Run away from devachan!!!!

I decided to write this because I'd seen soooo many curly blogs praising th deva chan hair salons, and I just imagined girl after girl getting their hair ravaged for 600 bucks... I couldnt let them get away with robbing us blind.

The one lone good thing was Sergio's haircut, that my sister got, he really does know how to cut curly hair. Although her color was a mess.

I went on a saturday to get a lavender ombre...my initial appt. was with Cindy, I arrived late since we got lost, and she didnt seem to happy about that but I showed her and explained what I wanted and she got to work. So far so good.....note that I brought my own color ( LAVANDER ) to avoid getting a color a didnt want. So she tells me that getting my black hair to a pastel may damage it too much ( even though I had gotten magenta done before somewhere else with no problem) so I said THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT MY HAIR IS HEALTHY SO GET IT AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN WITHOUT DAMAGING IT ( important part of the story ) Well a while later shes all ready used up all the color I brought and someone new comes to check my color, and then they leave and call like 3-4 more people and they are whispering above my hair until they say "yeah, umm so we are gonna have to bleach and re-dye your hair...." again I ask if that wont damage it too much...they are like no no it'll be fine.*

So now Jason proceeds to start to bleach my hair, but then Sergio (not a supposed “colorist”) sees him doing something and tells him the best way to do is like this and before long Ive had bleach in my hair for well over half an hour and everyone is with another client. After Sofia, Cindy, Jason and Sergio all do bits and pieces with my hair while I hear words like "pastel pink" "blue" "dont you think thats too much?" being thrown around I start preparing for the worst, its now 4:00 Ive been here all day. At 4:30 I finally see my hair... DISASTER! Royal BLUE with gray blue and strips of blonde and pink, and dark purple in the black, the curls are fried, (in spite of me saying over and over "i trust you guys, just dont damage my hair" )*

When I saw it Im not sure if they planned it they were all like WOOW GREAT AWESOME! and I just wanted to get out of there so even though my mom was arguing that the style didnt look right, Sergio was so happy with it and it was so late that i was just like yea yea its great ok, I asked about my curls they said after you wash it they will come back (NOT TRUE). He snips here and there, and says yeahh when you get sick of it just come back and ill cut it....

Anyways after a few weeks but it just gets worst looking. I tried to get my money back (BECAUSE IT WAS EXPENSIVE) and they gave us the run around, then I checked the bill and realized they over charged us by 125 dollars as well.....

So then I proceed to write to the benevolent leaders, Mr.DaSilva and Mrs. Massey. Thinking that a company so invested in curls wouldnt want a girl with a god awful cut and color done by their salon walking around. Mr DaSilva was outright rude, saying that he can offer me a percent of a percent of the money, and if it'll make me feel better he will fire the stylist, Sergio. Needless to say I was stunned, Ive dealt with nicer DMV people than that! And why would he single out Sergio? When all of them worked on my hair? I was disgusted, and then very relieved when Mrs. Massey responded hitting all the right notes. She was sorry, she would come fix my hair herself, and send me product! Yay.......or not....as the weeks dragged by I started to realize not only would I spend the holiday season with my hair a hot mess, but also Mrs. Massey's offers seemed to be as hollow as their claim to know curly hair. Weeks passed ans she made no attempt to contact me, or send products for my hair. Then out of no where I get a heated message from Mrs. Massey saying that she was feeling harassed! Im like WHAT? YOUUUU ARE FEELING harassed!!!!? SERIOUSLY!? Apparently in my attempts to contact her the first time I had posted on two different facebooks which made her feel bad. She rescinded every offer just as quickly as she had made them. I was furious, then I receive a notification from their customer service, that they thought it was my fault for wanting to do color in the first place! Im no hair color rookie and quickly proceeded to breakdown step by step all the mistakes they made, from not using toner, to having to double bleach my hair. That plus a threat for a lawsuit and they finally agreed to return the cash. No apology, no fix for my hair, no nada. Now Im doing my best to try and restore as much of my hair as I can and unfortunately chop the rest.

