In need of an effective DT asap!

Recently I've decided to go blonde again by slowly adding highlights into my hair which is a mix of dirty blonde roots and reddish copper at my ends. My hair was very healthy and already quite porous prior to the highlights. Now I'm afraid its getting a lot worse even though I've had them professionally done its still been pretty hard on my hair. My hair likes protein alot and is medium texture.

Its already dull and very dry looking. I've only had half my head highlighted, but I'm a little scared it will start falling out or breaking off soon. Any suggestions? I'm desperate and would try just about anything at this point. :dontknow:

Have you tried the Aphogee two step treatment? You can get it at Sally's. It's supposed to be the mother of all protein treatments. If you do a search you should find info about it on here.
    CG - 3/27/09
    3b - dry - medium texture/medium porosity!
Co wash/rinseout/leave in: currently auditioning products

I've heard of the aphogee treatment, I was going to use it as a last resort. I'm cautious about it since a friend of mine with very damaged hair used it once but she got some breakage on her ends. I dont know if that would happen to me. Anyone tried aphogee with a similar hair type/condition as mine???

Sally's has Ion effective hair care treatment (2$ish a packet). It is a more mild PT, but it is strong enough for me.

Another good one is Redken CAT. if you go to makeupalley.com, there is a user whose name is katdan and she has a whole notepad on protein treatments. CAT is not as strong as Aphogee but works very well.

Once you do protein, you then need to add moisture to your hair afterward. Hands down my favorite is Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment used with a heat cap.

Hair Type - medium to fine texture, high porosity, lots of it, type 2b/3a

My daughter has dyed over her highlights and very damaged hair. She uses the Aphogee two step and it has worked wonders on her hair. She loves it. I also use it occasionally and like the results. I've attached a before and after pic of her. Hopefully you'll notice see the difference

Thanks for all the recommendations so far! I actually have the Redken chemistry shot phase in Extreme - I wonder how close it is to the CAT treatment. I agree on the Jessicurl, I have both the WDT and the TS!

Bleach blows holes in the cortex so you need protein to reconstruct.

    I like
Sally's Beauty Supply- Ion Repair Solutions Hair Reconstructor - protein
Ion Effective Care Intensive Therapy- protein and moisture

Good idea.... I've used Ion conditioners before and love them, but I'm not sure if they are CG approved or not since I'm pretty strict about not using cones or sulfates. I would probably use one as a daily conditioner since I really dont think at this point I can overdo protein in my daily regimen. If I could find a gel with protein I would include that too. lol!

I was reading in another thread posted by lindykat who also needs lots of protein, and it was suggested that she could use coconut oil. Would that be worthwhile to use in my hair too? Can anyone tell me where to buy coconut oil and how do you use it?

I love coconut oil! You can get it anywhere really. I get mine at walmart (cheap!). You can get it at any helath food store too like Whole Foods. It comes in a jar. It's found near the olive oil. It's solid at room temp but readily melts. I melt it by running the closed jar under warm water for a minute, then I add a tablespoon of it to a tablespoon of olive oil. I'll then add a moisturizing conditioner to the mix (like Curl Rehab). Then I'll slather it on wet hair and leave it on overnight and rinse it out in the morning.

Hehehe... I'm reading YOUR thread now! Maybe we should get together and wrap random pieces of meat around our heads. I'll post if I find something good.

Aphogee is a really good protein treatment. You just have to make sure you follow the directions, and not manipulate the hair once the product hardens in it.

My hair no longer likes the Aphogee shampoo and moisture conditioner (I now use Giovanni's Tea Tree Tripe Treat shampoo, cowash with Suave Coconut, then apply AOHR conditioner for moisture).

You can probably use your own shampoo/cond as well.

WOW that's like all the protein's available in one place LOL! I can't find anything not CG in there..those sensitive to polyquat's will want to note it's got 11 which can be tough to get out and can build up...so just watch that if you are sensitive.

Wow thanks lindykat, that looks like it would work for a couple of protein junkies like ourselves!! ;) and if it comes down to it im not against the meat idea at all. lol! jk but I have subjected my hair to some pretty funky concoctions that I've cooked up in my kitchen. Note to self: keep dairy products far, far away from hair!

Thanks Laura Lee and everyone else for the coconut oil suggestions! Thats one of the next things on my list to purchase this weekend. I'm going to get a few different daily conditioners. I'll see about the Mop extreme too.

Interesting. I've only gotten it from my walmart at home, so I'll have to see how my walmart at school compares when I finish off this jar. I'll keep in mind to check by vitamins if I can't find it in cooking oils though! :)

Yay!! :toothy8: Very happy to hear it worked for you. I like having the added conditioner in there because it makes it easier to handle I think, just because it has some density, but if it's the oils your hair wants, go for it!

No problem. Always willing to talk about coconut oil (aka my winter savior this year)!

I've only used aphogee, so I can't compare. I will say that I like aphogee and think it's really effective. However, recently on the boards, a member named runnerchicki has been making her own line of products. She has a protein treatment which someone (I wanna say Kathymack but I may be wrong) said it was the best PT she'd used. Her shop is here, but because she makes literally every product completely by hand, she's frequently out of stock (because everyone wants her stuff!). So you've gotta kinda watch it and check the updates for availability, but if you're looking for a PT, that one is becoming highly recommended. I've still got lots of aphogee left though, so I'll hold out on trying it til I run out (trying to be a good PJ!)

I just wanted to thank everyone again for their suggestions and do a quick update on my original post. After another round of highlights my hair was a bit fried, considering I'm a 7RG with level 11 highlights which are practically white in my hair!

It was definitely too much for my hair and since I had to do something quickly before my hair fell out, I decided to try the Aphogee Intensive protein treatment. WOW! All I can say is for the price of the product, I'm very impressed. I got the 4 oz bottle and used about half of it for my mid back length hair. It really helped strengthen my hair and the ends are much better. I'm going to be catching up on moisture for a little while but thats okay. Its worth the results! Not only did my hair have a lot of it's curl back, but it also looked loads better. I would highly recommend this as a reconstruction treatment. I left it in my hair 35 minutes while I dryed it with a handryer.Maybe next time I will let it in just a bit longer but anyways I still got impressive results.

Oh and I noticed after excessive protein my hair is a bit dry just on the ends, so I use a few drops of olive oil with argan oil and it works wonders!
