Anyone achieving both curly bangs and crown height/volume? HOW??

MirCurlsMirCurls Posts: 2,660Registered Users
Okay, I look crappy with hair that's too flat/coiled/close to head. I've always preferred volume and crown height.

With curls, I find my face if often too bare and open and I need hair on my face, really. I've got a fat face. :D

If you have curly bangs (not blown out) and have achieved crown height and volume without frizz, how'd you do it. I'm even ready to go modified CG if it means I can get crown height and volume. Some days, I'll finger comb out my hair risking frizz, just to get a bushier, bulkier, more voluminous look. Today, I played a bit, pushing hair forward and around. I'm not sure, and I'll have to discuss with longterm hair stylist, but maybe I should risk shorter hair around face and shorter "bangs".

I've ordered stronger gels and even a hairspray, and am willing to clarify more often to get that height and volume. I just hate that when the curls are shiny and tightly coiled, I have that "too close to the head" look that I hate.

I uploaded fotki pics from Sunday 2/28 where I'm VERY moisturized and very gelled/CIABed to withstand exercise and wind and very low humidity/low dewpoint. (I tend to dry out like mad from ends up, so I think I overmoisturized, too.)
Thumbnails below to show how I prefer some volume: First pic was ACCIDENT, wind blowing my hair in my face giving me bangs. Hah. The others are pictures from previous months where I had more volume. I think those suit me to the flat top looks that you'll find on Fotki--bare forehead, hair droopy. The other two show a more "bare, flat" look that I like less.

Any tips welcome, and if you have pics that I can take to my stylist as examples, please post. I don't want BLOWN OUT bangs (which I'll do only if I'm going to blow out the whole upper hair area and let ends curl). I'm looking for actual curly bangs and crown lift. THANKS.

Do you diffuse you air or let it air dry? When I diffuse it, I turn upside down and it gives it a lot of body. Try doing that to the crown of you head.
:blob7::blob7: I am a newbie, so I am just getting started on here. I just did a pure virgin coconut oil treatment on my hair, and it looks great!!

:dontknow: The main problem I am having on here is trying to determine my hair type. Looks like 3a, but it can be just wavy at times too being as it is getting longer.

Don't understand some of the short terms on here. Figure out what CG meant though! LOL!

;) Looking forward to making some new curly girl friends on here!

Yeah, I do. I do almost all my hair stuff upside down, in and out of the shower. I get root curl that way. I also almost always put some hard hold gel--BRHG or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCare-Arc-AnGell-p-567.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devacare-arc-angell]Deva Arc Angell[/buylink]--in, especially crown. I also use a trident comb to lift and diffuse the crown, which some days gives me decent lift, if not a whole lot, some.

I may have to experiment with clips and a hair spray (ordered a CG friendly one) after hair is dry to see if that can help.

I'm hoping some more tips come my way--cut, style, methods, products.

I am willing to compromise my curl's integrity and clumping to get a fuller look. I know, can't have it all, I think.

Of course, the haircut is the foundation to everything else. Your curls look similar to mine in type. Our properties are very different--my hair is fine, low porosity and not at all dry.

For me, starting to use the natural soap bars to cleanse (after six months of cowashing) made a HUGE difference. Tightened my curl and added volume. (You can see some of the difference in my early fotki pictures.) Using the bars was "the rage" about 18 months ago, but has become very controversial.

I wet and style every day. My hair isn't really long enough to plop. I do it for a few minutes while I put on eye makeup and set up hard bonnet dryer. I scrunch out water with Curls Like Us Clothe--don't know if that helps. Only use one clip to clip my side swept bangs up and out of my face. Sit under dryer for 7-15 minutes and air dry.

There are soap bars and shampoo bars. I use the soap bars. The difference is that the soap bars are supposed to be "super fatted." People like Curl Chemist are anti soap bars--it's in one of her articles. I've been using them for 18 months, as have a lot of others on here, with no problems except for the Chagrin Valley bars. I got a few samples, used one and my hair was dry and disgusting. I gave the samples away. My hair hates castor oil, so that may have been the problem. I'd used other bars in the past, so I'm just careful about my ingredients.

Are those the samples you sent me when I ordered from you!?!? I haven't used them on my hair, but will give them a try as long as it's not the drying ones.

