I Am Enraged With Devacare!!!!!

dee-naturedee-nature Posts: 630Registered Users
:angryfire: I am pissed at the outcome of the DevaCare line and i say line b/c i practically purchased everything from the no-poo to the curlagel, not to mention it was PRICEY. I mistakenly used this products no-poo & condition one first thing after taking out my braids. My hair was unrecognizable, it was as though some1 stole my texture and pass their dry, brittle, tangled hair to me. I didnt think to blame it on the product since i heard so many great things about it,(its supose to be damb near perfect) so i blamed the fact that my hair was growing out on the matter. Next day i use completely diffrent products and meraculouslly my texture is back to soft, i thought it was coincidence so i decided to give devacare one last chance...HUGE mistake!! it left my hair worse than it was b4k very tangled and supper dry and to add insult to injury, my scalp is dry, flacky and itchy!!! now i am under a dryer, upset, doing a DC in hopes that i can get this stuff out of my hair! I am soo disapointed at the outcome because i had high hopes for this product and it left me writting this thread. If you are a sista with kinky hair do not make the same mistake i made. you dont get what you pay for when it comes to hair products because my v05 conditioner cost me just $1 and gets the job done. I wish there was a post like this from sistas with 4 hair types warning me b4 spending $56 on some products i wasnt going to use.
please post products you've had a bad experience for. thanks for sharing

I'm curious to know what made you buy this stuff. I've been on the natural hair boards since late 2007 and I've never seen many rave reviews on it. I tend to try stuff that the masses recommend, not the few.

personally...bought it before I was on the hair boards along with a bunch of Miss Jessie's stuff. suffice it to say, it was an expensive lesson :)

I'm so sorry to hear you had a bad experience with DevaCare. I guess I am one of the few that actually likes the NoPoo and One Conditioner. I first tried it at a salon so luckily I saw what the outcome was before I spent a whole bunch of money on the products, and actually that was why I bought it.

I wont say it's one of my staples since African black soap work just as fine as NoPoo for me and is a fraction of the price, but I do alternate my washes between poo bars and NoPoo since co-washing doesnt work for me.

I guess now I know why I dont see many reviews on the product. I tried the Mist-er Right and the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-BLeave-In-p-434.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-bleavein]B'Leave-in[/buylink] conditioner after success with the NoPoo and it was a big FAIL.

I agree though. Put it on the swap board. Someone will take it.

I would try to wash with a clarifying shampoo. Maybe the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Come-Clean-Moisturizing-Shampoo-p-844.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Kinky-Curly-Come-Clean-Moisturizing-Shampoo]Kinky Curly Come Clean[/buylink] since it is sulfate free and wont strip your hair, or something like it. A good drug store brand would be cream of nature's moisturizing shampoo. Then I would do a good moisturizing deep conditioner. Maybe you will have to do this 2 or 3 times over the next week or so to rebalance your hair, but that should help. In the meantime, try to keep it moisturized and protected (braids/twists).

I never personally used Devacare. Sorry you had a bad experience. Sounds like you got some great advice about getting your hair back to normal.

Before you buy, just post a thread and check the product reviews sections of the site. Also check if the company has sample sizes.

I don't really like the deva care line either. Thankfully it wasn't a disaster, but I spent a lot of money too and got pretty much zip. I agree with sobecurl, clarifying should get it out. If you don't have access to the Come Clean, I've heard people say that the VO5 clarifier is good. You can pick it up just about any where for a dollar or two.

You could try doing a white vinegar or apple cider vinegar rinse, too. I use about 2 ounce of vinegar and about 14 ounces of warm water.

    1) Shampoo your hair with a gentle shampoo, rinse thorougly.
2)Pour the diluted vinegar over your head (keep your eyes and mouth closed, or it will be a very unpleasant experience). Gently massage your hair and scalp for a few miutes. Rinse throughly.
    3) Apply a moisturizing conditioner. Leave on for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Style as usual.

This is what has worked for me in the past to get rid of product build-up.

    Good luck!

mo_gemini, thank you for the advice, i did look into this product and based on the reviews and youtube its the next best thing but man was i wrong. i shld have had better better judgment on the fact that not a lot of 4as commented or have even used it. I will never make that same mistake again. i have contacted devacare and i am currently waiting on a response. I have tried everything from acv, to baking soda rinse to avocado DT and essential oil treatments and so far my hair just laughing at me. NOTHING WORKS!! fortunately other people on here has experienced the same reaction to products and gave me news that the hair will go back to its old state in time. I guess i just wanna see change rite away and that my issue. i will continue DTs and DCs will follow up with the outcome in about a week. Thanks 4 all the suggestions and advice

    Ladies,
    I just want to inform you all that my hair has restored itself!!!! I took every1s advices kept on DTs, DC follow up with acv and PS to seal moister until my hair couldnt fight it anymore. I am soo thankful for my NC family for holding my hands through this mess. If it wasnt for you, i would have BCd again cus the way my hair was looking, feeing, and not responding 2 anything, i thought there was no turning back. Its bitter/sweet because now i know what striping and coated hair feel like, i also know my hair hates protein and whatever else is in that devacare line. I have learned some valuable lessions these past few days;
    1. about products, if you arent absolutely sure whats in it, dont used it!!
    2. If you have found a product your hair likes, stop searching for more
    3. you dont get what you pay for when it comes to hair products.

