Product help?!

Hi guys! I have been a long time lurker on the CG forums and I have a question. I have type 2c hair, low porosity, high density hair. On The forums and the site it seems to recommend gels for my type of hair but I really dislike gel. I hate the crunchiness that I seem to always experience. What would you guys recommend for me to get definition and softness without my hair being crunchy or looking slightly wet?

Welcome! There are many different types of gel/ jelly, not just one hard drying kind. Start reading ingredients lists and select your products according to that. A flaxseed or okra jelly is different to a commercial hard hold gel containing no humectants which is different again to a commercial gel which is rich in humectants (glycerin and proplylene glycol are common).

The more leave in conditioner you apply under the gel usually the softer the hold, other than that simply scrunch out any crunch when hair is dry ,that is part of the Curly Girl method.

Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.

There are tons of products out there to experiment with. In the beginning of my hair journey, I was dead set against using gels (had never used them before) because of the crunch, I tried creams, jelly, pudding, conditioner only styling, etc etc. what I found out is that nothing has the hold of a gel and that I absolutely need that crunch in order to fight frizz and keep my clumps intact all day.

I highly suggest either okra or flax seed gel. They are clumping magicians. They don't have enough hold for me alone, so I always top with a hard hold gel, but for your hair the hold may be fine.

Depending on the condition of your hair, curl creams may work but on super fine hair I think they may tend to weigh it down. (Sorry, I can't see your properties at the moment). I like AG recoil and CJ coffee coco lite.

Also, you could use a curl cream plus a light hold gel. Neither will leave your hair crunch, but the combination of them may provide enough hold.

    Good luck!

I know the feeling--but once your hair dries and you scrunch out the crunch (SOTC) your curls will be amazingly soft! For me, gel is now the most important product--the trick is just leaving my hair ALONE while it's drying. And my state (NE) has had unusually high dewpoints recently, which has meant more frizz and product adjustment...

Thank you so much for the insight. From why I am reading it seems like I will have to do a lot of experimenting. But I love trying new products :)

Your hair seems similar to mine, and I used to religiously avoid gels. Recently though I've had success with the following: Applying leave in to soaking wet hair and schrunching, then adding gel and schrunching, then putting curl cream on top before diffusing. I find the more wet my hair is when the gel is applied, the more evenly it spreads over the hair. My hair doesn't seem to dry with crunch this way, so I'm now going to experiment with gels I had previously thought I didn't like.