Do yourself a favor. DO NOT GO TO THE DEVA SALON. ( also at the salon we asked, their products are not natural. )

    Sounds like an ordeal and I'm so sorry to hear you didn't get what you wanted and that your hair suffered damage.

    When I have negative salon experiences, I take advantage of written communication. Sounds like you've already started that ball rolling by telling your story on Facebook and in this thread. You can also go to sites like Yelp and repost this review there. You can even repost this - in case you haven't already - right here under the Salons section (under reviews).

    Thankfully, hair grows back. Also, good on you for persisting until you got your money back.

    Yikes, ditto what Korkscrew said. Your hair was absolutely beautiful before and will be again. From personal experience making drastic changes to hair color is almost always a crapshoot that is entirely dependent upon the expertise (or lack of) of the stylist.
    ALWAYS do a consultation first, especially when your changing colors (black to anything else demands an expert). That color consultation really tells if the colorist knows exactly what they're doing.
    I don't know if you have Mario Tricoci salons but they seperate colorists and hair stylists (you do one or the other not both). When I went from black to caramel blonde with their colorist, we did a consultation before booking the process app. The colorist spent about a 30mins talking w/me and gave recs. on what to do before the process app.

    The end result was natural color and soft undamaged hair.
    Hope you find a salon that does just that for your next process,...just please get the consultation first.

    Yeah, Im def spreading the news, sending it to as many curly hair blogs as I can, simply because thats the reason why I chose that salon!!! My friends and I had taken Massey book as some kind of curly hair bible and I was hearing about how curly conscious the salon was everywhere so I was super hyped! Christina, you are totally right, I found it weird they didnt do a consult but I was sold on the company so the whole time i just assumed they knew even when all the red flags were waving. I feel like had it been a not curly centric salon a probably would have been like HOLD UP! whats going on?! But oh well..and Korkscrew I cant find how you post reviews here, and I didnt even find the salon in the salon section...but you bet I posted it on yelp. It cant be coincidence that both me and my sister had bad color...that just means they dont do color well period, and double bleaching is something not even a straight hair salon would do. Thanks ladies...!

    Amaya, if you go to look at the top of this page you'll see a series of gray tabs, starting with "Hair Types" and ending with "Shop". In the middle of that row you'll see the word "Salons". When you scroll over that button, you'll see a menu that includes "Salon Reviews". Click on that tab.

    Once you're on that page, you'll see the words "Salon Finder" on the left of the page. Enter the name of the salon, plus the address, etc. into the fields provided and click "search". The listing for the salon should pop up and you'll see an option (in small green print) to "add review". Click on that and add your review. ... Now if the salon isn't in the search bank, you can add it yourself by clicking on the tab toward the top (left) of the "Salon Review" page that reads, "Submit your own fabulous salon/stylist recommendations."

    ETA: I thought about this a little more - I mean, your experience - and I still TOTALLY understand the scale of your anger toward the knuckleheads associated with your experience (I'd be spitting nails)! At the same time, you may want to think about targeting only the specific stylist and the specific salon you went to (and of course mention your encounters w/Ms. Massey), rather than encouraging against anyone associated w/the Deva approach. I suggest this because not every Deva salon or Deva stylist is catastrophically horrendous like the salon/stylists you had a problem with at that Deva salon. Reading your story I can't help but feel you "won" some kind of weird anti-lottery that day, where all the wrong people and things happened to you all at once under one roof. But as intensely bad as your experience was, most Deva stylists I've been to don't buy into all of Massey's ideas or her entire approach to hair. Many only borrow the idea of cutting hair dry and do a lot of their own improv after that. And I've NEVER had the kind of treatment you describe. So maybe you could consider taking this into account w/your review/s.

    I echo the other posters and I'm sorry you had such a horrifying experience!! Sounds like customer service just added insult to injury.

    I know this doesn't help at all, but I feel like I could've done what you wanted. I'm not a professional colorist in any way I just play around with color and have done blue highlights.

    I thought you wanted a whole head of pastel purple and the big ordeal made sense until I saw the pics.

    This is why I'm so afraid of letting stylists touch my color.

