NYC/NJ Salon for Coloring Hair

glossnglamglossnglam Registered Users Posts: 23
Hi curlies! I highlighted my hair months ago at a cheap salon (the type where they break to eat and leave you waiting with dripping wet hair. mmmm hmmmm.). I left (after a second visit to fix their work) with uneven/bleeding, over colored hair that I had to learn to work with.:angry4:

I'm now in need of a touch up and color correction since my caramel highlights have faded to blond. I'll probably also need to add low lights, so it'll actually look like highlights. Siiiiiigh.

Does anyone know of a great salon in the NYC/NJ area that knows how to color??? Aveda? Hair Rules? Miss Jessies?? Am I asking for too much??:sad5:

I can definitely provide some options for getting your hair colored the correct way in NYC.

BUT my opinion may be a bit biased. I work at Insitu salon in Gramercy park as a color specialist.

Having said that I am happy to recommend a few other salons that I am confident can get the job done for you!

    1) Devachan- They are widely known for working with curly haired clients. May be a bit pricey
    2) Scott J salon- Upper east side just starting to get noticed for their great work with curly hair.

As we know curly hair has a mind of its own and when it comes to a cut and color it can go terribly bad when your put in the hands of a stylist that doesn't know the in's and out's. Each salon generally has someone who specializes in curly hair so make sure you call and ask who that person is.

Props to you for going back and trying to have them fix it but I'm sorry it didn't seem to work out for you. It doesn't sound like there was a communication error it just sounds like maybe they had no clue how to work with your hair texture. Fading highlights makes it sound like they had to lift your highlights using bleach which I would never recommend for curly hair!!!! When you get your touch-ups make sure to lift the highlights with color instead of bleach (less drying since curly hair is already lacking moisture). Also it sounds like you've done a lot to your hair in the past few weeks. So before you try coloring it again make sure to talk it through with your potential stylist.

And of course, here's my biased opinion of the best NY curly hair salon:

    (3) Insitu salon- Paula Casano (Curly hair Owner) is amazing with cutting curly hair and has passed all of her lessons on to all the stylists.

Good luck!!! Let us know how it goes!!!!

Thank you!! I'm leaning towards Deva now ... though I'm not big on their products, but I guess I can bare with it as long as my highlights are done well.

I stumbled upon some reviews on this site about the Mario Diab salon. Have you heard anything about this place?? It sounds good. I think I'll add it to my short list.

I'm still researching, but any additional recommendations are appreciated! This is especially if they can handle curly 3c/4a hair. Thank you!!:p

never had my hair colored anywhere in nyc, and am no longer coloring, but i get my hair cut by carlos at mario diab salon (he was formerly at devachan til aug 2007) and a friend of mine who has straight hair gets her hair cut by mario and we both LOVE our haircuts. she travels 2 hours to get to the city, i travel an hour (without traffic, so it often times more) and we both think it is well worth it and would not go anywhere else.
if you read the reviews on james he gets great reviews. i believe carlos also does highlighting.
let us know what you do. good luck!

Words cannot describe how wonderful Kathleen and her staff are!!!! The cut is amazing and the products are fantastic!!!!! I still cannot believe how beautiful my hair is!! The curls are perfect! I put my hair to the ultimate challenge. I played soccer in 90 deg. heat and humidity and then slept on it and not one spot of frizz!!!!! Amazing!!!! I am bi racial and have struggled my entire life with my hair. I have subjected it to perms, relaxers, blow driers and flat irons to get nothing but damaged frizzy hair in the end well no more!! This is worth every penny!!!! Do not hesitate to give it a try!!!! Thank you so much 91 South!!!!!
