argh! Help!

I started CG this week, and all seemed to be going great. This weekend I wanted to do a PT and a moisturizing DT and all of a sudden my hair has gone all weird on me!

Last night I did a low-poo with Desert Essence Raspberry shampoo, then put in Joico's K-Pak reconstruct conditioner for a few minutes before rinsing it out. Then I mixed honey and EVOO and put that in my damp hair and left it on for about 30 minutes before rinsing. I wasn't able to get all of the oil out so I slept on it, and this morning did another low-poo with conditioning. But my hair seems different now. The texture doesn't feel as soft and I have a lot more frizz today with less curl definition. Could it have been the EVOO?

It was my first time using the raspberry shampoo, and my hair did feel a little too squeaky clean after I washed it, maybe it was that?

Should I do another moisturizing DT to re-balance my hair? Can anyone recommend a good one, preferably not too expensive?

The regular Joico K-Pak has mineral oil. Not sure about the reconstruct conditioner. Mineral oil causes many of us issues. For me, it makes my hair feel "odd"--dry and coated. For me, it's hard to remove and it took my hair 7-10 days to get back to normal.

My hair likes the more natural products. Mostly the ones you buy online from the smaller companies.

My hair did not like the K-pak treatment either, took a couple low poos before it looked and felt right again.

Thanks Kathymack. That's exactly how my hair feels. Dry and coated and so does my scalp, for that matter. Perhaps I didn't need a protein treatment after all? I will try to avoid mineral oil and maybe stick with known brands for DTs rather than make my own. At least until I know a little more about what my hair likes.

For a moisturizing DT, can you just use your regular conditioner and leave it on for longer (ie:30 minutes) or do you need a special type of DT? I think I read that some people like Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition, but wonder if they leave it on their hair for a long time?

tprol, I use the GFTN as a DT, like you say, just leave it on half an hour or so. I also have good luck with the Queen Helene Cholesterol hot oil treatment. It does not contain mineral oil.

I wouldn't take that to mean you didn't need a protein treatment. All this means is that your hair doesn't like mineral oil. My hair is fine and I do at least one protein treatment a week. My hair LOVE protein and I use a lot of products with protein, too.

Since your hair is medium texture/medium porosity--you shouldn't need to to it as often. I'd suggest that you try monthly PTs. The products I use are so moisturizing, I don't need to do DTs. You should follow you PT with a DT and experiment as to how often you need to DT, otherwise.

If you used the KPak daily conditioner, it does NOT contain mineral oil (I know - my hair hates mineral oil, so I checked). However, if you used the actual protein treatment (it comes in a tinier bottle) that does. The daily condish does have some form of not-quite-water-soluble 'cone, I think. I had Goob look at the ingredients for me on another thread, and she indicated that there was a 'cone derived from protein in there, I think.

Oh no! You're right Finaleofseem - I did buy the conditioner instead of the deep penetrating reconstructor by mistake (it said 'reconstructor' on it, so I just assumed), and it does contain a cone. So much for my first week doing CG without cones! I guess I'll have to use a sulfate -based shampoo tomorrow and start over. At least now I have some idea of what went wrong. Hopefully it doesn,t take a week for my hair to get back to normal.

Oh, the cone that says "cone" at the end is PEG-modified, at least on my bottle. That means that it's water-soluble, and won't build up on your hair.

Some people still have issues with these 'cones weighing their waves down, but some of us don't. It's really personal preference.