    I'm sorry this happened to you :( I feel like curly salons really specialize in cuts, because most color reviews I've heard are not very positive. It's like they do all this cut and style training, but many don't even seem to have amateur color knowledge. The responses from Mr. DaSilva and Ms. Massey are unacceptable.

    Thanks for this review. I think I actually read it on yelp but seeing the pictures makes it so much worse. You poor thing. The responses from Massey and DaSilva are probably the most irritating part. I happen to live not so far from the salon you went to and was wondering about it but I'll be avoiding it now. I'd rather go seek out a devatrained stylist from elsewhere who puts their own spin on things and who is kinder to their clients.

    I am sorry you had this awful experience, and I am one also to say that there is nothing miraculous about the Deva products, or, for that matter, those who claim Deva training. Having said this, however, "What I wanted" has hair very different from yours, and her curls were also likely formed with a large barreled curling iron. Nevertheless, the color you got was not what you wanted, I get that. I think it would have taken a very expert colorist to get what you wanted; and some stylists are better at color than others. I think its often a mistake for us to look at a pic - professionally done hair, and possibly also photo shopped - and think we can have the same hair.

    Yes, but wasn't it just the coloring? She wasn't trying to alter her curl pattern. I mean I go to a colorist with pictures of whoever but I'm not thinking so much about their hair's texture but the color. But you're right. No matter what's in the picture, you always get a variation on a theme. My hair takes blond really well for some reason (no brass at all) but it's difficult for me to achieve red. And I love me some red. I was very stubborn and dyed my hair red nonstop for almost 2 years. It took lots of abuse, my poor hair, because of all of the touchups and recoloring. I wish I'd been cool enough to try blue, purple, pink, etc when I was a little younger. But now that might put a hindrance on my professional life. Also after watching what happened to amaya I'm thinking I'll stick to the more basic colors of the rainbow.

    It may have just been the coloring, but everyone's curl pattern, texture, etc will impact how color turns out. The "What I wanted" gal has a very professional color, not for the faint hearted to attempt; her hair has been professionally curled and blown out. I am not disagreeing that she got a bad deal. What I am saying is that she probably could not have gotten what she wanted any how -because of her curl pattern, cut and style - and the colorist/stylist was too stupid or proud to see that she wanted her hair "tipped" with color - not dyed blue halfway down her back.

    If a stylist thinks the color request seems overly-complicated or not appropriate to the hair type the client has, it's up to that stylist (not the OP) to not do the hair color. ... Or that stylist can foolishly do a crappy color to turn a profit, resulting in an angry client w/a computer and a mission, warning potential customers away from her.

    Not worth it for the stylist.

    If I were still professionally coloring my hair and wanted an involved color alteration, I'd research stylists who have excellent reputations for pulling off great, sophisticated color. I would want color to be their thing. Whether or not they could give me the cut of my life would be secondary, or maybe even irrelevant. I could get my hair cut before or after the color by someone else.

    A good colorist could have done that. The OP was looking to match the color, not the curl pattern.

    To the OP, I do think you got a bad deal. I'm also a person who usually has met incompetent Deva trained stylists so I never look for Deva trained. However, not all of the stylists are incompetent - just the colorists.

    Also, not being mean, but any time you bleach your hair, especially when you have black or almost black hair, there will be some damage or dryness. The hair won't be quite the same as before. That is something to research before getting color done. I'd also second the posters who said to look for someone who does consultations and seems capable.

    I agree with Korkscrew and Multicurly. But, there are a lot of stylists who will do heaven knows what to have the business. I encountered this myself when I went in search of a new stylist. Even one that was recommended here, on the site, wanted to to a huge treatment for my hair because I had been using a plethora of products on my hair ( duh, what curlies dont?) which would have jacked the bill to over $100..

