hair, but I don't recall if it was for fine hair or not. My poor head was spinning by the time I finally found what I was looking for - too many ingredient lists will do that to you!

I checked the ingredients and since I'm not a chemist, it looks pretty scary (alcohol and palm oil were the only things that I could understand, and I don't think either of them are ideal).
I'll keep checking this thread to see how it goes for you guys, maybe I'll give it another shot.

Not all alcohols are bad/drying ones - in fact, there are quite a few in conditioners that are fatty alcohols that actually help your hair. The palm oil I don't recall seeing, but I can check my bottle again in a bit. Does it say hydrogenated or PEG- in front of it? Because that would make a difference too.
I've gotten pretty good at reading ingredients, and I don't remember seeing anything (not even polyquats) that raised a red flag for me, but like I said, my head was spinning at the time, and I may have missed something. I think I was just more shocked than anything else that a new conditioner formula that claimed to leave your hair with a mirror shine didn't have a single cone in it! :toothy10:

I'm new to reading ingredients and don't have a clue what's good and what isn't most of the time, so I'm sure you're right on this.
The ingredients are: water, behentrimonium chloride, stearyl alcohol & cetyl alcohol, palm oil, glycerin, and the rest is just too much to type, lol.
Anyway, if it's working that's all that matters. I'm all for finding something cheap and local, I could have had something nice for all the money I've spent on shipping charges for products in the last couple of weeks!
3a/b, med texture, med porosity, low dews
I don't have my bottle right here, but that sounds right to me. The stearyl and cetyl alcohols are fatty ones - they're fine (more info on them at www.jessicurl.com, if you're interested).
The palm oil...that I'm not sure about. I suppose any oil could build up on anyone, but how to know who it will build up on and how long it'll take? Combine that with the fact that I don't recall anyone ever talking about it here since I've been around, and I'm kind of left with a huge question mark over my head.
I guess I know what I'll be researching today!

I don't know.
When buying something it may smell good in the bottle, but once used it may linger on the hair or the more it's sniffed from the bottle it may be too strong.
Maybe the day of purchase I had allergy problems that made me stuffy & muted my sense of smell. Maybe my sense of smell was affected by something else, making it more sensitive. :dontknow:
I just hope that it's not true that the formula has changed to include amodimethicone. It works awesome without it! If anyone has proof either way on this, please let us know!

You had me right here, BB! After catching your hairstick vid (darling lil girl you've got, btw!!), it seems like our hair texture may be similar. I can definitely feel ya on what I call the "rat's nape nest". It drives me nuts, and like you, I *have* to dry brush/detangle that area if it's gonna be anything like detangled after a co wash. Thanks for the rec, and for all the knowledge you've shared!

As far as posting all the time, it's my pleasure. I'm a SAHM with a little time to kill here and there, and I know there are a LOT more lurkers than posters here, so I just try to help out when and where I can. Also, since I can't afford the high-buck stuff all the time (here and there as a present to myself, but not on a regular basis - that's for sure!), I figure my grocery and drugstore experiments might come in handy for somebody! Besides - I know that I learned a lot from tons of other regulars here, and I feel like I kinda owe the board, KWIM? :toothy10:
