For me, it makes my hair very soft and adds moisture, but I couldn't use it as a gel because it has no hold.

I've been using Trader Joe's 99% Aloe Vera Gel. I think it's the same thing that's used for sunburns, but I'm not sure what other extra ingredients the drug store brands have in them. HTH :D

The way to make it have more hold is by adding a 3-4 drops of honey per about 2 tbsp. of gel; if you diffuse dry, at least partially, it really "activates" the honey. This worked great for me in the FL heat/humidity a couple of years ago but then I had problems finding the Fruit of The Earth brand I'd been using so I stopped, now I have some more and I'm going to try it again.

See, now why didn't I think of the honey??

I like that idea! I haven't a clue how to diffuse, but I'm sure it'd work while I air-dry! Thanks!

Jessicurl provides a wonderful service in her website via demo videos and there's one that shows how to diffuse here: http://www.jessicurl.com/Demo-Videos-p-6.html

Well, you asked me about the TooShea! the other day, and then I sent the link to the site. I was just wondering how the visit went.

Hi everyone. I read in CG that we must use the aloe vera gel that is meant to ingest. I bought a Walgreens brand sunburn type anyways for 99 cents but what is the difference between the 2 aloe vera gels? I want to add some to a spray bottle but want to make sure to use the right kind, any suggestions??

The edible one has no additional ingredients, it must be kept in the fridge and it only lasts a short time. The other ones have thickeners and preservatives. I do like the brand Fruit Of The Earth though, notwithstanding the above, mixed with a tiny bit of honey (or I hear with agave nectar) it gives a decent hold while moisturizing the hair.

The other day I was "lurking" at the Long Hair Community and I read a recipe for a DT that calls for CO, AVG, oil & honey (I think). I'll try to find it and post the recipe separately.

I see that you are all talking about Aloe Vera Gel but now I have a another take on the Aloe Vera Question. What about 100% Aloe Vera & using it on the hair directly? I have an over abundance of Aloe Vera growing & I always use it when we need it for cuts, scrapes, or burns. I just split the Aloe Leaf and gently scrape out the "meat" & gel out of it.

I was thinking of using this on my wild & crazy curls to start getting them back into condition again. I'm still trying to figure out the "type" I have & right now I'm going with a 3b. Thanks for the help for a newbie to naturallycurly.com!

Coming fresh from the plant it's an excellent conditioner! I think it was my aunt's maid who swore she temporarily "relaxed" her kinky hair by leaving the gel on like 2 full days (hair covered by a scarf), then she washed her hair and did a roller set and her her hair was "like silk". I find that unless I put honey in my FOTEAVG it leaves my hair wavy instead of curly so there's something to that, I would imagine the effect of the real thing is probably more intense.

It's also great as a skin "mask", I knew a girl who would put the inside pieces of the leaf in a blender and apply that to her face and it helped with her acne. I've also heard that applied on healing wounds it minimizes or completely eliminates scarring and I really believe it because of the plants internal healing properties for stomach problems, and long ago when I had a live plant, I once spilled HOT oil from a frying pan in my hand but ran and broke a leaf and put the gel on and not only it took the horrible pain away but soon even the redness that was left disappeared. I forgot about it completely until about a week later the skin where I got burned began to lift off and when I pulled it off I had perfectly healthy skin underneath. Another time I was not so lucky, spilled something hot on my foot and only had processed aloe gel and I still have the scar. You are very lucky to have so much of it at hand!

You're not talking about the pure gel from the plant are you? I've never used that one on my hair but I have used Fruit of The Earth (FOTE) 100% and it just leaves my hair soft (absolutely NO crunch) and the curl rather undefined and relaxed, it doesn't do much for my hair unless I mix it with a few drops of honey and diffuse.

I was checking out what ingrediants fruit of earth contains and i found this site with good info.
    http://www.mauritasaloevera.com/Aloe-Hair.htm

site qoutes ''Aloe vera heals the scalp from inside and balances the pH of the scalp and is also beneficial for cleaning of the pores. Aloe vera gel with coconut milk mixed with the small amount of wheat germ oil and is used as a shampoo and provides excellent results to many people.''

i want to try this because i`m not using shampoo anymore.

I've seen Fruit of the Earth Aloe Gel at Walgreen's, Rite Aid in the suntan lotion section. I picked up a sample size for 99 cents but haven't had a chance to use it yet.
Just make sure to read the ingredients because some of these Aloe Gels may contain alcohol or menthol in them since they're meant to provide "cooling" relief from sunburns.