Yes, I don't buy the Chagrin Valley ones. Here's how I use them:

I lather in my hands and wash hair and scalp, rinse. Use rinse out conditioner, rinse. Spray on ACV rinse which I keep mixed in a spray bottle in shower (you need to restore pH--hair is acid, soap is alkaline) and rinse. Style as usual. It takes hair a few washes to acclimate to soap, but it should feel fine after rinse out conditioner.

    kathymack,

do you have any pictures of your bangs?? I've looked through your fotki and have also searched for curly bang pictures, but haven't had much luck. I'm getting my hair cut on saturday with Tiffany(struttswife) and I'm toying with the idea of curly bangs. Need to cover up this huge forehead of mine :laughing8:

You can actually see my "bangs" in my signature picture. That's all they are--just a little shorter then the rest of my hair, cut on an angle. I wear a side part and don't have a large forehead.

When I need more crown volume and height, and diffusing hasn't done enough for me, I use this Dust It powder.

    116SUwpo0iL._SL500_AA160_.jpg

I first discovered it a couple of years ago from my stylist when I was doing straight hair. But it totally works for curls too, and is CG friendly.

    Here's what you do:

Once hair is completely dry (roots must be bone dry), sprinkle a tiny tiny shake of the powder on your crown, around the roots, even on your bangs if you want. Then just gently lift, push, scrunch the roots upwards, and you will be amazed at the lift you get! If it gets flat during the day, just re-scrunch it a bit at the roots.

Beware: the texture may feel a little odd, because it is this kind of "mattifying" stuff, so it won't be smooth and soft, but it will give you amazing height.

The powder also absorbs oil, so it's great for second- and third-day hair too.

    Here's a link to it on amazon. /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FOSIS-Dust-Mattifying-Powder-0-35oz%2Fdp%2FB001CN5S4C" class="Popup

Thanks girlysoxfan. I went to the beauty supply store, but they didn't have those "open" clips. But I'll try to find them and try that crown method.

Thanks, shana. I just ordered the Dust It from amazon. Hadn't heard of it. Worth a shot. :) Lots of good reviews on amazon for it.

I had better height today, cause the dew point is kinda optimal. :) But after my Pilates, I have crazy all over hair. Still have volume and height, it's just nuts from sweat and rolling on the cadillac. Heh.

I keep a spray bottle of ACV mix in the shower. Spraying helps keep it out of your eyes. I don't use much. Most people do 1 T to 1 c water. I also use Bragg's ACV. It's organic and has the "mother" in it. You can buy it at the health food store.

Oh, I remembered another product that might be helpful. Tweek from Curly Hair Solutions. Best used to SOTC, and also often used to give texture and height to roots.

I just looked at the reviews on amazon too, myself, and I noticed one that pointed out a weird thing about the product.
I sprinkle it on my (cough) Pattinson-length hair at the roots and then put my fingers on my scalp and rub. It really gives me a ton of volume, which is great now that I need a haircut. I like the pouffy look it gives me. However, it is IMPOSSIBLE to wash out! Yesterday I shampooed with Matrix Biolage Hydrating shampoo, and it didn't even lather up, just felt like I was adding water to my hair. After I let it air dry, it was still sticky, so I washed it with Redken All Soft. Still sticky. Went to the salon and bought some Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo (because they didn't have any Osis shampoos there). Still sticky after 3x lather-rinse-repeat! I have emailed the manufacturers to find out the best method for removing it, and will edit this review if I get a response. But yeah, I can get 2-3 extra days of hairstyle out of one application (so, 4-5 days without having to wash and restyle).
When I first started using this dust I was not CG, and I used shampoo and silicones and all the bad stuff. I found it weird to shampoo out too. But NOW, when I'm CG and using only condish to wash, the Dust-It powder comes right out! WTH??! AMAZING. Totally strange. But it just rinses away with my conditioner unlike it ever did with non-CG shampoo/conditioner.

That is definitely a curious thing. I wonder if something in the non-CG products interacts with the Dust It to turn it more sticky/gluey/difficult to wash? I know I don't want hard-to-remove gunk! :) Besides, I know it's specified here to use a "little", not a ton.

Before I saw those clip thingies linked, I did experiment last night with Jane Carter Solutions Natural Hold Spray Gel and big clips (holding up bangs and crown with three of them, big chunks of hair. Hair was dry. I clipped up the bangs and one crown section in middle-top, and sprayed some of the JCS spray gel. I actually had better crown lift today, but hair is definitely tackier/more producty. This afternoon, I put in small jaw clips on my bangs to keep them up, and took th em off just as hubby got home so I had some lift for his adoring eyes. hahaha.

I am gonna experiment with dry hair, clips, and gels/sprays and see what happens. :)

Hmm--I am reading this thread b/c I'd love to have the same thing--bangs and height!

I haven't felt so bad about the 'flat top' lately because I have become more careful about heavy products. I don't know if this is an issue for you (i.e. if your hair tends toward the coarse, mine is fine-ish with low porosity.) But when I started using low-poos and lighter conditioning and styling products it made a BIG difference.

