That's not a real word!

destinych3destinych3 Posts: 291Registered Users
Maybe it's just me, but i can't help but correct people when they use words that are not real. It bugs me. I blame my mother and high school English teacher.

"Conversate", hands down, is the one that bugs me the most. Whether it's in real life or online, I simply want to scream.

An honorable mention goes to "spunt" as in "I went to the store and spunt my whole check." WTH people?

Any non-words out there that either tickle you or irritate you?

    It bothers me as well. I also loathe when people add extra syllables.

    Yes! But I can't think of any off the top of my head.

    Another pet peeve is when people use the word 'pacifically' instead of 'specifically' or when people fail to conjugate...I'm getting annoyed just thinking about it!

    How about "for all intensive purposes"? That one kills me.

    Aha!

    I work in the 'professorial unit' in a hospital. We hired a new girl recently and when she answers the phone she says 'professory unit, this is...'

    It makes me twitch.

    Yup. It's in the dictionary now BUT I DON'T CARE.

    My co-worker keeps using supposably. I have corrected him multiple times but he brushes it off. The other day he said it at a meeting and my boss' eyes nearly popped out of his head.

    Okay, I just thought of some.

    I live in Washington, DC and it seems like any word that has a vowel and the letter R has to be pronounced like er, as in stir.

    Here are some examples;

    Curl=Carol (a proper name, or a Christmas song)

    curry out=carry out (fast food joint)

    Kern=Karen

    Serterday=Saturday

    errybody=everbody

    erryday=everyday

    errythang=everything

    That's all that I can think of. I think I hear this stuff on a daily basis during my commute. Ah, what fun and refreshing accents are these.

    I'll be back if I can think of more. Ta!

    I want to say that IME, these are more culture-specific, like: Shurrl = Cheryl. Scurred = scared

    My son is driving me, the grammar nerd, nuts using the word "scurred."

    in keeping with the southern trend, i lived in nc for a long time and used to hear "worser" on a fairly regular basis from a pretty redneck co-worker. as in, "this one is worser than that one." i gave up trying to correct after i realized the futility, lol.
