Newbie here in need of some serious product help before going CG

Hi everyone!
This is my first post... I've been trying to search the forums but I have so many questions and things to search for that I'm having a hard time finding what I need. I was hoping I could get some direct help...

I'm about ready to try this CG method but I need to obviously buy some products first... preferably not too expensive ones that I can buy at Ulta or Target. I think I'm all set for a co-wash (VO5 or Suave) and a conditioner (that L'oreal one for curly hair everyone is talking about)... but then what?

I've found that conditioners weigh my hair down and so I have used Infusium 23 Leave in Treatment for years but I see it has cones and so I'll need something else (or maybe nothing?)... I"m absolutely terrified to stop using this... I've become totally dependant on it.

I've been using TreSemme curl cream, Pantene Mousse and spray gel and need some cone free replacements. I've found in the past that gels (and some mousses) leave my hair really crunchy and then I get these crazy curls that stick straight up and out... also when it air drys same thing plus its sooooo flat so I always diffuse it.

Soooo any suggestions on what I can try... a curl cream and gel/mousse that won't leave my hair crunchy but will define my curls and reduce frizz (i feel like i'm asking for a miracle!). I've also been told I need to do a deep conditioning treatment once a week or so... any suggestionst there?

Thanks in advance for all your help! I think I have 3a/3b fine hair with avg/high porosity. :hello2:

Welcome! Sounds like you've done your homework!

One of the best things to do when you start CG is to stick with a very basic routine - so co-wash, rinse-out, styling product. That's pretty much it, though you can use your co-wash conditioner as a leave-in if you feel you need it (which you may not, since you have fine hair). I honestly wouldn't DT unless your hair is super dry.

I have coarse hair, but from what I understand, fine hair does get weighed down more easily and thus does well with protein. So you want to look for products that have protein in them. Suave Naturals Coconut and V05 moisture milks all have protein in them. Porous hair also does well with protein, so you've lucked out! The old version of the L'oreal conditioner had protein, not sure if the new one does. Either way, you should be ok.

Gel is pretty crucial for me. Crunch is actually good. It holds the hair in place while drying, and should be easily scrunched out when dry. I used to have the same problem as you, but I have used gel for over a year now with no crunch problem. If you still want to try a mousse, Herbal Essences Totally Twisted and Joico(available at Ulta, I believe) mousses are both CG-approved.

I know it's scary to let go of the products you've been using, but your hair will thank you! In the beginning it may not be the prettiest your hair has ever been (depending on how long your transition period is, or if you even have one), but it does get better! Good luck!

Thanks for the pointers! It has taken me years to get my hair somewhat undercontrol so I'm definitely scared to change at this point especially being I just got a haircut that just DOES NOT WORK and so now I'm completely self consious about my hair and I fight w/ it EVERY morning. But I will take the plunge here soon to see what it does for me... and keep growing my hair! (know of anything that helps your hair grow faster???)

And also what is this [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] I see in a lot of people's signature... can I only get it at Curlmart?

Oh, I can completely relate! When you find something that sort of works, it's scary to move on. I'm still too scared to go to a new stylist who is supposedly really good with curls, so I stick with my old one who is just ok. One day I'll make the change, it just may take a long time!

I think some people have had good luck with taking Biotin supplements for hair growth, but I'm not totally sure. You may be able to find a thread about it if you search.

It's one of my favorites. It has a little bit of a learning curve, but just about every hair type and texture can use it with great results. Consequently, there are probably a thousand threads here about it. You can find it at a few places online, including their website and at some Whole Foods stores. I've bought from Curlmart and Ricky's website when they had a sale. The price has gone up, but if you want to try a sample, PM kathymack (I think she sells samples of this). I can find you some links.
