The way people talk about (healthy beautiful normal-looking) Hilary Duff seriously makes me want to belt somebody.

And didn't that girl battle an eating disorder?!
  • Mamacurl3Mamacurl3 Registered Users Posts: 1,559
I agree, not sure about the eating disorder. Either way, it's sad! I have a 6yr old who is already hearing and noticing stuff like this and hit scares me so much to know that she'll be surrounded by all of this crap soon. I do my best to teach her a healthy approach to body image, health and fitness I can only hope that my efforts stand up to the media and her peers :(

The comments don't bother me, personally, but that's because I know most of these actresses and models are either 1. already naturally thin and emphasize it by undereating/over-exercising, 2. or they are thin or normal sized to begin with and lose additonal weight by using drugs (cocaine, and/or prescription drugs), 3. they're totally photoshopped.

If I had a child I would tell them the truth about the images they see not being a true picture.

I think I may be a little more worried about peers and 'their influence by the media' and how they'll influence my kids.

I think there's not much you can do in the way of protecting children from messages and images that may affect their body image. Like MamaCurl said, just having friends and being influenced by their ideals can do the same thing to a kid's self-esteem as media images. There are universal expectations for beauty that you just can't escape unless you live under a rock.

I think what it comes down to is having common sense and being able to distinguish your reality from someone else's perceived reality.
I just want to do what I want to do when I want to do it.

My goodness after reading those sites, I'm tempted to change the name of my blog, I don't think I want to call it the skinnyfatchic anymore, although its about healthy weight-loss and lifestyle.

This kinda stuff is awful, my 9 year old niece will only wear dark wash jeans because "they are slimming" she is one of the skinniest kids I've ever met.

Seriously, it's hard to look good in the clothes that are popular now. Skin-tight shirts emphasize every ounce of fat on a person's upper body, and low-rise pants create instant muffin top. No wonder even thin people think of themselves as fat.
