Have you tried using a leave-in and/or styling cream under your gel?

for light, crunch-free definition you could try a curl activator gel on wet hair.

Olive oil +/under your gel or activator

Or Hair Milk +/under your gerl or activator

    either might help!

Some brands to try are :
Softee Curl Activator, Qhemet Biologics Honey Hairbush Tea Tree Soft Gel,
Long-aid Curl Activator, BLUE Fantasia Gel for chemically treated hair.

    HTH!
    products:
co-washing with any Aubrey Organics product
Olive Oil +/under leave-in for super soft hair!
Whipped Karite/Shea or Avocado butter leave-in
Also lots of water, pilates and meditation

    Hi,

I've been using Jane Carter Solutions, Wrap and Roll as a curl definer. I do a finger twist (simply pulling pieces and wrapping them around my finger) and it has given me a really soft, but controlled hold. My hair tends to look better on the 3rd and 4th days, but the coil is still there. I love this. I use [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Curls Milkshake[/buylink] as a leave-in. The Wrap and Roll is like a light mousse. It's good stuff and only around $8. I get it from Wholefoods.
    Hair type: 4a/b...

Constantly seeking the perfect product combinations. I just want healthy and manageable hair!!!

For some reason, I cannot get those twists to work on my hair. Mine always come out like badly formed locs. Perhaps it's my texture; very fat strands and LOIS wiry. Is there a trick to it I might be missing?

i don't do a true finger coil where the hair i mostly just "twirl" it around my hair and let it curl up once it dries. diane da costa did this with my hair and that's where i got the idea. i can't do those thick full finger twists either...

Do you naturally have curl definition?
I ask because if its not there, then it is unlikely that you will get the hair to do something it cant.

On the 4a board I posted a "do-it yourself" [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Blended-Beauty-Curly-Frizz-Pudding-p-376.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=blended-beauty-curly-frizz-pudding]Curly Frizz pudding[/buylink] recipe (I think the thread is called New and Simple Recipe). I tried it last night and loved it. I got great definition by raking it through small pieces of my hair. I didn't even finger curl!! The setting lotion gave it a great set...no crunchies anywhere :D

I think the leave in conditioner is the trick. This time I was lazy and didn't put the leave in, for the first time my hair is crunchy with gel. It usually isn't like that. I use Infusium liquid leave in because it's compatible with my gel, Fantasia IC - clear.
    4b is me
