Hair today, gone tomorrow.

Tyra Banks is ditching her trademark weaves for the season 5 premiere of her CW talk show, airing Sept. 8. She will reveal her "natural hair."This season on The Tyra Show we're taking it to the next level and getting more real than ever before by encouraging women everywhere to own and rock what they've got and be proud!" she says in a press released.

"For the season 5 premiere, I will be doing just that - no fake hair, I'm rocking my REAL hair. This will all be going down on September 8, 2009, which we're declaring National Real Hair Day! We welcome everyone to go natural with me!"
Okay so that's the article.. now I am curious if this means she doesn't have a relaxer or does she simply mean she won't be doing wigs or weaves.

Because "going natural" means one thing to some and another to others.

Personally, I don't have any issue with people getting relaxers or straightening their hair. I think it's a personal choice. I do not relax or straighten anymore it because I prefer my curls and my hair seems to stay healthier in it's natural state. And it doesn't hurt that my husband ALWAYS wants my hair curly.. LOL!

I will tune in because I am curious to see what her hair will look like. I did see her real hair some years ago. It was shoulder length and pretty healthy actually. It was cut into a nice straight barely curved at the ends angular bob that just grazed her shoulders in the front. The color looked like her natural color from when she was little..the honey brown/blonde. It was actually a really nice look on her and I thought she would wear it like that for a while but she went back to her wigs soon after.

So I definitely want to see it because I bet it has a lot of length since she's been wearing those wigs and weaves for so long..unless of course she has it cut it into some style before she debuts it.

Only thing I hope is she doesn't dye it that hideous red color she does sometimes with the lace front wigs and weaves. For some reason, I absolutely loathe her with that auburn/reddish hair.. UGH!

So I am routing for light brown with the honey highlights. I think that looks awesome on her. Plus it's really not that far off from her childhood hair color if anyone has ever seen pics of her when she was a kid. I have her book about makeup that she put out many years ago and she has pics of her as a little girl and her hair was so cute..little fuzzy adorable curls.

I wonder will she still be "rocking her natural hair" on ANTM this season. I may start back watching it just to see her natural hair since I can't watch her talk show because I'm at work.

Sounds like she means the hair that is growing from her scalp, maybe not in it's natural state. It's a start, though, maybe she will talk some of her celeb freinds to get rid of their lace front wigs too. uhuhuhhmmm(clears throat)Beyonce.

Pretty sure the honey blonde is not her natural color. I found this old photo of her from before she was famous but it looks like she has blow waved out some of the curl:

    Boy was she ever skinny!

Not sure I like the hair, but it does look like a typical 70s/80s hair style.

Yeah, I've seen this photo before. Tyra's hair is actually dyed in that photo darker than her natural color. She tells this story in her book that I own.

Her best friend in high school had this gorgeous jet black hair. So Tyra gets this grand idea that she would sneak to the salon and get her hair dyed jet black. She wore a hat at home and all though dinner. Her mother didn't say a word...let Tyra go to bed and all and didn't say a thing.. LOL!

Next day, Tyra's mom comes in the room.. leans in close and yells, "HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND!!!!"

In Tyra's book she has pictures of when she was as young as 3 years old..and her hair is very light golden brown. I call that "black people's honey blonde" I think some people call it sandy brown... so she DOES have very light hair.. that high school pic is the black dye job she sneaked and got behind her mom's back.

I used to be nuts about Tyra Banks when I was much younger..so I got her book and that's how I know all that stuff.

I'm glad that tyra is removing the weave from her life and hopefully for ever but i do understand if her life becomes to busy to deal with her natural or permed hair. Go tyra!:wav:

Think of it like this, your mixing dirty clothes with clean clothes, you can use all the perfum you want (hair product) but the dirty clothes (permed hair) will never be clean, will eventually get old, raggedy, and eventually start shredding/breaking(natural&permed hair). Don't waste your time. Transitioning for most is a :boxing: fight that relaxed hair will win!

BTW, if anyone wants to see tons of pictures of when Tyra was a little girl.. all you have to do is go to www.tyrabanks.com click on BIO then click on TYRA'S STORY.

Tons of photos from her birth all the way up to 2004 will able to be seen. I couldn't post the photos here because her site won't let you do that...

WOW! I always assumed her hair was naturally dark because I've seen so many photos from her early modeling days where her hair is black. But I checked out those photos you suggested and you are totally right!