    I agree. I hope you didn't think that I sounded combative. I just wanted to understand what you meant about the curl pattern. I do now. And the reason I think so ill of devachan in this instance is that it does market itself as an upscale and professional salon. If they couldn't do the job, they shouldn't have forged ahead no matter how badly the client wanted it or how much she trusted them. And yes everytime you dye your hair there is damage. But these guys really took the cake. . . I've been to lower scale salons for color and higher class ones. I've paid anywhere from $50-$200 per job for a variety of colors (chestnut, auburn, red, blond, highlights, lowlights, tipped-although not lavender-ends, etc.) and in my experience sometimes it's great at cheaper salons, sometimes it's not so great. Same for the upper scale ones. Sometimes Korean ladies can dye my thick, curly bushy hair just as well as any specialist for curly hair. It's all a matter of finding the right person who knows what they're doing and who won't overprocess you.

    You didnt sound combative. You were expressing your opinions. I have had bad experiences in a Deva salon - which I posted about here - and the gal who colors my hair now charges $30 for a root touch. She does a fine job. I agree that professionals should not agree to do something they cannot manage. The "want this" pic has purple ends, or blue purple; and Amaya wound up with bleached blue. I would have blown a gasket!

    Yeah, same here. But then I'm prone to gasket blowing. :happy6: I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Deva too! Yikes two strikes. Tomorrow I'm going to get some more layers put in with my a stylist (cut wet) because at least I know what I'm getting into. Although hanging around this site has made me want to chop my hair into a bob or something more edgy. We'll see. I do change my mind a lot. Sometimes you've got to go with your gut.

    To the OP thanks for showing your experience with us deva chan will def be a no go for me... I read the few reviews in yelp as well and it was pretty much a hit or miss with them mostly a miss... Now with your hair color IMO,

    First, I'm sorry about ur hair. But I also think its up to us to educate ourselves about bleaching. To bleach is to permanently change hair, much like permanently changing relaxing. Bleach strips the oils naturally found n hair, while relaxing the natural curl. Again, sorry about ur hair!

    True and VERY true - too many stylists don't mind risking their reputations to turn some cash, though hopefully online reviews have made a few think twice. That's why I think it's also up to us as consumers to do our due diligence and research what we need and who can best deliver it at a price we find reasonable ;)

    Hmm. Maybe I'm missing something. Are you talking about the Devachan salons in NYC? Looks to me like each of those salons have an average of 4 and 4.5 out of 5 stars (from a sizable number of reviewers) :?:

    I've been to two devachan trained stylist in my home town and I'll never trust another one to do my hair.

    The first one I wanted to cut out the heat damaged hair, I knew this would mean chopping off about 3-5 inches, I was fine with that. My soul was ready for it. But she only lopped off a piece here or there, charged me $25 and then sent me on my way. I could not even tell a difference. So I went back to my original stylist (who doesn't really like doing natural/curly hair) and had her blow dry my hair and then cut it (the point of me going to a deva trained stylist was so I could avoid the direct heat).

    Then I decided that I wanted a devachan stylist to cut a few layers in the top/front portion of my hair. I told her multiple times to leave the back alone because I liked the length of my hair. She agreed. Cut to me leaving the salon, washing my hair (because I didn't like the way she styled my hair) and seeing that the back of my hair was about 1-2 inches shorter. I don't know how I missed what she was doing, I watched her like a hawk. I was pissed. She also did some weird thing where she cut the middle/crown of my hair pretty short, and still can't figure out why she did that. It made no sense to me. At least I was able to get my money back, although the owner seemed to think it was my fault. Even though I told that woman what I wanted, she agreed, but ignored what I said.

    From now on, I'll just cut my own hair. Forget that. YouTube has many tutorials on how to cut your hair or trim your ends.

    Yes the one in Culver City received numerous bad reviews sometimes when businesses expand things just arent the same

    Im glad I was able to warn some people...I think what really offends me is not so much the botched hair job ( even though double bleaching is such an amateur mistake for such an expensive salon to make!!) because Ive had bad hair jobs here and there...what really surprised me was the company's ethics, I mean in my job if a customer comes to me soo unhappy with something thats clearly my fault, I own up and try to make things better. Its common sense, I really have never met such a disgustingly unethical approach to business as Devachans...its horrifying to think that they not only wanted to pin the whole thing on me, (even though I again WANTED AND BROUGHT LAVENDER OR PURPLE and they clearly went and used BLUE) but when I was upset by the results they didnt want to give the money back and said "come back" and we will fix it... Now, I knew it but I went to a salon in beverly hills just to confirm, really ritzy place, the chick took one look at my hair and said "whoever tells you they can fix this is lying, if I put color in it itll wash right out and further damage your hair, I cant bleach it anymore, and I cant cover it, treat and cut your own hair when its longer and healthier come and Ill cover your color..." So what was deva's plan? to saw my hair off? Dye it to death? Just sad....I honestly wonder about that company, its their responsibility to ensure their staff has enough training to work there!!!! Anyways just chopped about 2-3inches off my hair to see if I can restore it a bit...will keep you all updated.

