Totally Home Made Regime For Fine, Porous Hair, Can it be done?

giegie Posts: 62Registered Users Curl Novice
Yes, if anywhere it can be done here, with your help-

I want to begin by sharing my gratitude for this site.
It is safe to say everything that I have learned about caring for my hair in its natural state, I have learned from you all.

Now I want to refine what I know, keeping it CG and natural.

Eventually I would like to have everything that touches my hair be something that I can mix up myself.

Furthermore I am hoping that fine, porous haired contributors to this forum can share with me their potions to round out my CG, homemade regime:

Right now the beginning part of my regime is where I like it--
Weekly DT: 2 oz. molasses + 1 oz. coconut milk (protein laden)
Weekly Henna: 2 oz. henna + 3 oz. ACV (tannin/ acidic)

It's that later part of my regime that I would like to get your aide in gathering home made recipes for keeping in mind that my fine, porous hair needs protein / tannin to thicken its finer tendancies and acidic rinses to get the porous cuticles to smooth down so that it keeps the protein/ tannin and moisture that manages to penetrate it:

Once a week Hair Rinse: nothing set (would like home made potions)
Weekly Leave-in: KCKT (would like home made potion alternative)
Weekly Styler: KCCC (would like home made potion alternative)
Week night moisture before twisting: Afro Detangler (would like home made potion alternative)
Week morning curl refresher: KC Spiral Spritz (would like home made potion alternative)
Week morning ends sealer : KC Gloss Pomade (would like home made potion alternative)

Please share your potions, thank you in advance.

I will be watching for answers to this thread with great interest.
I can suggest FSG. I recommend BoticelliBabe's recipe.
There is a youtube video on making [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink].
    HTH.
    CurlyFireHorse
Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 2: KCKT, KCCC, plop, KCCC, plop again, air dry
Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny

    Yeah, it's beginning.

    Thank you CurlyFireHorse for suggesting:

Weekly Styler: KCCC home made potion alternative:

Gypsycurls' Jojoba Gel video, I think I will substitute this recipe's xanthum gum for pectin though as suggested here (see post #13) to avoid flakes, and substitute agave for glycerin to further complement the thickening quality of the pectin.

Of all the oils jojoba is probably best at not weighing down this fine hair o' mine because it asborbs so readily.
The pectin will be a good acidic cuticle closer, in combination with the acidic quality of the aloe vera.
This acidic styler is well placed in the regime as it will encourage the porous cuticle to close keeping in the moisture from the soon to come all natural, home made leave-in conditioner potion.

Thank you CurlyFireHorse for also suggesting:

Daily morning curl refresher: KC Spiral Spritz alternative:

BB's flax seed gelee (FSG) recipe (see post #1), (by the by I just found a link to BB's etsy page must give her 'props' (proper respect). From BB's CN post I see that she refers to a youtube video. Her reference to linseed makes me think it was msbrice a.k.a hairoine's video.
Curlykey suggests mixing 1:1 FSG, jojoba gel in post #7 here to make an effective daily styler.

The protein content of the flaxseed or linseed (1/4 C equivalent to an egg, who knew) will be good for coating and protecting these fine hairs o' mine.
The acidic quality of aloe vera has already been mentioned.
The optional EOs for the FSG recipe could be chosen for the specific benefit needed.

I am excited to see what else is suggested!

My local Food COOP and my local East Indian grocer could definitely keep me in stock with the items for my hair pantry (reducing my carbon foot print and packaging use, good for Gaia and for me) so far:
    • molasses
    • coconut milk
    • henna
    • ACV
    • jojoba oil
    • fruit pectin
    • agave nectar
    • aloe juice
    • flax seeds
Fine, Porous Haired Mixtresses, I am still on the quest for the following potions:

Once a week Hair Rinse: nothing set (would like home made potions)

Wash Day Leave-in: KCKT (would like home made
    potion alternative)

Week night moisture before twisting: Afro Detangler (would like home made potion alternative)

Daily morning ends sealer : KC Gloss Pomade (would like home made potion alternative)

And once again thank you all, you have already taught me so much.

Rainshower's Post in the 4a Forum of Anita Grant's Marshmallow Willow Hair Rinse seems a good candidate for an all natural, locally sourcable KC Knot Today alternative.

Marshmallow makes the cut because it has some protein in it.

Willow bark has been seen to stimuate cell, and I would extrapolate hair growth.

Rainshower added oil to the rinse with good results for her but I think I will stay to the original Anita Grant receipt as oil might not be good for this fine hair o' mine.

Followed with a cold water rinse to close the porous cuticle seems like a good bet

Still looking for alternative My hair pantry so far:
    • molasses
    • coconut milk
    • henna
    • ACV
    • jojoba oil
    • fruit pectin
    • agave nectar
    • aloe juice
    • flax seeds
    • marshmallow root
    • willow bark
Still on the prowl. Signing off for now.

Jojoba jelly had it's "day." Most of the commercial jellies are MUCH better. When I first joined, I was mixing in the kitchen all of the time. It got to be expensive to throw out all that "stuff." At this point, I make FSG. It's the only product I've made that I still love.

I haven't stocked my hair pantry quite yet, but I've been really interested in grapeseed oil. I've used it on my skin before- it's very light and highly absorbent, so I was toying with the idea of making a homemade condish for co washing with it. Maybe grapeseed oil, honey, and a tiny bit of Dr. Bronner's liquid castile as a mild surfectant.
2a in the front/sides, 2b in the back.
Highly porous, dry, fine, low elasticity
Currently experimenting- I'm on a mission to eventually use all homemade products for my hair!
    CG since July '10.
co-wash with White Rain Energizing Citrus
Using coconut oil on ends nightly
    styling with aloe vera gel
DT once a week with mayo, egg, olive oil.
Focusing on scalp and hair health first, then length.
