For those with MBL and WL 3c curls

curledlovecurledlove Posts: 444Registered Users
I want to grow out to one of these lengths. How long did it take your hair to get there and how long is it stretched?

I want to know what the actual length of my hair will be by the time it is MBL or WL dry and how much longer I'll take to get there. I've currently been growing out for 27 months and my hair is BSL stretch and approximately SL dry.

My youngest daughter has Rear Length hair. She's six and hovered around SL until she was 3 due to my ignorance on moisture importance. But from about 3 until 6 it grew from that length to her Rear Length hair. She has type 2 hair, and is about MBL unstrecthed and dry.

Her sisters are 8 and have WL hair. I think it was about 2 1/2 years from past SL to get to WL for them. They have type 3 hair. Their hair is about APL unstretched and dry. They get super skrinkage.

How do you moisturize her hair (what do you use as a moisturizer and how much do you use) and how often ?

    TIA

WOW from WL they shrink to SL?! This sounds a lot like my hair. For some reason I feel like no matter how long it gets it will always shrink to SL, meaning that when its really long it will just look really big. I hope I'm wrong and that my length will actually show at some point.

    Keep 'em coming ladies!

I moisturize once a day in winter/spring. Summer/fall it's twice a day because the sun dries their hair out and they can't seem to keep their sunhats on, lol.

For moisture I use Distilled Water + Condish mixture, or Distilled Water + few drops of a kid friendly essential oil that's good for growth/scalp cleanliness. But, lately it's been Distilled Water + Aloe Vera Juice.

I spray one of those mixtures onto their hair, just to dampen not soak it--I leave soaking for wash days--and seal it with tiny amount of Avocado or Coconut Oil. Like a dime size amount of oil.

In the summer, I do that in the morning and at night long before bed so their heads are bit dry before sleep. Because of the sun, it really has to be done twice a day during the hot months or else my 3s get super dry and frizzy hair that turns light brown and my youngest gets hair that goes str8, won't hold a curl, and gets a dusty greyness to its dark black.

However, I do use a leave-in and gel on their hair too, applied after a shampoo + condish only, which is 1-2x a week. We use KCNT + KCCC right now. So, when I do the mositurizing throughout the week, what I'm mostly doing is refreshing those products. Those products help retain moisture due to ingredients like agave nectar and marshmallow, so I don't have to make their hair extremely wet daily or add more product. I use a small amount of the KC products because I find damp hair + oil to be great to avoid product buildup and don't use a lot of oil so I avoid greasiness.

Yeah, my eldest girl gets hella skrinkage. If I want it to show greater than the APL when dry, I have to weigh it down with lots of leave-in and gel. I stopped doing that regularily because of buildup. I do it on special occassions only. Even so, it only lasts about 4 hours and then it'll still skrink back up, lol. I've just accepted that their hair will never show the WL and beyond length it really is when dry for very long or at all most times. Even if they got floor length hair it would just skrink back up to APL or lower, lol.

It's all trial and error, but I err on the side of having more water than anything else. I make only enough to last for that day's use because I'm weary of anything spoiling. For this week I have been trying 2/3 distilled water to 1/3 aloe juice and then added a bit of lavender eo today for scent.

The actual length of my hair is WL and when I do WnG's it shrinks to BSL and when I do dry twist-outs on an old WnG it's MBL. But, it really depends on each person. I have seen fotki of a couple people that have WL hair and it shrinks up to their shoulders. Not exactly sure what my hair texture is cause I think everyone determines this differently. I thought it was 3c/4a. But, I have been told by others it's 3b/c.

You can always go to my fotki to see if you like.

WL to BSL would be lovely. I'm so terrified to have WL hair shrink to SL! Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

When I was younger I had WL hair that shrunk to about MBL. Does that mean it will be the same in the future when my hair is at that length?

Oh and how long did it take you to get your hair to that length?

Thank you so much! As long as you are a member of Fotki you can view my photos. That is the only stipulation. You can just sign up to be a member if you aren't already. You don't have to add photos or anything.

Not sure if your hair length would be the same length as it was when you were longer. Just because hair texture tends to change as we get older. But, hopefully so.

I've pretty much had a least APL all my life except for the two times I cut it into a chin length bob. So I honestly can't tell you how long it takes. I had hair to my butt in November 2007. Then I got it cut into layers with the shortest part at my chin and longest a little past my shoulders (pictures in my Fotki of haircut). Then last March (2009) I got it cut again. I think 4-5 inches and as of November 2009 it was WL. So from just past my shoulders to WL it took less than 2 years. I'm pretty sure it was already WL when I got it cut in March '09 or at least pretty close to it. But, I had not straightened it so I don't know for sure.

I will say that if you are not straightening it and just keeping it in its natural state it will grow without you knowing. Also, as long as you don't straighten it you also don't really have to get hair cuts except for maybe once or at the most twice a year. When I straightened my hair in November I did NOT have one split end and the last hair cut I had was in March. So that was 8 months. I still haven't had one. I won't get another one unless I see split ends. But, I promise your growth will sneak up on you. I had no idea my hair was at my waist when it got there. I was so surprised.

    Just have to be patient.

You also have to take height and neck length into account. The same length of hair will look very different on a person who's 5 feet tall than someone who's 6 feet tall.

I'm mbl when stretched or straightened. Depending on how I style, it can range from sl to apl curly. I do have a tail that will take it to bsl sometimes LOL.

I think it depends on your texture and the products you use and how you style. When I twist, it stretched my curl and it appears longer. Wash n go's mean huge shrinkage.

Mariag (I hope I spelled her screen name right) is very close to WL straight and she has quite a bit of shrinkage. Hopefully she'll chime in.

I'm full MBL, touching WSL right now and my hair still shrinks up to somewhere in the shoulder length area.

@NCE, @mariag, are these your lengths with curly or with straightened hair ?

I think both of these ladies are those lengths stretched. Mariag said she shrinks to somewhere in the shoulder area and NCE didn't mention her shrinkage level. Hopefully she will soon. Thanks for all these great answers ladies! keep em coming I'm anxious to know!

For my twist-outs I usually do them on an old WnG. So on the third or fourth day I will apply either Jane Carter Nourish and Shine (Summer) or Darcy's Botanicals Madagascar Vanilla Styling Creme (Winter) to each section before I twist. I have fine/medium hair so I do about 8 twist. I do them very loosely for a wavy affect. That can last me two weeks!! Which is great for when I am being lazy!!

I did try this week-end to do it on wet hair (the loose twists) and it came out pretty good. Normally when I do them on wet hair they look awful. But, I think I was doing too many and too tight. It almost looks like my WnG. I followed the same method, but I did 10 twists this time. I know my hair looks thick in pics because of the volume I can get sometimes, but it isn't at all. My 10 twist are so thin it's not funny.

Oh, and someone asked again about my WnG length. I did post it when I originally responded which is above. But, I will provide it again breaking it out this time.

    WnG = BSL
    Twist-outs = MBL
    Stretched/Straightened = WL

I believe my hair doesn't shrink as much becuse it's fine/medium. But, I'm not sure. Also, my tighter curls are on the top layer of my hair and my looser curls are on the bottom layer of my hair. The bottom layer is more wavy in spots as well as the front section of my hair. Which means I have to try and scrunch those areas to get it to somewhat look curly.
