I'm making red velvet cake today. What kind of topping/frosting would go with the cake? I'm thinking a buttercream frosting? What do you guys think?

I have only ever had cream cheese icing on it and that was pretty awesome.

I think cream cheese frosting is the norm, but I think you should try it with buttercream frosting it will still taste great!

I've had it with both BC and CC, both very delicious.

Cream cheese is most known, but it's not the true traditional frosting for a red velvet cake. A cooked/boiled frosting is:

It's a southern cake and you find a lot of southern recipes make use of roux in some form.
Cream cheese has become the go-to, but this is the original.
It's up to you as far as what you prefer (I honestly don't care for this cake).

The boiled frosting looks good!! Thanks.

I've always made it with cream cheese frosting, but I guess any white frosting would be okay.

Cream cheese is the best frosting for this cake.

High five! Even a great red velvet cake is a mediocre cake to me. Assuming I cared for frosting, I'd rather eat carrot cake as a vehicle for cream cheese frosting. I am all about actual cake though, and something like devil's food or pound cake is much more appealing to my tastes. I wish this cake weren't so popular. All about aesthetics.

Just to bump this up: i highly suggest the recipe below. I made it last Thursday & brought it to our office pot luck & it was beyond delicious. Im a foody & I love to cook & bake , so I tried this recipe. is was quick & easy. pretty much fool proof. the only things I changed were adding an extra tsp of cocoa powder & putting a water bath in the oven so the cakes would be guaranteed to be moist. i made cream cheese icing & it was an office hit. I normally bring the pumpkin buttery gooey cakes, but I wanted to try something different this rip.

I used to make that recipe all the time. I and hubs love it. But I made it once for a church group and no one liked it. Weird.

I never liked red velvet cake. Something about the idea of eating so much food coloring at once turns me off (and it's hard to turn me off of cake).
