Need some "twist" help

My girls are 8, and I usually keep their hair in braids. Once in a while, I'll leave it down, but they play soccer and basketball, so it gets to be pretty tangly. Anyway, I like to put it in twists also, but they never look as good as some I see. Short of coating their hair with something, does anyone have any good tips or tricks to keep it looking nice? I have some ORS Lock N Twist that I tried, but even that didn't seem to make them look nice. Maybe I'm not twisting it right (but really, how hard can it be to twist the hair lol).
They both have waist length hair when wet, but major shrinkage to just below their shoulders. I should be so lucky to have their hair.
