how to use coconut oil

lostncurlylostncurly Posts: 9Registered Users
Greetings wavies
I'm still struggling to deal with the frizzies. I thought I figured it out a few days ago. I used a lot of gel HETT mixed with BRHG. My hair dried great but but looked very dull. I see that several of you seem very happy with coconut oil. How do you use it? I thought I'd try it as a leave in mixed with my regular leave in. Advice please.
Fine
Highly porous
Normal elasticity
iii/very dense
no poo; co-wash TJ's Nourish Spa conditioner
Scrunch in HETT mixed with BRHG
Air dry; diffuse if I don't have hours to let it dry

Welcome. Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can make it's way into your hair's cortex. I like to use it as a prewash. Since the oil is making its way inside your hair, this takes a while. You want to leave it on at least 10 minutes, but something on the order of an hour would work even be better. I've also started to play with coconut oil for sealing. I've been mixing it with shea, but will try it on it's own too. Some people use it to SOTC. I found that my hair does not like coconut oil left on my dry hair, but likes coconut oil on wet or soon to be washed hair. Other people's hair has the exact opposite reaction and only likes coconut oil on dry hair. The blog in the link below suggests applying coconut oil and water to your hair before swimming to prevent chlorine damage. I use coconut oil because it prevents protein loss, adds moisture, can help prevent hygral fatigue.

Coconut oil link. If you want even more info, do a search on this blog for coconut oil. There are several helpful posts.

For the frizz, some people have found that using more leave-in helps.

Thanks for the link and suggestions. The learning curve is steep. I keep learning what not to do (over and over again). I think my hair likes coconut oil. I didn't plan to but I ended up using it as a deep treatment. I found out a little goes a long way when I woke up with hair that was still kinda wet with oil. So I just co-washed it out but didn't add in more. Next time I'll try just a teeny amount. Anyway good to hear that the oil was working its way to the cortex all night long. :)

You are not the first person to learn a little goes a long way. Sorry, I forgot to mention this. I usually describe the amount of oil you need before washing as enough to make it look like your hair is overdue for a washing, kinda greasy, but not an oil slick. Glad it is working for you.
BTW, there is no difference on the way they work on hair but Virgin coconut oil has a nice coconut fragrance and regular coconut oil doesn't smell like coconuts.

I haven't tried your suggestion yet. The over the top oiling was my own doing. I posted my question and then promptly melted a heaping teaspoon and mixed it into an equal amount of my LI. I didn't wait for a response. Good thing I had the morning off yesterday. I learn a little more each week about my hair and yet I still fight the urge to cut it back up to my ears.
When I use up what I have I'll have to try the virgin coconut. yum!

Haven't tried my advice yet??? Come on, it's been 8 hours. :pirat:
Since you also have fine and porous hair, my advice in the 2nd and 4th posts in this thread may also apply to you. (and in the other reply on that thread.)

LOL Most days I feels as though I have to choose btwn frizz-free curls/waves or a life. It's a tough call. :) Most of the time I settle for frizzy waves and too much to do. Tomorrow I'll try the coconut pre-wash I promise. :) I did read the other post too; it had caught my eye. thanks!
