No mirror, no blow dryer, limited time to spend in bathroom...how to cope?

This is something i have been thinking about. I'm only a sophomore now but I am going to apply for the Peace Corps soon. I wouldn't say it is a fleeting desire but it is something I haven't researched as in depth as I will be doing this coming semester to prepare my application. If I Am even accepted, I would be going when I graduate. I'm doing this online chat thing soon with a representative so i can get the exact details about if we are allowed to recive packages, how much water we will be using, if there will be a mirror, etc. However, I know it will be different.

So what are some tips that you all have for caring for natural hair in such limited environments. I will try to bring lots of hair care things with me obviously, but for a little over two years i wont be able to use my heat cap for deep conditioning. I don't know what the water will be like or how much i could use.

do you have any tips on how i can speed up my hair care routine? i dont really know what im asking. hopefully someone here has been through similar situations...

i was thinking of wear braids but then again i cant keep them in for 2 years!! and that would be beyond annoying taking them out while living there.

idk. my hair really gets in the way of things sometimes.

I have a several friends who've done peace corps or other long trips to places where they had limited access to water and many of the amenities we're accustomed to in the US. Really, it's not that bad. If you've ever been camping, it's like that but for a longer period of time.

When I've been on a trip like that, I like for my hair to be the least of my concerns. I'd rather use available water for washing my body lol. Anyway, a low maintenance hairstyle is best. Wearing braids, without extensions, is perfect. You can redo them easily, it keeps your hair out of your way, and you don't have to worry about "doing" your hair all the time.

Product wise...well it just depends on where you are going. If there's absolutely something you can't live without that won't be available locally, then take it with you if you can (you may have luggage restrictions or it just wouldn't be a good idea to bring whatever it is into the new climate). But, no matter where you go, people have ways to take care of their hair so usually there's something you can use. Water and oil goes a looooooong way, especially if your hair is in braids already. You'd be surprised at what you find you don't really need when you don't have access to it.

I agree with everything Maysay said. My question is where do you think you will go? I have a few friends who did peace corp some have natural hair some permed and hair was never an issue. Actually my friend who went to Thailand came back with a suitcase full of weave lol and I have to admit it was some great stuff.
Hair Type: 3c/4a/4b, fine, normal porosity

I'm applying to the PC in January and I would also like to go to a Spanish speaking country. What did they say about the packages people are allowed to receive? I know at the info session I went to the lady said we get water filters, but I don't know about how much water. I just assumed I'd be able to find an egg, a cheapo condisioner and some oil (idk why I assume I can find castor oil) which is basically all I would need. I also plan to bring some stuff, but I just don't think that it would be so much of a big issue. I have family in Jamaica and I would equate PC life to life in JA (since they are actually in JA too lol) and it's not too bad. I agree with maya and I think I will be wearing lots of twisted styles if I go.

oh cool! good luck on your app!
i havent spoken with them yet. the online thing is on the 7th. im going to an info session this summer probably.

yeah if i am accepted i am probably going to bring my own stuff but i worry about deep conditioning and stuff like that. not the product but i literally have to rinse my hair out three times when i wash my hair (once after BS cleansing/cowash, once after acv rinse, once after deep condition) i dont need a lot of water but what i think is a little may be different for people who live there. we will see.

good points about the oil. all i have is coconut oil right now, but ill stock up on some cheap oils like jojoba and olive. i heard about vatika oil or something as well. i just dont want to be the girl with a billion hair products but i know i will be that girl. i always am. lol

ive decided ill probably wear big flat two strand twists or big cornrows (in the event that i ever actually learn to cornrow my hair) with a bun in the back a lot. i have like 2 years to think about this and practice the routine b4 i leave though so idk why im worrying.

im definitely taking my staples with me: lots of leave in, some gel, qhemets heavy cream, baking soda, oil. big tub of shea butter will become my best friend. hopefully they will tell me that we can receive packages from home. if not...well lets just hope my hair doesn't fall out. lol