    PS It was def just the color i was going for, not the big quinceañera curls in the pic. if you notice the tips are the only part dyed all the way to lavender, the rest is just light brown. I did my hair magenta before, so I know it can take color and bleach to a certain extent...they just thoroughly messed up.

    Yes bleaching your hair twice in one sitting is such an amateur move to make... Maybe the color u want is a progressive color? Meaning you had to work your way up to that color after all you were going from black/brown to lavendar but they should have definitely known that... Did they at least deep condition it... Is it fried?

    You're totally right, Amaya. Their company ethics and shocking lack of customer service puts a real sour taste in my mouth. Honestly, how foolish are they? I say just chop the blue mess. Your hair is so long as it is and it'll grow back. Maybe you should put in a plastic bag and seal it as evidence of the crime. Haha. Just kidding. I'm sure you've taken plenty of pictures. You should spread the word. It's like a public service. Although I agree with korkscrew there most definitely are people out there who are deva trained and not affiliated with the company who can do a good job and would not put the blame on you in the event of their messing up. But this review is for the salon in Culver City in particular. Perhaps you should go back in your initial post, edit and specify that if you can. Although I, personally, am a little disgusted by the way they treated you and would not want to visit a deva salon in general now. California or New York.

    Yeah I see those who were unsatisfied have extreme stories: hair that supposedly went from shoulder length to pixie; lopsided, choppy and uneven cuts. Or that one color debacle this thread is based on.

    I'm no shill for Devachan lol - I don't think they're for everyone and they have a few crappy stylists among them, like any other group of hair practitioners. But it's only fair to look at the math: there are 25 reviews listed for the Culver city salon and overall they have 4 stars. There are 4 people who gave them a bad rating, including one person who posted an unneeded response under her own review apparently so she could slip in an extra 1 star rating. There are 21 posters who gave them a fair, good or great rating. ... Those 4 extreme ratings still might reduce their patronage. I'd guess they have a PR problem brewing, especially if the percentage of negative reviews begins to increase.

    No one would accuse you of being a shill for anything, Korkscrew. You're obviously an honest person and you stick to your guns. I agree that it is only fair to look at the math, and I'm sure there are several fabulous hairdressers at Devachan (Culver City) who are responsible for those 21 favorable reviews and who should be commended for it. Those 21 good reviews were part of what was making me consider going to this salon in the first place. (It's also worth noting that one reviewer on yelp liked the cut but hated the color, which demonstrates that this coloring business is an ongoing problem.)

    But it's also easy to understand how some of these horror stories can make those other favorable reviews fade to the background. The fact of the matter is it's your hair. If somebody botches it it's not so easy to fix. And if instead of apologizing they knock you down after the fact, well, it doesn't speak well for the company in general, does it? Based on the reviews to my knowledge I think Amaya is the only one who, quite rightly, had the mind to go back and try to be recompensed. And not only did they overcharge her, they tried to pin the blame on her! So as far as I'm concerned it's a wash. A big blotchy purplish blue wash.

    Well said Dusa (and thanks for that vote of confidence :D ). You've helped me to see another angle to this: those scorching reviews are probably overshadowing at least a dozen of those positive reviews, despite the actual math.

    And to your (rhetorical and very good) question about this salon not addressing the negative feedback: Did you notice that the OPs botched color pics are displayed at the top of the Culver salon's Yelp page, as part of their picture slide show? LOL ... That alone is a serious PR problem. And then no one from the salon bothered to type up responses to any of those negative Yelp reviews. Someone has fallen asleep at the helm.
