Please help! So beyond frustrated I wanna cry...

Ok, so my hair has been steadily becoming less defined, droopy, frizzy, stringy, tangly and straw like over the past month. I've tried changing up some of the products that have worked for me in the past, but no go.
I thought maybe my hair needed protein since the vast majority of my products do not have protein.
I tried doing an egg/olive oil treatment (didn't have mayo), but that didn't make it any better.
So then I tried the nexxus emergencee, which I had my husband run out to get, because I've gotten to the point that I just wanna chop my hair all off. I left that on for probably 15 minutes, and as I sit here with wet hair I can tell nothing has changed that I can feel or see.
What else could this be? I've already been peeved with the postpartum hair loss I'm having, which I know is normal, but this I can't figure out?
Please please I'm desperate for any insight as to what this could be or what I can do about it. I'm open to ANY suggestions!

I've been using a variation of different products:

    co wash: VO5
condish: Mill Creek Aloe or [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Too-Shea-Extra-Moisturizing-Conditioner-p-105.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-too-shea-extra-moisturizing-conditioner]Jessicurl Too Shea[/buylink]
Leave in: Jessicurl CC or DM L&T
    Style: [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink]
    gel: BRHG or HESMU

I haven't used a DT, because I don't have any, and I already pushed our finances more than I should have getting the Emergencee.
Hope this helps. I hope there's something I can do with what I already have.

I also have tried using a clarifying shampoo one sulfate and a couple non sulfate such as leftover Mop Top Shampoo I had, and [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Hair-Cleansing-Cream-p-103.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-hair-cleansing-cream]Jessicurl Cleansing Cream[/buylink]. The sulfate helped slightly, but only for a couple hours on the day I used it, but did not do anything significant.

Well the weather is changing so that might have something to do with it. But have you tried doing a shampoo? Maybe you're getting some buildup from the JC products. Other than that I don't know what it could be.

You're right about the buildup I have been battling that lately. In the past though when I had buildup my hair would be greasy and oily looking at the roots. Where as now it is quite the opposite and is in fact very dry. As far as the weather I don't know my hair feels so unhealthy right now and seems to be getting damaged not just typical dew point related frizz. :(
Thank you Tinah for taking the time I appreciate it. Hopefully I'll get this figured out soon, because otherwise I'm either going to cut it or start using silicones and straightening my hair, because at this point it seems like it would be less damaging than whatever it is that's going on with my hair atm.

I went through the same thing a little while back and never did figure out what it was from. You know the water down here sucks. Maybe that has something to do with it too. Your hair is so gorgeous don't cut it all off. Someone here will help you figure it out I'm sure. I'm sorry that I can't be more help to you!

Judging by your post, it might be the aloe vera, some hair reacts badly too it. I'd try a new conditioner, there's plenty of cheap ones, try: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/showthread.php?t=76251&highlight=Budget

As for deep conditioners, you can make your own for a fraction of the price of a store bought try this collection of recipes: /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fhmbeautyrecipes.homestead.com%2FHAIRconditioner.html" class="Popup

Do you know your hair properties (texture, porosity, etc)? I had a lot of trouble with products before I knew more about my hair and what it likes/doesn't like.
  • tinahtinah Posts: 1,195Registered Users
Another thought maybe you need more conditioning than you're getting or if the only poo you're using is the JCC then try using a sulfate shampoo and do a DT afterward and see if that helps any. The JC CC isn't really a conditioning leave in. Maybe you need something more conditioning.

This was great when I was doing my damaged hair

    Ingredients:

    1 tsp honey

    2 Tbs olive oil

    1 egg yolk.

    Directions:

[FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Mix all ingredients in small bowl. Massage on hair in small sections. Wrap head with shower cap for 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo
    [/FONT]

except since my hair can't handle oil, I replaced the olive oil with my condish at the time.

At the bottom of the page is a list of what ingredients do what, so you can custom make your own!

I think my hair is medium porosity and medium texture.

I forgot to mention I was using Jessicurl RR with CC, and also tried using a DM leave in sample a few times, which didn't seem to help.

I will look into those recipes to customize, thank you for that! :) As far as the Aloe I actually had great results before with the aloe, but actually have been using the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Too-Shea-Extra-Moisturizing-Conditioner-p-105.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-too-shea-extra-moisturizing-conditioner]Too shea[/buylink] more recently and tried the aloe today for the first time in probably 2 weeks.

Thank you everyone for the input I definitely think I need more moisture. Maybe I'll just have to save up for a DT. I will let you all know when and how the suggestions I use turn out.

    Hi!
In your siggy I see you use KBB Milk.
I use it as a LI and also on dry hair before bed when my hair is feeling dryer than usual. (Wash out in AM)
It really moisturizes my hair pretty good.
I use the milk and the nectar (KBB) almost everyday it helps my dry hair quite a bit.

I also live in FL and something weather, water or who knows what has been effecting my hair also.
Don't cut it off just wait it out it will get better.

Sorry you've been in hair misery, although yours is so pretty, I can't imagine any issues. I would take a break from the Jessicurl, too, to see if maybe the mag sulfate is causing your hair to react this way. For moisture, I love AOHR and Hairveda Sitrahnilla...and recently found Joyce Williams Hair Food and leave-in (the LI has amodimethicone if you don't like that), and these products have given me great feeling hair the past week (but I know the weather has alot to do with it). Have you tried any of the Lustrasilk conditioners? I love the shea/mango, and I have the Argan Oil one, but haven't used it yet...they're all very moisturizing, though...

