I have waist length hair...if I was a mermaid

MysticSpiralMysticSpiral Registered Users Posts: 1,024
Ugh! A shrinkage vent. I realize today, as I was DTing that my hair, while in the shower, fell to waist length waves. When it's dry however the end thumps dead center on my bra strap.

Anyone else hating their shrinkage?

    yes!!

I would love my hair, curly, to be bra length! It is past my shoulders while wet or the rare occasion I straighten it. However when it is dry....above the shoulders!! :( GROW!!!

Yes! Shrinkage angers me as well. I actually think that since going CG my hair has gotten a bit curlier now (more 3c than 3b) and has even more shrinkage than it did when it was smothered in cones. :angry7:

3b/c mix; mixture of fine, med. and coarse texture with med-high porosity

Current HG routine: Tresemme Naturals conditioner; AG Fast Food LI; AG Recoil; CJ CIAB = no crunch, lots of body and awesome definition

I'm afraid that when I do grow my hair to waist length (dry) that in the shower it'll hit the floor, I'll step on it, and experience a humiliating trip to the emergency room :laughing6:

Shrinkage is no joke. My coworkers had only seen my hair curly, so when I finally flat ironed after 6 month and they saw that it was waist length, they were like, where'd THAT come from??
    My hair is:

    - 3b/3c/probably some 4a up in there too.
    - natural since birth
    - almost hip length when flat ironed, BSL when curly.
    - a great lover of water. lol

Nope.. it's just part of the deal with curly hair. :glasses9: Is it frustrating? I guess it can be, but at least you know the potential length of your hair. Maybe try stretching it out to show more of the length.

Shrinkage drives me insane! and right now my hair is doing something weird where half of my hair is a definite 3b and the top half is a very much 3c. So when it dries all of it shrinks from bsl to my shoulders. but it doesn't shrink evenly. So with the curliest sections, it will look like I have this random chunk of curly hair sticking out of the back of my head.

I think this is actually because of how my hair decides to growth. It's as though, when the hair growth starts, its trying to make these uber-perfect tiny spirals and then the hair just gets lazy and the curls get looser and looser the longer it gets (dramatically so...think very tight 3c hair to very loose 3b or possibly even 3a). Sense the top of my hair is shorter It hasn't grown much of the looser curls yet.

I remember when I'd do this. the first time I came to work with it, people didn't even recognize me my hair was so long and different. My one boss came up to me and discreetly asked if that was actually my hair. He didn't fully believe me until I came to work with curly hair again and showed him.

Waist length??? That is amazing, shrinkage or not. If its already that long (unless you've been growing it all your life- which...maybe u have lol) then u will get there in no time. I haven't cut my hair in 15 mths and its not even BSL stretched or straightened. How often do u cut your hair? I would love to see pics (hint hint ;)

I don't get too upset about shrinkage anymore. I guess I got used to it? I do pineapple though. That has helped more than any product or anything else I've tried. My hair almost hits my shoulders dry. Without pineappling, it would be near my chin.

You're right, hate is a bit of a strong word. I do love my hair and all its curly quirks, but still, watching it shrink inch by inch as it looses water :crybaby:

It was elbow length in the summer (my hair feeds off humidity), but I'm still trying to figure out my winter mixes, and until there, it's chilling on my brastrap. I'll try the pineapple though

I have to like shrinkage because without it, I wouldn't have curly hair.

But, seeing my hair go from past my hip wet to bottom of my bra strap dry does make growing out frustrating sometimes.

So, I realized that shrinkage is not fun for everyone and I have three solutions that rock my world.

    1) MOISTURIZE!!!! Sometimes hair hides away when its too dry. Deeply moisturize by heating a cup of olive oil for 30 seconds in the microwave, applying to dry hair, then wrapping in a shower cap and on top of that, a warm towel (Just put the towel in the dryer to heat). Rinse and experience awesomeness. B-)

    2) [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]Kinky-curly curling custard[/buylink]. $16 at whole foods but WORTH THE MONEY!!! Its so amazing, organic and smells sooo good. Follow the directions about how to apply, and it'll hang like its wet. (www.kinky-curly.com)

    3) Put some heavy clips on the ends of your curls while they're drying. They'll hang down more. :)

    Good Luck!!!

Yeah, I think any clip will do, as long as they're heavy enough to pull down your curls without causing pain or straightening them out. [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] has the potential to make hair the way it is when wet, but you need to use a lot. And that causes hard hair. So I only use enough to hold my basic shape but if hardness doesn't bother you, go right ahead! :)

I remember when I had my hair down to the middle of my back (about 5 years ago) and I got so sick of it I cut it all off - pixie style. I'd be scared to be that length again, SO much hair to deal with!!

I'm growing mine out now, it is shoulder length wet and ear length dry  boo! I'd be happier with the shrinkage if it were longer though.

Shrinkage can be a pain ladies, but its part of the uniqueness of curly hair. I'm almost BSL wet and SL dry. I'm yearning for longer hair, but I have so much of it I know I probably won't be able to handle beautiful lengths like mid back and WL while curly. If my hair were that long curly that means it would be like tailbone wet....tooo much hair!

I've decided that growing out and making your hair healthy doesn't mesh together well. The healthier my hair gets, the silker, sproingier and tighter it gets--as in my curls are now edging out of the 3c zone and into 4a. I'm estatic that my hair is getting healthy, but I keep looking at the shortening length, and well, get a little sad. So I've decided to stop wearing my hair down in braids and twists and just stick with buns until I'm at the length I want, so I'll stop messing with my hair. :geek:

Had to revive this one because my shrinkage almost made me cry today. While in the shower my hair was a bit past BSL.

Apply products, plop, and voila SL! Argh! It gets better though
The more it grows, the curlier it gets, so its a bit counterproductive because the longer my hair, the shorter it looks
    AND
It shrinks unevenly! I look like my 3yr old niece cut my hair! Different lengths everywhere!

Sometimes I do the moisturizing treatment like you posted but my friend taught me to put a twist on it. I heat up the olive oil and mix it with a generous amount of my best conditioner. Make sure my hair is saturated with the mixture. Cover with a plastic bag. Then cover with a bonnet blow-dryer or something that will add continuous and even heat. I was using a heating pad at one point; pinning it to cover my hair (with the cloth cover on of course!). A personal/portable bonnet dryer is ideal for the best results. Leave the heat on (as high as you can tolerate) for up to 45 minutes. Rinse it out thoroughly and style as usual. Voila! Extra soft hair! It turns out very well if you are using a flat-iron. No more heated metal in my hair, personally.

One question though. Okay, I am gradually growing out the relaxed ends and trimming every few weeks ... Has anyone else who's used relaxers for a LONG time noticed a change in your hair texture? My hair used to feel so much softer when I was a kid and wore it curly! Now it feels like straw! :'(
