Trying Curly Girl Method

Ok so im trying this CG method is it basically no poo or even poo (with no sulfate) and using conditioners with very little silicone? I have been shopping around for no sulfate shampoo and found AVALON ORGANICS revitalizing shampoo ( no sodium lauryel or laureth sulfate) and I tried Desert Essence organics red raspberry conditioner 100% vegan wheat and gluten free with no sulfate or silicones!

I did not like the conditioner because i felt it wasnt as smooth as silicone conditioners on my hair and it just felt weird to me!

Any suggestions? I acutally just started using the avalon sulfate free shampoo and my regular conditioners containing silicones and i like that a lot better lol!

If anyone has advice or knowledge on this please do tell me! Thanks

Curly girl products are listed on the left side of this blog.

I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think aubrey organics honeysuckle and rose condish and yes to cucumbers (and maybe tomatoes) meet your requirements. These are guesses off the top of my head. You will have to check the ingredients.
AOHR is a very moisturizing conditioner if you need that. It's popular around here. Most (maybe all) of the AO condtioners are CG. Some have protein.
Yes to cucumbers is more of a medium amount of moisture.
Sorry I don't have anything more specific for you.

Hi! I actually just started on the CG method too (what better time than now, since I'm growing out my relaxer)! I'm currently using all of Deva's products, and I've found their OneCondition to be pretty moisturizing, I just have to leave it on for a couple minutes to let it sink in before I start to detangle.

But you're definitely right, conditioners with silicone in them did seem to moisturize better! However, I think they only felt like that because the silicone coated the outside of the hair strands. And unfortunately, I don't think NoPoo is able to wash silicones out.

I've also heard pretty good things about Curl Junkie's products, and their Dail Conditioner seems to have more oils in it tha Deva's, so it might be more moisturizing for you!

I have shoulder length 3b hair, so if you find something that works, let me know! I always love to find and try new products!

Find someone on the boards who has hair that is like yours in terms of texture (fine, medium, coarse) and porosity (low, medium, high). Most list their products and conditioners in their signatures. These two hair characteristics will help you narrow down some product and conditioner options because they are key in understanding how your hair takes in and holds onto moisture.

When I first starting read this board I read a post that said the Curl Junkie line was an excellent line to try for first timers and it is so true.

I have since tried other lines but I am still in LOVE with Curl Junkie (anything).

P.S. I'm about 3 weeks in, and you might find your hair a little frizzier at first, but if you play around with your products you'll find what works for you! I think our hair types are kind of similar, and I've recently been experimenting a little and leaving out the gel at the end and only leaving in my conditioner. It actually works pretty well because my hair is on the dryer side and soaks it all up. All the conditioner also helps to kill alot of the fuzzy frizzies that can sometimes pop up!

Im really excited to see how this turns out! Have you notice a big difference in your hair?

I have noticed a big difference in my hair, actually (but it was in pretty bad shape before)! To be honest I was kind of skeptical at first, but I think the combination of getting rid of shampoo, rehydrating my hair a little more, and scrunching my hair upside down with a tshirt to style it has left it in much better condition. I hope it's going well for you so far!

There are a number of threads about the CG method, I recommend you get comfy! LOL! Strict CG is no silicones, no shampoos, no brushing. Many people modify it to use low-poos (sulfate free) and water-soluble silicones. It's also advisable to avoid things like mineral oil, which are difficult to remove. You may need to experiment with conditioners as well. I found that the desert essence conditioners weren't particularly moisturizing, and didn't have much slip. Burt's Bees, Giovanni and Aubrey Organics work way better for me. Everyone's hair is different though, what is great for me might not be so good for you. Trial and error is half the fun!

Sdiaz ok i tried without the gel and i like it a lot better...I still feel i have a lot of frizz but my hair doesnt come out in clumps like it did when i was using silicones and sulfates. So i like the fact that there is way less breakage and my hair feels really soft. I guess the only thing i dont like is the frizz. lol

LIKETHEGUM thanks, yeah dessert essense made me want to give up because my hair was so dry afterwards lol! I am definitely experimenting everyday until i find something i love...im going to try and give this 2 weeks at least to see if there is any improvement. Where do you get [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] i see that a lot on this website

Kathymack from the boards sells samples of products. I haven't ordered from her, but I've seen posts from several people who have and have had good service. One of the samples she sells is [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]Kccc[/buylink]. This way you can try before you buy.

Some people have had success with Ecostyler krystal sold at Sally's (and other places) as a replacement for [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]Kccc[/buylink]. 3$ for a tub the size of your head. Can't beat the price.

As far as a good conditioner goes, I really like Biolage Conditioning Balm, it has great slip and makes my hair feel like silk in the shower and soft when its dry. Its on the expensive side, but I hear that the GVP version of the Conditioning Balm works just as well. I use the Biolage for both a rinse-out and a leave-in... I also use it as part of my DT and when I mix it with oils my hair is amazingly soft, I love it! HTH

Trader joe's has a some great conditioners, Nourish Spa, Refresh, and Tea Tree. Great conditioners, cheap and no cones, all natural. I would say these three condish are CG approved. This condish is great, all natural and cheap, I only paid 2.99 or less for this bottle. Here's the ingredients for Nourish Spa Condish :wav:

Ingredients – Purified water, organic rosemary oil, organic valencia orange citrus, organic mango, organic lemongrass, organic ginko biloba, organic echinacea, organic willow bark, organic sea kelp, organic chamomile flower, organic textured soy protein, organic lavender, organic grapefruit citrus, Tocopherol (Vit E), Acetamide MEA, Cetyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Methylparaben, propylparaben, botanical fragrance

only1frenchy- I'm glad your hair isn't coming out in clumps! haha! You know, there might be a couple reasons why your hair is still a little frizzy:

-your hair might still be adjusting to the new method, so maybe the change has your hair on the fritz.

-part of what causes frizz is breakage and not enough moisture in those pieces of hair, so as your hair continues to grow out and as you continue to no-poo and condition your hair, the frizz might start to disappear.

-lastly, if your hair is touched or moved before it's completely dry, then it'll start to frizz.

Hope the CG journey is going well!