Have you always used JCRR and CC? They have magnesium sulfate in them, and I find that they make my hair stringy, strawlike and dry and take out my wave pattern. I can use her shampoos and condishes but not the stylers. Just a thought.....

ITA with rymorg the combo of Mag Sulphate and the Oils in JC stylers are horrid for me. I wonder if the oils in DM L&T are bothering you too that stuff is heavy. Why not leave those alone for a while and stick to a light LI (just a pea size can make a diff.) and your HESMU? If your hair is craving moisture you should use a LI. Have you ever tried Mousse?

ETA: How about whipping up some homemade FSG? It's cheap and super easy to make.

I can't believe I missed this last night but if you didn't do a DT after the emergencee you need to do it. YOu have to follow a protein treatment with a conditioning treatment. Even if it's just regular conditioner - slap some on and leave it in there for a while.

Hey Lauren! Just wanted to tell you that the last week or so, my hair flipped out. The drop in temperature almost immediately effected it and made it weird. Its just now getting kinda normal, and I had to switch to a whole different routine. I really didn't expect it, so I don't think it was me being mental lol, but just so you know, the weather can freak out your hair!

If you want a cheap DT that won't break the bank, you have to go to Sally's and get the Lustrasilk Shea & Mango. If you need to know where the closest sally's is, just PM me! Maybe we can go together lol. Actually, if you're really that desperate, I have a spare tub that I got on sale that you're welcome to have. It was 2 bucks heh.

I also started DT'ing with the Ganier Triple Nutrition. Something about that really softens up my hair, but I have to leave it on for like 15 mins before it works.

Thank you IamDonna unfortunately I'm out of KBB and can't afford to buy more atm.

Thank you everyone who suggested to take a break from the Jessicurl I definitely will, and I'll also take the DM out of my routine for the time being and see how that goes.

I'm going to try the Lustrasilk since it's only a couple bucks that I can manage. So thank you for those of you that suggested this.

Tinah I did do a condish after protein treatment, but I think I need something more moisturizing like you suggested a DT so I'll use the lustrasilk first thing.

Del2C I would love to make my own fsg I just gotta get a strainer with smaller holes to be able to make this, because I already have flax in my pantry. Any suggestions to add to it other than the flax?

Thank you SO MUCH everyone for responding to my cry for help it was so encouraging to see so many people take the time to respond! :)

lauren, I have been reading through this post and just thought I would bring up something else that could be causing the problem. If you recently had a baby your body is probably very low on vitamins as well as hormonal changes occuring. I went through this with both of my boys for a good 6-10 months after having them. My hair was actually 2a to straight in some spots. Now I have 3b/3c hair (my youngest is 5). I just wanted to let you know that it may have nothing to do with the products you're putting on your hair but the changes going on in your body. You mentioned post partom hair loss which is what made me think about it. Give yourself a break from fretting over your hair and just enjoy being a new mom. Your hair will bounce back soon.

3b/c mix; mixture of fine, med. and coarse texture with med-high porosity

Current HG routine: Tresemme Naturals conditioner; AG Fast Food LI; AG Recoil; CJ CIAB = no crunch, lots of body and awesome definition

The Lustrasilk Shea Mango is heavenly...it isn't impressive while in the jar or on your hair, but you won't believe how incredibly soft your hair will get after a DT with it! Be sure to get most of the water out of your hair after a COwash (or -poo, whatever you're doing), and consider adding some heat to help it absorb? Maybe? It helps me to do that anyway.

My strainer for FSG was the cheapy metal one from Wal-Mart, it's got one handle on one side and a bowl rest on the other side. It's similar to this one: /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.walmart.com%2Fcatalog%2Fproduct.do%3Fproduct_id%3D11926771" class="Popup, but a bit bigger/deeper and I think mine was under $5.00. I use the lighter brown seeds and have no problems straining.

    Video for FSG
    HUGE thread on making FSG

    A good basic recipe

    1/4 C Flax
    2C Distilled Water
    1/2 t Honey/Agave Nectar
    2T FOTE

I've seen a video for a gal that uses Aloe Juice instead of water but I've never tried myself.

crazycurls makes a good point too but I know how hard it is to not obsess about our hair.

Yeah your body goes through a lot while pregnant (and after) I did a search and I found this site with some people asking questions /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fparents.berkeley.edu%2Fadvice%2Fpregnancy%2Fhairloss.html%23diff" class="Popup.

You just have to give it time. I met a woman once that said when she was pregnant her previously straight hair went completely curly. After I think a year she still wasn't completely back to her original hair.

I think somebody mentioned vitamins... Be sure to eat right. Even your diet contributes to your hair.

Just enjoy your baby and your hair will get better with time. (I am sure stressing over it doesn't help either! Stress is never good for the body or mind.)

Update on lustrasilk: I know you were all rooting for it to work, but no bueno. I even left it on for like 30+ minutes and my hair just isn't absorbing ANYTHING I put on it. It is still as I originally described it feels like an old wig on my head :-( I will try heat next time with it to see if that helps.

crazycurlz I hope you're right and it is just post partum related. I have two children now, and with my first one I just had significant hair loss, but that was it. I know that doesn't rule it out so I do hope that is the case, because then I can just relax and wait this out. As far as my diet I eat very healthy the majority of the time. I eat a lot of protein and fruits and vegetables so I can't imagine that is a factor.

Del thank you for the links I'm going to check them out when/if my kids go to bed tonight ;)

Thank you everyone who gave additional advice I'm going to get one of the strainers as suggested :) so I can try making my own fsg.

I have two screaming babies aaahhhhh. Thank you everyone will keep you posted on how my hair is doing.
