Kelp supplements for thinning hair?

SpiralliSpiralli Posts: 3,682Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
I posted in another thread about how a friend at work has had great success with kelp supplements to help her thinning hair. Has anyone else tried kelp? Did it work for you or not?

I took a kelp mixture supplement for awhile, but it wasn't for my hair, it was actually to help with weight loss. I told my gynecologist this and she said to be careful because it can mess with your thyroid. Now I'm too afraid to try it again! But if it helps with hair, I might check with my doctor and give it a try.

Kelp would be beneficial IF you have low thyroid problems which may cause hair loss. I think seaweed or nori may help also. There are no completely accurate ways of testing for low thyroid so if you have low thyroid symtoms adding kelp to diet may help. Goji berries also help the glands. If you are hyperthyroid which is far less common than hypothyroid or low thyroid, kelp would be a problem. I should check my multi-vit!

This is interesting to me - I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer this past summer and had my thyroid COMPLETELY removed. I am now taking synthroid everyday. However, at the time of my diagnosis, my thyroid was functioning perfectly (and I had NO symptoms either, my masses were found during a routine check up for a swollen lymph node), it just had cancerous masses growing on it.

So, I'm wondering if I can take kelp. My hair was thinning out and became brittle after my radiation treatment for the cancer but I always had a small thin spot on top of my head (only on one side). It does not seem to get any worse but concerns me just the same.

I don't have a thyroid, so maybe I could try this? Anyone have experience with this - I plan to ask my doctor next time I see him but I jus thought I would throw this out there.
HG: Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (always and forever)
Cantu Naturals s & c (shampoo 1x a week), use conditioner as a co-wash every day and LI under my gel.

Air dry then diffuse canapy layers only for volume
Coconut oil before/after coloring grays and on ends.

2b/c mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color, protein sensitive but I still need it sometimes, glycerin-sensitive (I think) in high humidity. After 16 years on NC.com I FINALLY figured it out..

Kelp has iodine, which can help support thyroid, but won't do anything if thyroid isn't the cause of the shedding. Kelp is a food, so shouldn't really hurt to try, but if good results, you might want to see a doctor to get thyroid test, because treating it with meds might help more than just hair loss - low thyroid is bad for you in a bunch of other ways more serious than hair.