Does that mean that she will go back to wigs and weaves after the first episode? :confused1:

And hasn't she done this once or twice before? On the episode she did about relaxing she didn't have a weave.

Yup, Tyra has naturally light hair! I actually LOVE her natural color on her so I hope if she really is going natural she gets her hair dyed back similar to her natural hair color because it really does look pretty on her.

But I think she is going back to those wigs and weaves eventually (which doesn't bother me..cause how she wears her hair is up to her). And yep.. she did wear her hair not in a weave before on her show.. but when I saw it was with braids and she still had fake hair making the braids..it wasn't all her hair.

So it will be interesting to see how "natural" she will be... I mean she could just mean she's taking off the wig so we can see and then going back to her normal wig and weave styles.

Amen to that. I honestly do not have anything against weave or wigs as a way to change up your look. But dag, every day. Do they even know what they really look like anymore?

I don't live in the US so I was trying to find the show on the net. All I could find was Tyra with wet relaxed hair. Is that true? Did Imiss something? I thought she was supposed to be "natural"??????????

After her show on "Good Hair" and the pressure of AA women to relax their hair---and all she does it relax her hair but she doesn't wear a wig or weave????

Is it just me or am I missing something:confused5:
  • curlysue21curlysue21 Posts: 5,219Registered Users
After the hype of her "natural" hair, I watched yesterday and while I'm certainly not an expert on AA hair, I was kind of happy about some things but questioned others.

I agree with other comments about Tyra coming clean with the fact that most AA women wear weaves/wigs etc. (to be honest I as caucasian had no idea). I think it would be nice if most women had the guts to be that honest and stop trying to fight what they were born with. I have no problem with women who do use them as an easier way to manage their hair, believe me I'm all about easy. And some of the hair they use really looks great. But I find women who embrace who they are to be so much more beautiful! I love AA ladies who work their curls!
But on the other hand, I watched Tyra and saw her "coming out" with her "natural" hair and was like WTF? I could come out with wet hair and look fantastic too. Then I saw the next episode and she walked on stage with her hair in a ponytail. Again, anyone can work a ponytail! It looks as if she has relaxed it, but still has a pretty wave to it which she could potentially work with. All in all I feel if she wants to make the "natural" transition, do it all the way! Show who you really are!
Oh and if she has relaxed, isn't that going against her whole episode about women who wear fake hair and relax it? I just found that to be kind of a contradiction.
    Just my two cents!

Tyra absolutely has a relaxer and in that episode where she shows her natural hair it looked like she had a very recent relaxer.

If her hair was natural, it would have been curly while she was on stage with it wet. It wasn't. It was bone straight and flat to her head.

I've seen SEVERAL of Tyra's pictures all throughout her childhood and she was born with curly hair.

So it's clear to me she's not "natural".. she's relaxed. Which I already knew was going to happen hence why I had my doubts about this whole "Tyra's going Natural" business being posted all over NC. All Tyra did was take off her wig/weave and got a fresh relaxer.

I personally don't take issue with her being relaxed though because it's up to her what she does with her own hair. Besides, I honestly didn't expect her to be anything but relaxed as most black women in the US do indeed relax their hair to maintain a straighter look reguardless of whether they wear weaves, wigs, or add-on pieces.

Tyra's hair was curly on today's show and it looked really cute. So I am wondering if the straight look was just straightened and not relaxed.

You can see it on this preview on her website:

I watched her show today with Chris Rock. Chris Rock was talking about her lace wigs. It was funny when Chris Rock said, "Tyra, it looked like you had a helmet on yo head!" lol Her hair was curly BUT she says she will still put weaves in her hair. I don't understand Tyra's point of going natural.

I saw the preview from the Kathy Griffin episode and I still think Tyra has a relaxer..I think she just had a her hair set in twists, braids, or rollers then taken out to get that effect. I've seen many relaxed women with their hair set that way but it's not natural.

I saw some recent pictures of her showcasing her new figure and she had her own hair curled in big curls clearly done with a roller set or big barrel curling iron. And I have to say I ABSOLUTELY loved the look on her. Tyra looks so much prettier with her own hair styled.

The styles her hair dresser has been giving her look so pretty and flatter her face a lot! Tyra works in Hollywood though and I can certainly understand her getting a wig or weave at some point because some of these photo shoot stylists and what not can really damage the natural hair.. this is a why a lot of celebs wear wigs and weaves in the first place as an attempt to try to protect their own hair from wear and tear from all the constant styling.
