I give up

I thought I had it down, and then POOF...literally. I can't get ANYTHING to work in my hair. It looks so thin & stringy, crunchy even. I just HATE my hair again.

I have no idea what is going on. I thought it was the hot weather, but it's like this even on the days where it is 70ish.

I was protein thirsty, now it just seems starved for moisture. WTH??? Has anyone else found a HG? I have been trying everything, spending a fortune, and it's horrible again. The most recent thing I have tried is the eco styler krystal. It worked for a DAY and now it looks like pure ass. I am still using my FSG, ass. I got a mousse, it leaves it limp and dry in about three hours. I don't have any idea what to do now. I think I will shave it or go back to straightening it. I am just pure sick of looking like a wet down frizz ball.

I hear you. I didn't realize that my hair had started thinning until I found this site and learned how to treat it better. I got nice clumps and curl definition, but lost volume and suddenly there was my scalp showing through everywhere.

So I abandoned all those great techniques. I tried combing my hair at the end of my shower to actually break up the clumps. Then I would scrunch in a little bit of a curl enhancer. Next I would put it in a pseudo-turban/plop for about 5 minutes. Lastly, I put in a gel.

For the first week, that worked great. I didn't have great curl definition, but I had much better volume and no more stringy curls. And then it stopped working. I've been a frizz ball for two weeks. Even with SS CEJ/FHG which hadn't given me frizz before.

I still think the combing and gently applying the curl enhancer are the right trick; I just have to figure out how to get it work again.

Or maybe it is my protein/moisture balance that's off. I have no clue. I don't know how to tell if my hair needs moisture or protein. I'm just waiting until my hair is long enough to put it up when it's a bad hair day.

If you don't want to spend a fortune, and haven't tried them already, I'd recommend getting samples from KathyM. I've tried about a dozen different things, and like the SS stuff best.

    Good luck!

I am also having issues with this. I really want to figure it out, but it is hard to tell. So, right now, I am just experimenting and hoping.

As my hair gets more conditioned and less frizzy, I am realizing more and more just how thin it is, and I'm having issues with that. I always wanted my hair thinner, now I want more thickness! Go figure.

you and I both. I know and feel what you are going thru. I have spent a lot on my hair but now, I order thru Sephora. I find products that will work for curly hair. At least, I know with Sephora I can return stuff and no questions asked. The worst is having to spend money on something and have to keep it regardless. Hopefully, something will work.
I recently bought ouidad starter kit and the intense deep treatment. I don't think my hair likes a lot of protein. It gets really stringy so I THINK it needs moisture. Its all a trial and error but I know with sephora I will get my money back.
    Good luck and god bless.
3b/C with nicer curls on the bottom!
Hair: naturally very dry and VERY porous
    hair seems to be moody.
Does not seem to like oils
Does not like protein or too much?
    Does not like rich products

So, I ask myself. What does it like? That is the question, and I'm on a mission.

So, stringy means more moisture is needed?

I don't think stringy would mean moisture is needed. There are a number of possibilities, but that isn't one of them that occurs to me.

Some stringiness might be due to lack of clumping. Not having gotten silicone buildup off when you started CGing is another. Over conditioning, or not having fulling rinsed your (rinse out) conditioner off is yet another.

A few things come to mind because I am just starting out and everything is a trial.

Add moisture? You can try it and see what happens.
Just look at this like an experiment and have patience. You're solving problems. It is manageable.

If you need moisture and have a DT, try it. If it helps at all, moisture was the right thing. a few drops of oil in your conditioner might help to seal the moisture in. If I want to get overconditioned, I just have to add aloe juice and honey to my rinse-out. That might be very good for you.

If it doesn't help, then maybe buildup is a problem. If you need to clarify with shampoo or baking soda in conditioner (there's a recipe around here somewhere) that might help. If you see an improvement with this step, then buildup was a problem.

I used mousse once and had to wash several times to get rid of the slimy, greasy-feeling residue because it would not rinse away.

Ecostyler krystal has both protein and glycerin. One or the other or both of those might be a problem for you.

Here are a couple links about protein and moisture balance:

I also had that problem at one time. I would recommend getting samples from kathymack too. What worked for me was the Spiral Solutions. I use the Caitlin's condish everyday and also use the Nourishing scalp oil at night(I don't even need to wash it out). My styler is the CEJ and the emollience. Good luck!
