I'm losing my hair and my mind!

For 16 years of my life, I was an active swimmer, with naturally curly hair. (3a) Throughout the years, I noticed my hair was thinning but figured it was from the chlorine.

I am now 20 years old, haven't been swimming for 2 years, and the problem remains. (I am continually noticing the problem as I look at pictures from the past)

I've tried switching shampoos, and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Because of my hair loss problem, I am forced to clean out the shower drain almost once every two weeks!! I don't know what to this rate, I'll be bald at the age of 30! Help!

Any suggestions?

If you've switched shampoos and the problem still persists, I'd think the problem is internal. Here are some things I'd consider (having been there myself):

    1. Are you eating a balanced diet with enough protein and vitamins?

    2. Given the onset of your shedding, it's possible that you may have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). This is what ended up being the problem for me. You can do some google searching, but I'd recommend talking to your doctor about your hair and asking if this may be the issue. S/he will likely recommend a few hormonal tests to make sure your levels are OK.

    3. It's possible that the hair loss is because of thyroid a thyroid condition. Again, this would require doctor's testing to confirm.

Regardless, if you've been having this issue for four years, I'd go see a doctor, either a GP, a dermatologist, or an endocrinologist. And, if you're looking for women who have been there, is a message forum like this one, only the subject is female hair loss.

    I hope this helps.

I agree that it may be a health condition. Also, are you using a shampoo with sulfates in it? What else do you put in your hair? Do you use heat often? Do you wear tight ponytails or buns? Is it thinning all over or just in certain areas?

Paula Begoun the cosmetic cop has an internet radio show. On the last show, a caller was loosing her hair at age 28. Paula told her to go see a dermatologist. She told her at 28 hair loss is not normal. She said there are several causes of hair loss, many of which can be easily treated treated.
After listening to the show I thought Paula was kind of an idiot. However, in this case I think the advice is sound. You need to see a doctor.
    Good Luck.
