My homemade solutions list (hair/body/home, share yours!)

I wasn't sure if this belonged on this board, all-natural hair care, or elsewhere, but I decided on this one since this list has to do with all-natural hair care as well! This is a list of all the homemade, all-natural solutions I use in my home. Basically, for everything. The only thing I'm missing is a homemade cold-water laundry detergent (I'm working on it just have to find the right ingredients!) Another thing you may find missing is a hands/body soap for which we buy bars of African black soap. But check it out!

Toothpaste/Mouthwash (for mouthwash I use a much thinner solution)
Baking soda + water + lemon juice

Deodorant
Baking soda (I sprinkle a little onto a damp cloth and apply)

Facewash
Baking soda + water + unpasteurized honey (helps prevent acne)

Toner
Apple cider vinegar + water (also helps prevent acne)

Face masks
Baking soda + water (paste)
Avacado
Honey
Green tea bags (for eyes)

Hair mask
Coconut cream

Shampoo
Baking soda + water

Conditioner
Apple cider vinegar + water

Leave-in
Argan oil

Dishsoap, sink, bath and tile scrub
Baking soda + water + lemon juice

All-purpose cleaner (counters, etc.)
Apple cider vinegar + water

Dog shampoo
Ground oatmeal + water

Dog ear cleaner
Apple cider vinegar + water
Almond oil (for wax build-up)

Dog foot bath/minor cuts & scrapes (human as well as animal, compressed with a cloth)
Epsom salt + water

I have all my homemade solutions in recycled bottles and containers from other products (things I've collected prior to switching, things from family, etc.) As you can see, I'm a big fan of homemade products! Often I find myself throwing together other solutions as well, such as what I put together recently, a simple ground oatmeal and honey soap to help with my father in-laws eczema. If anyone has any questions at all, don't be afraid to ask! Also, share your experience with homemade products/solutions.

This isn't homemade but one solution to kill ants without the nasty smelling sprays is baby powder.

I hear apple cider vinegar also repels ants, and I use that as an everyday cleaner including my tile floors, and we've never had any problems! One thing this reminds me of though, is my arachnophobic mother in-law plants chestnuts around their doorways and in corners as a pet-safe spider repellant. Supposedly it is the oil on the chestnut that spiders don't like. I wouldn't, though, as its only pet-safe if your dog can't swallow them whole (and would, too!) But again I've never had any problems, so...

For everything: water. It's amazing what plain water can do (with a little agitation sometimes)

Face: I usually just rinse with water and rub with a washcloth.

Acne rinse: 1/4 c vinegar & 3/4 water. Splash on and let sit for a bit and let it tingle a bit. This is a very gentle exfoliant, similar to the hydroxy creams you get from the drugstore.

Dry skin: cover the skin with olive oil or another non comedogenic oil. Saturate a washcloth with hot water, as hot as you can stand, and hold the washcloth up to the skin, holding it there until it starts to cool. Wipe all the oil off with the washcloth. The heat opens up the pores and lets the oil do some deep moisturizing.

"shampoo": thorough scalp massage.

Conditioner: oil

Gel: aloe vera gel

3tbsp borax
3tbsp washing soda (not baking soda)
2tbsp liquid castile soap (I use Dr. Bronner's tea tree hemp for the antibacterial properties of the tea tree)

Combine in a 1 gallon container and add 4 cups of very very hot water. Swirl until it's all dissolved. Let cool to room temperature, then add cold water to fill the container the rest of the way.

I love this simple homemade recipe. It's no-low suds so it works great in my high efficiency washing machine and does a good job of getting the clothes really clean! It is much more "liquid-y" than traditional detergent so I use about a cup for a large load, but it's so dang cheap and simple to make that I don't mind mixing up another batch every few weeks.

nice thread i just use natural home made stuff for my body:
hair, oils (argan, evening primrose, macadamia nut, apricot, hemp seed oil) and herbal rinses (sage nettle and marshmallow root, acv)
Face: clay face masks, (kalian clay, rose water, Vit E oil, argan apricot and macadmia nut oil) argan+primrose oil, home made rose water
body: sugar scrub: sugar, coffee, honey, vit e oil and macadamia nut oil

Oh yeah, for the laundry I usually find just borax or just washing soda to be sufficient. When I tried castle soap, though, I had terrible buildup on my clothes which led to mildew, especially on synthetics.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that. I just started using homemade detergent and so far so good but not sure yet of what the long term results will be. Thanks for the heads up!

Good thread! For the laundry detergent. I've been using 1 cup washing soda 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 Dr. Bronner's castile soap bar grated. So far so good.

Nail polish remover instantly paralyzes and kills bugs. All of them. Don't ask how I know. Ummm....diatomaceous earth also does for insects.

IN regard to skin....I find that witch hazel is the best toner, mixed with organic aloe juice, and tea tree essential oil.

For hair....banana baby food, honey, sour cream, yougurt, and coconut oil make an AMAZING moisturizing protein treatment

I found this. Not so sure about the Dawn. To clean, disinfect and repel ants I use white vinegar with tea tree oil. Ants hate both.

Hi! The bi-carb soda with water... Ivefound this to be amazing on my hair... Gets rid of product build up, and seems to make my hair shinier and softer... But how often can I use it? Someone told me its not actually gentle on hair and that I should only do it once a month tops :-(((

Nice! I may have to try that one...Since the weather has improved, I've noticed little ants miling around the door--I think they're looking for food stuffs..

The ACV tip is nice also.
