OT: Do you take stuff on this board personally?

eklecktikaeklecktika Posts: 230Registered Users
Just wondering-it appears some take stuff WAY too personally.

Just curious if you guys tend to take everything you see/read/whatever with a grain of salt, or if you let other folks bother you?

Some will know what I'm talking about...:angel2:

I think I did at first. I've come to realize that people have differences of opinion and many people disagree with me, just as I disagree with them.

There are times when this site reminds me of "Mean Girls."

EXACTLY! I personally get a kick out of stirring the pot-:toothy1:. It doesn't bother me when someone else doesn't agree with me, though apparently some folks don't like it when I don't agree with them.

I love how if you disagree, you're either a) an idiot b) a zealot or c) an extremist.

    Cracks me up!:laughing1:

The style of disagreement, dissension, and dialogue has much with to do with how one is perceived here. It's rare that a reasonable poster will be treated or responded to with a lack of respect.

With still being relatively new to this forum, I have found most everyone has been very kind and helpful, I haven't noticed many "rude" postings. Just like anywhere though, you're going to have unhappy people doing unhappy things...

I'm confuzzled. It's not here on the 2 boards, is it? if it's on the non hair discussion then I guess I know what you are talking about, not the exact thing though. some of the folk over there can be 'hard azz'es'. I wonder if that's how they are IRL or just a cover of someone they'd like to be;)

+1. Some topics of discussion are sensitive and people do take them personally. This is a decidedly majority female, feminist board (the whole of nc.com). If you expect to have a decent debate about an issue you must approach it with an open mind and a fair amount of tact. This is just my observation from the non-hair and politics boards. I lurk there a lot.

Yup, but that is the nature of a message board.

Heh, see, I just stay on the hair and 2 boards, because I already have my opinions on things, and so do other adult women. Nothing I say will change their minds, and nothing they say will change mine.

Plus, I *do* take things personally, because my political beliefs are near and dear to my heart. I have no problem discussing things IRL, but I believe that an internet forum makes it far too easy for people to deny the humanity of others and treat people with a lack of respect.

I say all of that having never even lurked on the non-hair discussion board, so I have NO idea what's goin' on over there. They could all be as sweet as pie to each other. I'm just not taking the risk. :)

I only ever look in the Hair boards, and they seem to stay pretty gentle and on-topic.

Which, come to think of it, is REALLY amazing if the same people are flaming each other in some other section.

I have no problem discussing things IRL, but I believe that an internet forum makes it far too easy for people to deny the humanity of others and treat people with a lack of respect.

That is so true. People often find "courage" behind a computer screen that they would never have in face to face interaction. They often misuse forums for personal agendas and I think this type of behavior is passive aggressive and cowardly. You are absolutely right that humanity and respect should be at the heart of every interaction we have with others, whether online or off.

The internet does foster a sense of anonymity that gives people some false bravado, I agree...

That being said though, I think a LOT of the girls on here that are accused (and perhaps rightfully so) of being "mean" and aggressive with their view points are every bit as up front, blunt and aggressive in their day to day lives. I don't know them personally to be sure, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

Some people feel strongly about some issues. It really can be as simple as that. It's not so much that someone's taking what you say personally, as they're taking you SERIOUSLY and feel the need to explain why they feel the way they do about the opposite opinion.

(and as a side note... I kind of hate to break it to you, but threads like this after the abortion thread REALLY come across as "boo hoo, everyone hates me" type threads. Whether that's an accurate assessment or not, I can't be sure. But that's what it looks like, just so you know.)

I came back after a year hiatus and posted about something and was eaten alive on the non-hair boards. Since then I tend not to post on topics that are hot button or project my own opinion too much. Some regulars can be nasty to newcomers because there are certain people who come on just to be nasty so they are on alert. But don't get too discouraged. There are some wonderful curlies/wavies on NC and can offer some great advice. :love5: Don't take what some others say too personally.

I am very good at taking criticism (constructive or not), and I don't get upset if people disagree with me. I like to hear other people's opinions. But I forget that not everyone is like that and sometimes I can stir things up because I have no problem letting someone know when I disagree with them. Sometimes my facebook friends get a little miffed ... :angel2: I think I'm always diplomatic, but some people are soooo sensitive...

I do lack diplomacy at times. I know this. The passive aggressive method of being a spineless jerk IRL and being an aggressive ______ OTW is just ridiculous.

At least I can say that here, IRL, or anywhere else-I have my opinions, I don't hesitate to make them known, and quite frankly, I don't care if you don't agree.

It boggles me that some people expect 'respect' and 'tolerance' for their opinion, yet, when it comes to others, they're the first to throw rocks.

Eh, whatever. At the end of the day, I am who I am and those that don't like it can go fly a kite.

Though I am not a huge poster on this site, I lurk around all the time looking for advice or hair product reviews, and occasionally chiming in when I think I can be of help to someone asking a question... but I never venture over to the non-wavy boards, especially not the non-hair-related boards. I respect people's right to their own opinions, and would hope they would do the same for me. I have never felt much of any animosity on the wavy board.

On a subject like abortion, however, I think the problem is that there is no grey area and no room for compromise. It is a fundamental disagreement that I would think doesn't have too many people who change their opinion. Kind of like believing or not believing in God. Neither side will ever waver, and the belief is so deep-seated that one side cannot even understand how the other side could think as they do. Again, I respect that there are others that do not believe what I believe, but I just rarely feel the need to engage them in debate about it. I'll stick to the happy discussions about hair gel :)

    *I'm a peach, I bruise easily.

But not over a difference of opinion. But when others have a lack of respect for mine or try and force their ideas on me it really bugs me. Or when they are being mean just to be mean, it is immature and I think it shows a lack of education.

For example, I have a really hard time with my little sister in law. Bless her heart. (ummm... no not really) We have a very different view on vaccinations. I don't care if we have a different view, but when she calls me a bad mom for my much researched, and much thought over what I have decided would be best for my child it really gets my panties in a twist. Especially because she has no idea what she is talking about. Let alone the fact she can't even take care of her own life. But it is ignorance like that which can tare families, and friendships apart.

I do occasionally take things personally. I think that's human. Especially when people say things like, "Well, if you think/do such-and-such you must be a so-and-so kind of person (insert pejorative adjective here). But I also understand that this is just going to happen on a message board where people freely express opinions. I'm sure I've done it to others.

rabbit24 nailed it -- it happens on those hot-button topics where people's opinions are not going to change. I need to learn to stay out of those threads. There's probably nothing to be gained there.

I agree that, overall, people are very nice and supportive. Not just on the hair boards. And even the hair boards can get testy! I've seen a couple of trainwrecks over there that have had me shaking my head....

    Wurly and proud!
