wolves, coyotees and grizzly bears

zmanzzzzzmanzzzz BannedPosts: 3,826Banned Users
are everywhere around me.

i am currently staying with some friends on a farm in the montana blackfoot indian reservation just south of glacier park and flathead lake. the notorious mission mountains are looming to the east.

every night around 8-9 pm two distinct packs of coyotees descent fron the wilderness to forrage in the valleys. they give there yelping pack calls as they leave tree line. all the dogs in the vicinity go crazy but cant do anything.

grizzly bears, in pre hibernation mode, come down in the evenings to feed of wild apple trees. i was sleeping on the porch last week and one came into the yard. luckally the dogs chased him off.

and, of course, wolves on the recent population rebound, inhabit the area as well.

is anyone scared for me?

Ever since the sports thread wars I have sensed a special connection between [edit] & Wile. Like the connection oil has to water. I almost can't speak of it. Wait....my eyes are misting. ~asq

    Lucky!

Living in the UK where the most interesting thing I see is an urban fox, a squirrel or a hedgehog in my garden, this strikes me as really exciting! So while I'm a bit scared for you, I'm also very jealous!

zman, that is so cool. I heard wolves howling in Alaska and saw one high on a ridge. Sounds like a magical place to spend some time. Enjoy!

Nope, not scared for you -- jealous.

As a former Westerner, here's my advice for you:

The wolves and coyotes will not bother you. The coyotes will be happy to eat any dogs, cats, or other pets you have, so be warned. Wolves are actually pretty shy and will likely steer clear of your whole operation unless you have little livestock they might like.

The bears? Steer clear, don't leave food or birdseed etc. in your yard, on the porch. If you go out at night, turn on yard lights and make a LOT of noise before you go outside. Better yet, stay indoors! Don't fight them for the apples. If it's been a lean year for bears, I would also consider strong shutters for my windows and a sturdy door.

Don't visit the buffalo. They can stample you pretty good and will be more than eager to do so. You're probably in the most danger from them but at least they won't come up on your porch to see you.

ditto that!!!! We have bears and coyotes here but rarely see them. And we certainly don't have those mountains!

And I'd also LOVE to see a hedgehog in my yard!!!! Really!

Ditto. I'd definitely be camped out someplace (in a car with the doors locked probably), so that I could get some good photos of the animals.

Are you near Polson? My SIL and her kids live there. My MIL and her husband used to have house on Flathead Lake. They sold it to move to Las Vegas.
