Are my ends supposed to be rough and dry???

NeldaNelda Posts: 84Registered Users
Ive been natural for about 12mos..I have not gotten my ends clipped since. When my hair is picked out..the ends are feel very dry and rough. But then when wet my hair feels fine and drys ok. But then I'll have these stray ends coming out... Is my hair supposed to be rough and dry since its nappy..Or do I just need them clipped???
I have been natural for about 3yrs now. Recently cut all of it off in April/07, I know some may think I am crazy...but for those who don't me I am a girl of variety..I NEED CHANGE!

Well not really...if I want to wear an afro then I'll just braid it out every other night...if I just wear it curly then I condish-wash every morn...But ill notice the dry ends when I do braid outs. I use hair milk from carols daughter and her hair butter. When I condish-wash I freemans. I stopped with VO5 b/c it made my hair look really dull and vegetable glycerin doesnt really do nothing for my hair. Anyway I havent clipped my ends in about 12mos since I chopped it off. I just posted some pics. CLick on my profile and u will see them..The last of the pics shows what myhair looks like now...thanx mariposa

Definitely not, that's a common misconception; a lot of people's supernappy hair is extremely soft. If the diameter of your strands is large, then your hair will most likely feel less smooth than people with finer hair, but that is true among all the hair types.

I think your roughness problem is definitely due to those old ends. You could try experimenting with other products, if you aren't satisfied w/those you're using now, but I'd try a good trim first. HTH :)

i think maybe you just need a good trim. 12 months is a long time to go without trimming your ends.

i was having that problem earlier this month and got my hair trimmed
the ends would be a bit tangly and scraggly when i was trying to do twists

i'm not one for getting hair trimmed all the time..... guess it depends what you're doing with it....... BUT it hadn't been cut since last summer...... and before that....... not in years...... not since i used to wear it short

i had looked into it before.... since i started growing it back out but was told that my ends were healthy

Well Ok...I feel kinda bad now b/c I kinda got frustrated and took things into my own hands. I braided my hair last night and then just cut the tips. The ends feel a tad better..but now Im worried about the shape of my hair now. I think i might just make an appointment at Deva to get it shaped up..depending on how it looks by december.

hmmm seems to me that trimming while it's braided might cut it unevenly..... but if you're happy with it then why not?

when mine was trimmed she took it in little clumps and trimmed the edges there

anyhow does your hair feel better? hope so :P

Well it seems to look good so far..I guess id really get a clear idea once I do another braid out. But I gave my hair a protein treatment yesterday with Penetratt and I deep conditoned also. So its feels really good now. I just bought the Trader Joes Nourish Spa Condish and Shampoo. I was wondering if u tried either b4??

    Hi Nelda

No I haven't tried either of those. I haven't done a protein treatment either although following motown girl's website I had bought an aphoghee packet ages ago and have been planning to use it on my hair (especially the front) for now....
i do deep condition a lot with egg yolk mixtures (eg yolk, honey, olive/coconout oil) and heat..... works great..... especially if i can leave it on a LONG time

Well, I'm going to go against the grain here and say, it's perfectly normal for your ends to feel that way when your hair is picked out. When it's wet, you're feeling the length of the strands because the hair is being weighed down by the water. When picked out, you're mainly feeling the ends of the strands. With my hair, it doesn't matter if my hair is freshly trimmed and buttered up; the ends will still feel that way.

I think of it like a broom: if you run your hands down the length of the bristles, it feels smooth. If you run your hand across the bottom of the broom, you just feel the ends of the bristles.

I agree, it could be just the style. But it your ends feel the same no matter what the style, try a deep conditioner possibly.
Wiry?, baby fine strands densely packed with different textures and curl diameters seemingly on each individual strand.