For example, the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] is meant to elongate curls, as it says on the package. It tends to weigh me down, as does the BRHG. The lighter products like CK, mousses and lighter gels (runnier, sometimes with alcohol and less heavy conditioners, I love Aveda Flax Seed & Aloe and Matrix Biolage Gelee) are better for my hair as they don't take out all the volume and leave me with the flat top. Same with some conditioners--some that are well-loved on the boards just weigh me down a lot.

Not sure if this is helpful, but that's my experience . . . good luck! Btw, I know you're looking for solutions, but I think your pics are awesome--you look great with gorgeous curls!
2b/3a, fine, "naturally frizzy", non-porous, above shoulders, brunette
Low-poos--faves are Deva and JC, experimenting with CJ Gentle Cleansing Shampoo
Conditioners: faves are Devacare One-C, Jessicurl Too Shea
    Leave Ins: Conflicted relationship--no fave
Fave stylers: Aveda Flax Seed & Aloe over Aveda Phmollient mousse, KCCC over anything, Biolage Firm Hold Gelee (HG for spring/summer), CK

Thank you, Kiniha, for your suggestions. I have medium hair texture, although I think there is some fine mixed in. Because I'm so dry and porous, I need thicker conditioners and I need to seal with oil/butters. I try to keep away from the crown, but I do better if I really moisturize or by day's end, my ends start drying out again.

I am looking at some of your products, and I'll make note to look at products, review, and if they look good for my type, try them--the Aveda and Matrix. :)

Well, I fotki-ed some pics of me experimenting with clipping bangs and using gel on crown roots and DevaFusing and Finger-Coming out hair (poofy sides). I think full forehead bangs are out. I will have to live with halfsie bangs. I'm still working on getting that crown up, and I may have to stop supersoaking (I didn't in last pics) in order to reduce clumps. Clumped hair is heavier. I need lighter hair to lift things.

Well, I just uploaded pics of my hair today, and I'm REALLY happy with the combo of DevaFuser and a gel on crown: /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.fotki.com%2FMirCurls%2Fcurl-products-and-h%2Fimg-0243-jpg.html%23media" class="Popup

    That is the side pic.

I actually said to my husband (who took the pic after supper), "Is that how my hair looks, really?" He laughed and said, "No, I made these little squiggles on the digital photograph." ::sarcasm:: "That's all you, baby." He laughed again. I laughed. I really love this side view. The curls are not perfect (I always have some frizz, and some curls relaxed a lot from the heavy conditioning and oil sealing due to hugely dry day.) I think not having the scrunch position from pixie-curl makes the curl longer. I'm okay with that, really. :D

I used no clips, btw. Just lifted crown and bangs with DevaFuser. I think i had less frizz than usual (when diffusing in non-Pixie curl style) due to protein treatment.

The next two pics are back views and front views. The DevaFuser and gel combo gave me some crown lift and bang lift. Yay. I'm back to side part.

I am excited about trying this with Joiwhip mousse, to see if I can get MORE lift.

Ooh, Mir, it looks awesome! Looks like you got some good root lift, for sure. I was looking at the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/DevaCurl-DevaFuser-Kit-p-913.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=devacurl-devafuser]DevaFuser[/buylink] today at Ulta when I was picking up some JoiWhip and wondering if it would give root lift. You're making me wish I had bought it!

WavyBlonde, I'd look at it every time I went to GBS and kept looking at it at CurlMart. When I got the 20% off code a couple weeks ago, I went for it. You will get some frizz (if you normally get it from diffusing, like I do, as opposed to air drying), but I am willing to have some frizz (and it's pretty minimal) in order to get some lift. The Mir can't live with flat-top. No, ma'am. :D

So, I say, get it. Easy to use and hair dries much faster. I have a Sedu blow-drying (the ultra silent model) and it fits perfectly with the ADAPTER.

I'm pretty curious about that powder as well, let me know how you like it. I have a round face and look silly without some crown height. I've been rinsing my conditioner out upside down and leaving it that way until all products are in and excess water scrunched out. Then after airdrying about a third of the way I pixiecurl diffuse until almost dry, and finish airdrying. I've done it that way the last two times and it seems to be helping. Here's a pic of the first time I did it and you can see where the roots are standing up.
    CG since 2/23/10!

2B 3A mix, fine texture and high porosity at crown/bangs, normal elsewhere. I like protein!

Thanks for the extra info! I am definitely going to get one of these in the near future. I am going to try to wait until the next paycheck, though, since I've already spent probably $50 on products this month and I still have to get my highlights re-done. :angel9:
