Probably the only bad review for SheaM Leave-in

My hair just didn't like it!! I was very disappointed, especially since I kinda psyched myself out about it waiting for it (bargainside.com=slooooow shipping).

It was hard to distribute, it didn't feel that moisturizing, and for some reason I'm not aware of, it took the hold out of my gel.. :scratch: I only used it twice, but both times my curls were really loose and kinda large (large in a bad way). I use HESMU, which I usually have to scrunch the crunch out of, too. Weird.

Anyways, unfortunately, this leave-in that like, EVERYONE has been raving about didn't work for me :(

    You are not alone, it did not work for me either. It did the same thing to my hair and I would also have to shampoo my hair the next day since it seemed to leave it feeling greasy and heavy with just co washing (and I have thick, colored 3a hair).

    I kind of wonder if the weather comes into play with how this product performs. We were in a cold snap when I got mine, and I had WONDERFUL hair days w/ this. Then it got unseasonably warm, high 60's and kind of humid, and my hair was a droopy mess. I am totally and completely still in love w/ SheaM, but am thinking it is strictly a winter/cold weather product.

    I love mine in the winter, it's my HG. But I stopped using it all summer for the same reasons as the OP, it's just too heavy. But I wonder if it would work better for you if you dilute/cut it with a lighter leave in or condish?     Whew... I was waiting for some one else to say it! It is hard to distribute and hard to get out of the bottle. I don't want to work that hard for conditioner. I also found that it did not help clump my curls like other leave-ins and my gel felt strange. I did find it to be very moisturizing though, but it was too much work!

    My first bottle was like that. But both of the ones I have received since are not as thick and easier to squirt out of the bottle. The first bottle I got...I took the cap off and just squeezed it out that way, and I kept it upside down on my shelf.
    I would advise cutting it with a thinner leave in if it's too heavy for you. That's the reason it works for me. Suburbanbushbabe dilutes hers with AVG I believe. I cut mine with WDT or TooShea or in a pinch White Boots if that's all I have handy. I also found it's easier to distribute in super soaking hair if you are a 3a like me.

    I guess I just don't think mine is as thick as people are describing it.. and definitely not as hard to distribute. Then again, I only use one short ribbon, emulsified between wet hands, and applied to soaking wet hair, and then as I work it in I can feel it being distributed. I think my AOHR is thicker.

    I used to love this leave in. Now my hair only curls well when I use protien. I hate it because this leave in used to work so well for me. You might try mixing a smaller amount with water or another condish. That's what I used to do and it worked much better that way.

    I'm so sad that it didn't work for some of you guys. :crybaby: I love this stuff but I did have some complications layering it with some hair gels, also. It can feel really coated when used with the wrong hair gel. This is not foreign to me. I totally understand. Then again, I'm not a serious hair gel user. The only gel that I found that worked successfully when layered over the SheaM. is AO MM. I use it some of the time, most times nothing. I usually apply my SheaM. to the center of my head first working outward. This is the 4A-ish part of my hair. This method has worked for me and I get beautiful hair days with SheaMoisture using it straight. It is more work(thicker) than my Kiehl's leave-in, though. Although, I'm enjoying using it now, I'll definitely be storing it away during the summer months!

    I'll definitely be storing it away during the summer months!

    Believe it or not SM became the summer/high humidity solution for me when none of my other products were working. Everything else would result in frizz sooner or later except for SM (alone or mixed with AV gel/juice) under AOMM or John Masters Gel or Angell or PM Round Trip. I actually relied on it more in the summer than I do now.

    Yeah, the Shea Moisture worked pretty well for me in the summer. My hair seems to really like shea leave-ins when it's hot and humid. But it's not working for me now, not even as a rinse out. I haven't tried mixing it with aloe though.

    Usually it balances out for me...I bought a lot of stuff in the summer that was disappointing but turned out great for my current cold weather!

    I have used this product about five different times now (all with different products and routines) and have found that it really does nothing for my hair. I had high hopes for it, but it didn't make the cut for me. It's not that it made my hair look worse, its just that it really didn't make a difference at all for me. It didn't even feel like I had put anything into my hair...no slipperyness, smoothness, or clumpiness. :wink:

    I was really dissapointed. :(

    I have yet to find a hair twin ANYWHERE...website or real life :(

    Current routine: Um, I don't feel like updating my siggie every thirty minutes. :) I'm experimenting right now! (loving the overnight plop!)

    I'm still trying to feel this out too. I wouldn't say I hate it just yet but it makes my hair way too soft which for me leads to poofy undefined curls since it seems to take the hold out of my stylers.

    I'm not a big fan of this either, so don't feel bad!
    3a/3b thick coarse WL dark brown hair. CG/Mod CG since: 5/4/05. Current products: Right now my hair is in such a tizzy over this winter weather we are hving that nothing really seems to be working. I need a haircut.

    I really enjoy the SheaM. However like some of you have posted it can leave your hair feeling a little coated at times. But that is when I have used just a little too much of it. I have found that it is best used in conjunction with only one styler and cannot be layered with a whole lot. If you are using a creamy styler with this leave-in, you are doing yourself a disservice. I have found more success with using it with a strong/firm hold gel. This leave-in has some hold on its own, but will "eat" up a soft hold gel. So, using too much can cause your curls to droop and look sort of homeless. If I use too much, then my hair is duller, but not totally dull and it leaves it unusually thick and unruly...sorta poofy looking and crunchy curls.

    I think the thick consistency is what I like about this leave-in. I will have to see how it works in the summer months. But it is doing very well in the cooler ones for me right now.

    I am almost tempted to say that this Leave-in is really a styler. It is thick enough to be. I think that is why some have had a harder time figuring this one out. I think it works better as a styler for those that don't like it as a leave-in. And when used as a styler, it is best to use a liquid leave-in under it or nothing at all. It already is chock-full of moisturizing ingredients as is.

    It is wonderful, because you can do so many different things with it! But just because of the majority like it, does not mean that everyone will. I ran into that with BB products. You just have to keep searching for something that your hair does like. And there is a lot of fun in that, if you ask me.

    I so glad you posted this. I got my SheaM and have been trying it with different stylers- but used Recoil too. Now I am thinking that is why it isn't quite working for me.

    Okay tried it tonight without the recoil- just SheaM, BE gel and a bit of Joici Icewhip or whatever it is called now. Loving the results.

    LOL thanks. Only downside to this wonderful discovery is that the great curls it gave me made my overall hair length shrink a couple of inches so I feel like I just took a step back in the growth area.

    With all the moisture, it is definitely a curl enhancer. I have shrinkage no matter what I use. Your lucky to only lose a couple of inches. I lose half my hairs length. :laughing9:

    You're not the only one. I like it for how soft my hair can feel after a day or so, but no matter how little I use, I get a coated look feel. Very dull. Like I used a rinse out conditioner as my leave in.

    I used this product before over 2 yrs ago , and revisited it since I still had some left. But it gave me the same results.

    Doesn't do it for me, but that's how it goes. Some products work well for some, not so well for others.
    A wonderful mix of coils, curls, corkscrews, and kinks.

    This product didn't do anything for me. If anything, my hair was more frizzy and out of control than it is without it.
