Anyone else change texture with age?

I let my hair alone today, and my fine bits laid flat like they normally would, but I noticed that coming from the part and crown of my head, are COURSE pieces, that are coming out in spirals, which is COMPLETELY different from my fine hairs, which barely twist.

Hair lifespan:
When I was tiny itty bitty, I had baby fine straight hair. I could pull off the mod bob easily, straight across bangs and chin length bob. When I got older, it started to get a wave to it, but I didn't notice anything till puberty when I could get it to curl if I tried hard enough.

Hair heritage:
My father has baby fine Shirley Temple curls. Not a lot of hair, but when he grows it out he gets gorgeous man curls.

My mother has a head full of course hair that she doesn't know what to do with it. I keep trying to convince her henna will help her TONS but she keeps saying I'll ruin her bathroom floor with it. It was black until I was born, now it's almost completely white. It doesn't seem to curl, but if I got my hands on it I could change that lol.

My question is, did your hair change as you got older? Did it start out as one texture and change to another?

Is the hair on my crown just going to fall out and grow back fine? Am I going to go completely course? (not a problem with me because it's curlier than my normal hair)

What's going ooooon?!

My hair has always been fine. My mom and dad's hair couldn't have been more coarse and were that way as far back as I can remember.

Since I've started going gray, I'm a little bit coarser on the white hairs. I'm still largely fine textured though.

Yes, my hair has changed over the years. As I get more gray, I find the hairs are more coarse and the curl is looser. :( Maybe it's just that 7 year myth, but my hair was so much curlier about 7-8 yrs ago.

I am not as curly as I was as a child and teenager. My pattern has loosened from a 3c with some 3b to 3a with some 2c. It has gotten a bit more coarse, but nothing drastically changed in that aspect.

My hair has changed since I was a child, but overall, it's still pretty much the same. I was more of a 3C till about 10 - 14ish. Very thick, very curly, dry curls. My mom tried every homemade remedy under the sun, but my hair was just TOO MUCH. I couldn't wear a single pony tail because my hair was too heavy so my hair was in pigtails a lot.

Now my curl pattern has loosen up and is more managable, but it's still thick 3a- 3b ish and is easier to straighten and the salon ladies don't cringe anymore when they know I'm coming.

I think I've been the same since early toddlerhood..
Of course pretty much all babies have straight hair when they're born and so did I, but by the time I was 1 I had a cute TWA which was totally stylin for the times (mid 70s). :afro:

As a baby I had kind of wispy waves, but then my strands thickened (as most baby's do) and turned straight. I didn't get my curls till puberty. I don't think my hair's changed since then, at least not that I've noticed.

reading all of your examples everyone seems to be loosening with age, i'm going the opposite lol. I was stick straight till puberty, then fine curls, now i'm growing coarse little ringlets, but they're only new growth. I'm not graying either, I'm only 19, but I'm inclined to believe I'll gray early by my mothers example. This is just confusing me lol.

I have no idea why your texture is changing. I had no idea that could happen. The things you learn on NC.com. Curl pattern can change with changes in hormones. Birth control can do this. I have a relative who's curl pattern went from 1 to 2c in her 60's. This change was probably not hormonal. Who knows what causes these changes?

I don't know what its due to... but with me, a lot had to do with the fact that I learned how to do my own hair as I got older. My poor mom is like a 1B. And she gave birth to this:

She did good, but it was verryy painful growing up!!! When I did more conditioning, and untangling in the shower, used different products, I guess my hair calmed down.

Yes! My hair is not as coarse as it use to be and the top is not as curly (probably from years of blowdrying and straightening). It is also definitely not as thick either.

Yes, my hair was very thick, sorta wavy and a little unruly but not curly until I hit puberty.

Then it went crazy curly - a mix of mostly 3b with a little 3c and a touch of 3A over my ears - very thick and coarse and stayed that way until I hit perimenopause.

Since then it's gotten gradually finer, less thick and a lot less curly. It's still a mix but now it's mostly 3A with some 2C and a touch of 3B.

This is what sent me here looking for answers as to how to handle this totally different head of hair! I knew how to deal with that dependably very curly stuff, but the unpredictability now is a challenge.

Neither my mother nor my father have even wavy hair. I got mine from my maternal grandmother. Neither of my sisters had even wavy until their pregnancies, but now they're both at least 2C's, maybe even 3A's, yet neither wears their curly very much. IMO, both look better when they do. They're not willing to air dry or diffuse, etc. for it to look its best, nor to give up sulfates, silicones and flat irons!
    2C/3A/3B - modified CG - fairly fine now, normal/low porosity/normal elasticity

Current Main Rotation: MG217 medicated or Aim2Health 'poos for scalp, Elucence cond., Spiral Solutions Protein & Deeply Decadent Cond., CJCCCC reg or lite,CJ Pattern Pusha,, Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz + lots more, sporadically

HG Method: Super Soaker + Smasters-ing, brief upside down diffusing w/360o diffuser then clips/clamps & air dry. Newly gray - stopped my henna glosses!

    They just keep coming in!
Little black curls are poking out of my layer of fine straighter hair!

Today, I noticed a little tiny curl sticking straight out in the front. The coil it makes is a centimeter in diameter and it's so tight it boings right back to my head. It's only one strand of hair but it's so noticeable.

I lifted up a straight hair that was poking out the back and all these coarse little curlies were holding on for dear life!

    They're sprouting everywhere!

I have no clue what's going on!

I was born with fine, thin, type 1 hair. And then the puberty monster came. angry9:Type 1 changed into 3a/3b/3c overnight until I began flat ironing my hair religiously. Now that I'm done doing that my hair looks to be about a 2 something with some 3as and a few 3bs underneath the canopy, but that could be just due to damage. But the 1 to 3 was a very drastic change and I had no clue how to handle it.

curlyerika that's exactly what happened to my cousin, we had the same hair until puberty and then she went straight to curly.

I've already hit puberty so this is completely weird lol.

In addition to the different lengths and the different ways my hair has been taken care of, the hair itself has changed over the years.
As a child I had thick, medium brown, silky, 3a hair. I still have a hunk of it from an early haircut.
In my late teens it turned into very thick, very dark brown, 3b-3c curls. It pretty much stayed that way into my 30's and 40's.
In my late 40's I started to go grey and have thyroid trouble so my hair started to change again.
Now my hair is a little thinner but not fine, the color is a mix of grey brown and almost black, the grey hairs got less curly but more kinky, and my hair is a mix of 3a, 3b, 3c curls.
    --I'm located in Western PA.
--I found NC in late 2004, CG since February 2005, started going grey in late 2005.
--My hair is 3B with some 3A, texture-medium/fine, porosity-normal except for the ends which are porous, elasticity-normal.
--My long time favorite products are Suave & VO5 conditioners, LA Looks Sport Gel, oils, honey, vinegar.

This is exactly me too (except for the flat ironing - I could never haul it out of bed in time for that kind of morning routine :cat:). These days the hair is pretty much 3aish all over.

It's amazing to think how hair changes. I had curly hair as an infant, then it became wavy, then it went straightish for a few years, then it got wavyish with frizz in puberty through mid-teens, then it got curly with frizz in late teens, then it got CURLY like nobody's business in my full adulthood. It seems to get curlier each decade, no kidding. I have a Fotki album of my hair from babyhood on through last year, and the one at my seventh birthday shows my hair smooth and pretty straight. And my communion pic has mostly smooth with curl at the end, but that's cause my mom spent a long time curling those ends around her finger.

I am still astonished at how hair changes.
