Growing hair for donation

in Growing out
I've always wanted to grow my hair out long enough to donate to Locks of Love. The last time I tried to grow it, my ends were absolutely awful, and I decided to chop them all off - about 2" of damage. Back then I was still straightening though, and apparently using the wrong products for my hair type. This time I want to do it the right way, and have healthy hair. I'm almost to the point where it will be getting into that "awkward" stage. Luckily my hair is a bit less awkward when I wear it curly. Right now it's just above my shoulders, so I have quite a bit of length to grow before I can do this. Right now I'm having a hard time knowing what to do with my hair, since I can't exactly put it up for bed, and if I stuff it into a sleep cap, I wake up with my hair standing straight up. I'm getting the moisture under control very slowly, so it's definitely not as dry as it used to be. I just wish I could snap my fingers and it'll be long tomorrow. lol
Has anybody ever grown their hair out specifically for this purpose? Any tips of keeping my hair healthy would be appreciated, especially at this awkward stage right now.

Hi! Yes, I have (a couple times actually). I donated 18" in Mar of '12 and it has grown back even stronger! The best thing I have found to protect my ends is coconut oil. The night before my wash days (shampoo or CO days) I put coconut oil on my ends, wrap it in a cap and wash it out in the morning
If you are a night washer, do the same thing for about an hour before your shower! GL and it is the best feeling in the world to know you helped another person

Shampoo: Shea Moisture Chamomile & Argan Oil
CO wash: Suave Apple conditioner (1:1)
LI: Sauve Coconut (1:1 & coconut oil)
When my hair was long, pony tails were very heavy unless they were at the nape so I braided my hair at night after a shower. I found satin pillowcases to be expensive, but I hear those work. Also when I grow out unless it looks really bad, I skipped the hair dresser. I always had a feeling of when my hair needed a trim so I did that myself
Since I usually straighten my hair when it's short, I do weekly PTs and DTs using heat to really get into the cuticle. And when I have absolutely no plans of leaving my home I don't mess with my hair. The best conditioner for your hair is it's own oils and I have gone a few days not washing so it can benefit from that too.
I've always found that healthy hair is best with as little product and manipulation as possible.

They are non profit. They have to break even each year, but they need the money to make the pieces. They sell hair that they cannot be use bit can be used elsewhere such as gray hair. The wigs value upwards of 6000$, so they need money to pay for those materials and not all the kids are given wigs, some family do pay, but it depends on a sliding scale.

I think it's something we will continue to do bc she likes her curly hair at her shoulder blades instead of under her butt. lol!