As of last week i am no longer a PJ, i figured i have all the products i need and with the new treatments yall schooled me on, I am set for life. The truth is all your hair really needs is a good conditoner, a clarifier, leave-in (curl pudding, etcs) and great essential oils 4 DCs, i have all of this so i will pass the PJ patton to the newbies:salut:.

I was able to contact pattie at Devacare, she asked that i emailed her my story and we could proceed from there, that was 3/4 and i still havent heard from her. I really am not to worried about it b/c i did my share of Devacare name bashing on here and on fotki:protest:, besides i am getting good offers for the products on the swap board. Bottom line I couldnt have done it with out all of you, i am forever grateful:notworthy: THANKS AMILLION!!!

the reality of it is everything doesnt work for everyone. if u ever have a hankering to try somehing new, it may be best to buy small quantities to save urself more heartache & money. a few months ago I bought one of the gels ( i think set up.. something like that). literally after one fingertip full i knew i wasnt for me. took that ish back to ulta & got a refund. my hair didnt respond, not to mention the prices for that line are ri-damn-diculous

have you ever thought of making your own hair care products?

You can use the ingrediants that you know make you hair feel good and keep it healthy. It will also help you to understand which products will work better on your hair.

yeah, i don't think their chemists had 4b hair in mind when formulating that line. based on the reviews, it works best for 3b-2 hair.

i absolutely agree, Kinky Rhonnie,MixedUpCurlyChick, and nana_banana abt devacare tending to 3c and up, my nieces hair is 3c and it loves tht product.

and dimples i start my natural hair journey making my own products then got lazy after a while so i got into PJ addiction, i think imma go back to making my own.

i read reviews on youtube and on here not on curl talk, at that time i hadn't figured how to use curl talk. but in curl marts reviews. but my biggest influence to use this was mikosbelle , she has a fotki acc and i stopped on her pg she is 4A hair type AND HER REVIEWS ON DEVA-CARE were super convincing so i thought id give it a try...huge mistake!

    devacare contacted me and this is what they said;

    Dee,

It sounds as if you had an expectation that was not met, but yet you are still eager to find a solution. I believe that is why you are writing. If so, here are some of my observations:

What I've found with the group of few who felt dissatisfied were the following:

    1. weren't using enough product
    2. were using the wrong product for their curl type and hydration level
    3. didnt give the product 30 days
    4. were using other products with the Deva. products

It sounds like your priority is hydration, not curl definition. You need to seriously recover lost moisture before a daily routine can really work for you. If I am right, I am guessing you have botticelli or corkscrew curls. If I am wrong, then I am convinced you are not using enough product and that yiu are not working it through the hair and leaving it on long enough to let the botanicals penetrate. I suggest skipping the No-Poo for now, and use One Condition instead both as a cleanser and conditioner, working it through your ends in a downward gliding motion. Then, uese Heaven In Hair, moisture masque, for 30 minutes as a treatment with or without heat under a plastic cap. Finish by adding back some One Condition and one drop of Mirrorurls shine serum in the palms of your hands and gliding, (not scrunching) the product through your ends.

Not every product or line will work for you. I don't think there is anything wrong with Devacare; it just doesn't work for you. The only 4s that I've seen rave about this line are those with very fine 4a hair. I am not a 4, but I have coarse hair, and my hair hates the Deva line. The shampoo made my hair dry and tangled, which is odd, since my hair rarely tangles.

I'm sorry that you had to learn this the hard way, but this whole CG or natural thing, is about trial and error. Glad to know that your hair has returned to normal.

thank you. I agree that not all products will work for every1, but I too have fine 4a hair and it didn't work 4 my hair. Nevertheless I'm glad the nitemare is over, I wld have loved 2 have a good relationship with this product since it did a great job at defining my curls but that's not enough.

I purchased the devacurl no poo and devacare OneC since the OneC from devacurl isnt available in my country (weird that they only sell half the line! But no big deal since i always mix up stuff from other brands and never had issues) ... Anyway, the no poo works great and i love it! But the OneC is the WORST conditioner i ever tried!! First I thought that i wasnt applying enough and just kept putting more and more into my hair until i realised that the condish simply sucks...it has zero slip and it left my hair with more tangles than it had before!!!

Horrible stuff! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I never got my money back. There should be warning labels on this kind of products

It definitely should! If it has been a cheapo condish i really wouldn't mind...but to play trial and ERROR with something that pricey just isn't fun :(

I have only tried DevaCurl. I bought the travel pack. The no poo was nothing special, hated the gel but then my hair all gels except flaxseed gel and activator gel. The spritz was fine but I prefer my homemade spritz so I gave it away.

The only thing my hair absolutely loved was the devacurl one conditioner. I did repurchase in a full size. I could tell the difference between it and my cheapies. But the way I go through condtioner with this dense hair I couldn't justify the price so I moved on. Also I learned how to give my cheapies a boost by adding some ingredients.
Yes, it's real. No, you can't touch it. :wav:

yes! Rite now i am loving my albertos vo5 moisture milk i just add castor oil for thickness and its perfect ; smells great, and has lots of slip (my fav benefit ). For $1 i get all that AND at least 4 uses thats to me is a SEAL that cannot be beat :-D.

@curlyB_ i second that but i made it known all over how disappointed i was with my overall experience. ;-)
