My Big Chop Happened Today!

Well, it's official! No more relaxed ends! It was kind of anti-climatic... thought I would be more shocked...but since she (Steffie) didn't have much to trim, I was basically almost there. About a half-inch cut from the top and about a quarter-inch over the rest. I have about 3.5 inches of hair now. This is different....

Got it done at the Aveda Institute in my area. Apparently they don't see too many natural-haired aspiring sistahs up in that place. But Steffie (a multiracial sister) was SO NICE! I've already made my appointment for my trim with her in 8 weeks.

She was very honest about the products, and she was knowledgeable about how to moisturize my hair and to work up some curl definition (cold water rinses, etc.) She said that I until I get some length, I should use some old-school brown gels and just work them through.... I'm open to suggestions re. curl definition....

So I've crossed over into the natural hair world.... Thanks for your support....

    Congratulations!

I disagree with your stylist though about the brown gel. Maybe fantasia gel with sparklelites or Aubrey B5 gel (my favorite right now)..but stay away from that brown gel.

Thank you!!!! I've dodged the brown gels and I had been using the Fantasia gel with sparklelites.... I want to try the Aubrey B5 gel.... I think it's my technique (I had another post about this question).... Here's my album with photos from just yesterday (less than 24 hours before the big chop!) I know and I see curls there, but how to get them to pop up?

    CONGRATULATIONS!!! :D

I would suggest Suave Aloe vera gel (real cheap, but good) and a good leave-in...I like Pantene soft curl comb-in treatment (it has cones though).

Fantasia IC is good choice as well.

    CONGRATS AGAIN!! :D

Congrats!!!! Yes I agree with TroDous, brown gels are a no no. If you want anything stronger than a curl activator gel I would go with IC Fantasia.

    yay! congrats!

and i agree with everyone else, stay away from the brown gels. they are loaded with protein. (although i think there is one brown one out there that's not a protein gel...but that's the exception...be careful) i use fantasia gel and love it.

Um, kina.... are you talking about me as your hair twin? And if so, are you saying that when my hair grows out it will look like yours? 'Cause if you're saying that I must send you a HUGE cyberhug and thank you for the inspiration! :D

Yes I am. Teach you? Girl teach me, lol. I've natural for 2 years and now I am trying to find ways to ensure that moisture stays in my strands. I have to get my pics uploaded so you can see how my hair looks without the products in the way. Also thanks,My daughter is a force to be reckon with now.

I tried alot of stuff that sucked, like gels, creams, and mousse<<<what was I thinking!!!! So today I wet my hair as usual (I do this everyday) and I put some conditioner in as my styling product and threw it in a ponytail. Girl I was shocked at the curl definition I had today. I usually use the ic fantasia (blue) but it makes my hair lose curl (okay, I'm heave handed) so I put just a dab on my hair to smooth it back. And I was good to go. I used VO5's Blushing Apple.
