I finally got the hang of it, 3rd day hair!

in Hair Type 3
So I've been stalking lots of fotki's trying to figure out how to stop co-washing everyday. I've tried everything from hair spritzers, satin hair bonnets and pillowcases. For me, the satin does prevent the dryness but didn't help much with keeping the curls intact. My hair is still smooshed and matted when I wake-up the next day. I look like I stuck my finger in a light socket. lol. I finally figured out that in order for me to get 2nd day hair and so forth, I have to follow this routine:
1. Get in the shower.
2. Wet hair(cup water in one hand and rake or scrunch through hair)
3. Repeat until hair is damp. Not dripping.
4. Rake and smooth in styler while in the shower. No need to section the hair.
5. If desired, layer a hair gel over leave-in once out of the shower.
6. Fluff with fingers or shake.
This has worked great for me. I'm on my 3rd hair day. I never knew it could be possible and so SIMPLE. I was trying way too hard. Yay! :toothy7:

I get the least amount of frizz with this method. Using the spritzers is pointless for me. I have to use way too much of whatever it is and I still have to wet it enough to be able to run my fingers through to get rid of the frizz and encourage clumping. This is easier for me to do in the shower while everything else is wet. lol. I haven't tried MS since forever. I will have to revisit using this method. Even with my protein sensitivity, I can't remember being sensitive to the "milk proteins" in this one. It was quite moisturizing.
ETA-I can remember it taking my hair all day to air dry with the Curls MS/AO MM combo. I will try with a different hair gel to see if I get a different result. I wasn't able to use it alone. I've been using the BC line and it works great on 2nd, 3rd day hair for me.

If your hair is just damp, it shouldn't take long to dry. The thing I use now and swear by is [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-Set-it-Free-p-259.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-set-it-free]Devacurl Set it Free[/buylink]. I use a little on dry hair with another moisture lotion. But a couple of weeks ago it rained on me so my hair was wet/damp from the rain. I sprayed SIF right on and raked. I never spray it, but it brought back my curls.

Now, that is what I'm talking about. Yay! This has only happened to me merely by accident, too. Only when I wasn't trying to get 2nd day hair! It also depends a lot on what leave-in I use on the day that I co-washed. No need to make my hair a hard hat with a gel or spritz. My curls tend to bounce back easier with leave-ins like SheaMoisture or Kiehl's. I get springier, defined curls with these leave-ins. It is more work for me with leave-ins heavier in oils like Curls and Swirls and BMU, but these are the most moisturizing on 2nd, 3rd day hair.

Note: It does not happen so much with a creamy base as opposed to using a gel. I only get multiple hair days with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]/Curlisto Gels/Eco Styler Gel/Long Aid CAG.... So, that may be why it is so hard for you to get multiple hair days. You are a very soft haired curly. And when I am going that route it does not happen often like you said.
I always sleep on the satin pillowcase and wear, if applicable, the satin bonnet. And the above still determines whether or not I will be able to fluff and go without cowashing.

See......I wish I could just spritz the squished areas and go about my business like that but :angry7:. I think your right, because I am a soft haired curly and I don't use a lot of hair gel I'm always :boxing: 2nd day hair frizz! Basically, what your saying is HOLD is the key factor to being able to spritz on day two because the curls are more intact, right? If that's true then maybe this is as close as I'll ever get to 2nd, 3rd day hair using my current method. Are you using those hair gels successfully with BB?

First off, those emoticons fighting is cracking me up!!
And you hit the nail on the head. I am definitely talking about HOLD!! And how you described is exactly how it happens and how it makes it possible to spritz and go. By that time, my crunchier curls are pretty soft like your 1st hair day curls are. But the holding power in the gel, even though it is softer the 2nd day, still has to ability to continue for a few days before all the holding power is lost from the product.
I think that creamier/buttery based product use only will lead to some surface frizz and some nonrevivable (made that word up) curls the next day without taking extra measures. If creams are my choice, then I would probably only mist and try to reform the loss curls in the shower. But it usually means that I either have to just start all over, or if it (hair) is long enough that is a sure thing for a pony puff or ponytail.
Uhm, the answer to your question would be NO!!:evil4: BB/BC is still not a cooperating partner for non-BB/BC products. This is one line that you cannot seem to cheat on with gels. And is probably why she has the CFP(udding) instead of a gel. She has probably already crashed and burned too many times trying to formulate a gel to play with her current product line unsuccessfully.:stop:

Thanks for that clarification but I have another question for you. What do you think is the difference between spritzing your hair to death until it is dripping and starting all over? At least with my method the hair is only damp. I have read in lots of posts that some CG's are spritzing until the hair is soaking wet. Why not just start over? How much is enough? At this point can you really call this 2nd day hair? I just assumed that 2nd day hair means that you don't co-wash the next day but how far can you take that concept? What is really 2nd day hair? More clarification, please! :usa2:

Teshon!! You have the concept of what 2nd day hair is. To me, 2nd day hair is not soaking your hair with a leave-in or a spritz. I lightly spritz mine. When I say lightly, I mean lightly. It is so light that my hair is dry within 30 minutes to an hour tops. Maybe to describe what I mean, I should say I MIST my hair.
If you are dousing your hair with water or spritz, in my book you may as well cowash. That is a waste of product to have your hair dripping from a curl refresher leave-in/detangler like BB KFC. Even on the bottle, it says hold away from hair at least 6 inches and spritz like 6 times.
If my hair is in that bad of shape, I just cowash it. It is easier to start over and have a great hair day than to put all that stuff in my hair for a mediocre at best hair day. I can say that [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] reactivates easily and does not need a lot to help those little areas wake up.
Mist and spritz are used interchangeably in my vocabulary. I mist my hair like I would mist my face or mist perfume on. That is a good example of how I mean I refresh my curls...a light dusting of moisture. And the areas that may have suffered minute curl loss, I add a little product there to encourage those few curls further,if spritzing is not enough. But those are areas/curlies that I missed giving enough product for hold. If I have to do that to more than 5 to 10 curls, then I will head in for the pony puff instead. If it is beyond a ponypuff, then just start all over, because you are no longer dealing with viable 2nd day hair.
In my book, anything more, is not 2nd day hair. There would have to be another term for it, because this concept no longer applies. It should be easy and not that involved.

I know for myself sometimes 2nd day hair doesn't even always involve a misting, i just fluff and go if it feels right. Now don't get me wrong i will sacrifice a good hair day for health so if it feels dry i'm going to correct it which if i've used the right products doesn't take much. I'm going on 3rd day hair now with curly q [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]milkshake[/buylink]&BB curl styling butter, it actually still feels good. That's what i basically look for, but you're right it does come down to what works for you. I know if my 2nd or 3rd, ect..hair didn't look good then i wouldn't even bother with it.
