How can you tell if your hair needs or would respond to protein?

I have fine and soft 3a curls and I see people talk about protein here. How do I know if I need it and what would it do for my hair? i don't have alot of damage as my hair is cut in a bob.

Are you happy with how your hair looks and feels? My hair feels kind of "mushy" and doesn't look healthy when it needs protein. The curls perk up after protein. Your hair sounds like it is in good condition - I'm not sure you need extra protein. I need it because I color my hair. HTH.

    Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

I do a stretch test and act on it. It's always right!
2c? 3a? Mostly coarse, but LOVIN' the proteins and fighting overconditioning! My hair is just plain weird :glasses1:

    LowPOO; Creme of Nature shampoo
    CO; L'Oreal Nutrigloss & AOGBP
Other; nettle tea once a week instead of CO, JCRR, JCAS
Stylers; KCCC, L'oreal studio line gel
    Don't like; PVP, non-vegetable glycerine

In essence, finer hair is more likely to need protein than coarser hair, which has a lot of protein in its structure already. The stretch test is also useful and more individual - when your hair is wet, pull out a few strands and see how much they can stretch. If they stretch a lot, you need more protein. If they snap easily, you need more moisture. However, that's not a super scientific way of doing it because technically that's undue stress...I suggest reading that article.

My hair is color treated and fine. It's in good condition but sometimes feels almost too soft and I would like more curl definition.

Jackie, why don't you just try one and see? You'll never really know unless you try it. If your hair feels rough or dry after, do a moisturizing protein-free DT (a lot of people have to do this anyway, even after doing a protein DT they needed).

I like Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner. I just slather it on, put on a plastic cap and rinse it out some hours later (overnight is convenient too). Or you could just do a half hour and gauge your hair then. I tend to go big or go home, : )

If your hair is colour treated using protein will help to "plug" the holes created by chemically altering your hair. And if it's fine and too soft, you definitely need more protein! I'd try Nexxus Emergencee or Joico K-Pak (or the GVP version).
