Protein Treatment Selection

I pretty much haven't used any protein on my hair since I discovered CG and realized I have fairly coarse hair back in the summer. I think my hair might need some protein because I'm losing curl, and I've heard a lot of people who can't use much protein do better getting their protein infrequently as a treatment. Is there any way to determine what PT might be good to try? Is there anything from a drug store or hair salon I could try? What about Joico Kpak...I know a lot of people use it but I thought for some reason it had mineral oil. I guess for one use that wouldn't be a problem though. Does AOGPB tend to be a good bet? I'm in Canada so while I'm thinking of trying Spiral Solutions, it probably won't be for awhile and I think my hair needs protein ASAP.

AOGPB is great, especially for a gentle dose of protein.

I sometimes use it as a daily conditioner but it is very rich and I get overconditioned...the periodic use for me really doesn't get it with this because it isn't strong enough for me.

I like Nexxus Emergencee as a once a week (for me) treatment and alternative to the K-pak.

I need so much protein though!!

    Wash: Deva Low-poo
Condish and leave in: OneC or Suave Coconut

Styler: Angell or the Deva foam, sometimes KKKC

Etc: Set It Free as a refresher

    I love hairspray...don't judge

I use AO GPB as my occasional heavy shot of protein; I'm medium to coarse in most areas and this does the trick for me. It has never dried out my hair, although I do it as a couple hour or overnight deep treatment and follow with a shower, so I always follow with a moisturizing conditioner anyway for good measure.

I never get OC-ed or lose curl, I just all of a sudden have wild frizz and lack of definition everywhere, telling me I need protein.

Yeah that's it! I'm not over conditioned, and I haven't lost curl as much as my hair is lacking definition and frizzy. I hope some protein does the trick! Maybe I'll give the AOGPB conditioner a shot since quite a few curlies use it...

I've found CJ Curl fix is great for a PT. I also use it as a rinse out and leave in. I do use AO GPB on occaision, but I hate the smell and it lingers. I've also used Joico K Pak and like it too. If you have hair issues with mineral oil, it may not be for you. Tigi Oatmeal & Honey is also quite nice. Of these 4, I find the CJCF performs the best.

I can only tolerate keratin, so I like the K-pak. The Aubrey GPB fried me out.

In the summer, I use the Reconstruct regular conditioner as opposed to the treatment since it has protein (thought less than the treatment) without the mineral oil. Mineral oil doesn't bother me with an occasional use, but I don't want to overdo it.

I did not like the AO GPB at all. It was extreamly drying on my hair even after DT's and I only used it once and didnt let it sit on for more than 5 mins LOL

I like the Elucene Extended Moisture Repair and usually follow that up with Jessie Curl WDT.

I ended up getting the K-pak reconstruct conditioner without mineral oil. I'll see how it goes today! I went to the Joico website yesterday to check which salons near me have it, and went to one that was close by to my doctor's office today since I had an appointment. Oh god...it had more hair products than any salon I've ever been in. It was like a huge room of hair products. I'm sure a lot of them aren't CG but I'm definitely going back to scope out the ingredients...I would have spent forever in there but I only had enough cash on me for the PT.

Okay I co-washed with CJDF, sulfate shampooed my bangs just because I haven't for a few weeks and I've been using a silicone heat protector on them, then put in the K-pak reconstruct conditioner. I left it in for 15 minutes or so, rinsed, and put in some JCWDT. I'll probably leave that in until I shower before going to bed...I'm hoping this actually makes a difference for my hair!

Can someone weigh in on which protein treatment is more intense - cj curl fix or emergencee? I have both and I am thinking the emergencee is more intense.

I am pretty sure I am in need - my canopy is very frizzy and my curls loose definition as the day goes on.

Rudee, I think shampooing is only necessary if you use products that will build up on your hair. You should be fine just doing a cowash before using the Emergencee. Just make sure you do a DT afterwards. :)

I've used Aphogee and it didn't do anything for my hair and I can't find Emergencee anywhere near me. I use L'Anza Hair Repair Reconstructor now. It's a keratin treatment that is only left in hair for 3-5 minutes. I don't know as much about ingredients as others here, but I love it! It does great on my hair. My only issue with it is that it does contain parabens, but so does Emergencee. I don't worry about it much since it's the only product I own that has them.

Anyway, here are the ingredients (I had to had type them so I hope I spelled everything right!):

Water, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine, stearyl alcohol, acetamide MEA, cetrimonium bromide, stearic acid, safflower seed oil, keratin amino acids, vitamin A, Vitamin C, vitamin E, rosemary leaf extract, nettle extract, comfrey root extract, apricot kernel oil, algae extract, sodium PCA, magnesium PCA, zinc PCA, manganese PCA, dimethicone PEG-8 meadowfoamate, caramel, phenoxyethanol, methylparaben, diazolidinyl urea, propylparaben, propylene glycol, sodium benzotriazolyl butylphenol sulfonate, buteth-3, tributyl citrate, tris (tetramethylhydroxpiperidinol) citrate, citric acid, glycolic acid, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, sodium hyaluronate PW, fragrance, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, lilial, D-limonene, yellow 6, yellow 5.

Nallia, where do you get the L'anza treatment? I'm normally protein sensitive but my curls occasionally need a hit of protein and Keratin seems to do the trick. It looks good as far as ingredients go so I may try it.

Since I didn't experience much one way or the other from the K-pak treatment, I decided to order some Curl Fix...I ordered two tubs of CJ Rehab too, so that should be a good DT after the CF PT. Hopefully something gives me more curl again!

I get great results from K-Pak Reconstructor treatment (deep, not the reconstructing conditioner) when it's done with HEAT, ie, sit under a bonnet dryer (with a processing cap) for 20 minutes minimum. (Or heat therapy cap or whatever heat application method one wants to use that will warm the protein treatment on the hair.)

I think just leaving it on fifteen minutes without heat is not gonna make it work optimally.

Since I ordered Curl Fix I think I'll try that first...but I picked up some Biolage CB today at the mall and they had samples of the reconstructor treatment for $3, so I got that...it should be enough for a single use, and I'll do it with heat, but probably not until after I've tried the CF and only if my hair feels like it needs protein in awhile.

I ended up getting a 1.7 oz sample size Joico reconstructor treatment (which confirms my suspicion that the 0.5 oz sample sizes from CJ wouldn't have been worth it for me! I use at least an ounce) and used that last night. I left it in for around an hour and used some heat with it. I DTed with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Weekly-Deep-Conditioning-Treatment-p-106.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-weekly-deep-conditioner-treatment]JC WDT[/buylink] after. I can't tell if it gave me more curl really since I decided to take a break from styling products, but it's definitely much softer.

I used my Joico on Friday, and it was crazy, crazy soft and much less frizz than usual. I have pretty decent third day hair today, too. I always love the results from my K-Pak deep treatment reconstructor--but I have been lazyin the past (only doing it like once a year). Now, I'm gonna do it monthly. :D

And I didn't get the CJ samples cause that size is ridiculous (for the price AND for the usage). I use at least 3 oz of Joico Reconstructor each time. I have porous hair, and it just SUCKS UP anything I put on it, even damp. So, Until it feels saturated, I just keep adding. Easily 1/4 to 1/3 cup.

Since you live in a humid state, you might want to give the regular Joico K-pak conditioner a look as well.

The protein amount isn't as much, and I did like it in warm humid conditions where protein would help frizz, but when I also didn't need the amount of protein a treatment would give me.
