Will sulfate free shampoo still give good results?

I co wash twice a week now and am thinking about throwing in a sulfate free cleanser for clarifying every once in a while. I was wondering if that will still be CG and keep my curls the same. What do you think? My curls have gotten much curlier and healthier with the CG method so I would love to keep them that way. 😊

Adding a low poo shouldn't harm the progress you've made. In fact, I find its nice to "reset" it occasionally.

Ok thank you 😊 any drugstore and sulfate free ones in mind? The only local stores I have in my city are HEB, Walmart, and dollar stores.

I actually started out co-washing only but my hair is very fine and it became ridiculous (was cowashing every two days). I decided to switch to a sulfate free shampoo and after trying a couple landed on Shea Moisture coconut and hibiscus. I really like it and even though the bottles are small it lasts me over a yr (and I use it once a week so if you only used it on occasion it might last you longer). I did notice a difference in my hair but it was a good difference. It was definitely a cleaner (but not squeaky clean) feeling and didn't feel weighed down as it was when I co-washed. I also think its made my hair softer/more moisturized. The big seller for me was my scalp. With cowashing my scalp would feel so heavy and itchy after just one day...now I can go a week or a week and half without any problems. So I think it's helped get build up and stuff off that cowashing just couldn't do.

Thank you Pufff for the recommendation I just might try it. I do not have fine hair but hopefully it works for my full 3b curls too! :) Did it change your curl pattern?

I'm gonna be honest here, I found strict cowashing left my hair limpish, but it was good when I was starting and needed to focus on moisturizing and babying my damaged/dry/dry/dry hair. But I prefer to alternate cleansing conditioners with lowpoos with an occasional clarifying shampoo every few months (like before I get my hair dyed).

You do not have to fear lowpoos that are good quality and non-stripping. (I know there are folks who love Come Clean by Kinky Curly, but I found it made my hair tangly and crazy-squeaky.) So, we're all different, and you should find what your hair likes.

Lots of us started CG and moved on to modifying it to our needs. My fine hair does better with more cleansing at the roots to keep it from flattening out/limping down. But I like to conditioner wash the mid-to-ends to keep them moisturized.

Try lowpooing occasionally, see how it goes. If your hair doesn't like it, you can always stop. :D

The cleansers I use are the CJ Daily Fix and Gentle Cleanser; the Jessicurl Cleansing Cream (used to use the Gentle Lather, but prefer the CJ); As I AM cowash; Abba PUre Gentle poo--especially if a scalp itchiness/allergy shows up; for stronger cleaning I use two Elucence--the moisturizing shampoo (smells like peaches, peach colored) and the clarifying one (green). I bought my Green bottle (clarifying) in 2010, and it's still more than half-full, cause I don't clarify often. :) But it's there when I need it.

It's very beneficial to low poo once in a while, especially if you have hard water. I low poo once a week or so, when my hair gets that too-producty feeling. I use DC low poo, but will be looking for a drugstore after this is gone (which seems is going to last me forever).

I like Organix products. I think all their shampoos are sulfate free. I currently use the Biotin/Collagen line and I know those are sulfate free. The organix products are the only sulfate free products that won't weigh my hair down or make it feel dirty/built up. However, if you are strictly following the CG method, most Organix products are not CG friendly because they do have cones in them.

Personally I don't co-wash, because I find the shampoo I use very moisturising (and it has great CG ingredients). It's the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus. My hair always feels so lovely after using it - clean, hydrated and healthy :)

I don't co-wash either. I alternate between the SM mentioned here already and the CJ Assurance Gentle Cleansing shampoo.

KC Come Clean is a harsh shampoo. In use it for clarifying build up. For low poos I like Yes to Cucumbers Color Protection. (the one in the smaller bottle with the sloped lid. The other is harsher)
Salt & pepper wavy mix 2B/2C
Low to normal porosity, coarse, kinky, normal elasticity
    Current favorites:
Low poo: Yes To Cukes Color Protection (the no sulfate one)
Conditioners: Renpure MPHIP, CJ Smoothing Lotion, AB LI, CJ Curl Rehab, CJ Argan/Olive, Darcy's Pumpkin
    Style: FSG, BRHG
Pre-poo/DT: Conditioner with honey & coconut oil

    Just saw this.
Not that I noticed but honestly I hadn't really thought about it. My hair always felt 'heavier' when I co-washed. One thing I did notice since switching to a low-poo is that my curls are perkier after I wash. But that might also be because I put product in my hair everyday (rarely do I get 2nd day hair) so of course I'm going to notice when all that buildup of product is gone. It might be different for you since your curls aren't fine, but I also think co-washing contributed to my hair gradually becoming over-conditioned too. Simply cause I did it so much.
