All this talk about beauty...What about the ugly people?

FreeCurlsFreeCurls Posts: 4,408Registered Users
Let's flip the coin. Do you think there are truly ugly people out there or can everyone look at least pretty with a little help? (and I'm not talking scarred beyond recognition or some other outside occurence that has marred someone's good looks)

Have you ever come across someone you would classifiy as ugly? I'm talking "no alibi ugly".

What makes a person ugly to you?

There are plain looking folks out there and it's hard to classify someone as just ugly I know but be honest. Does ugly exist and if so have you met it?

I don't wanna say ugly, but there are some unattractive people out there. I've had some work associates, that by most standards, they would not be considered handsome/pretty. But you get past that and get to know the person, it doesn't matter you still like them and consider them a good person/friend.

Yes, but it was a combo of not so great outer beauty coupled with an ugly personality.

Hmmm, that's a tough question. There are physicaly unattractive people, and there are attractive people who are ugly. Physically speaking, I don't think anyone is ugly to everyone. Someone may have an "ugly nose" for example, that someone else thinks is unique and beautiful.

Overall, I'd say I see phsically unattractive people every day, but I think most of them could be at least average if they had the time and effort (some of these people are homeless or drug addicts, etc.).

I know, I know, I really didn't answer the question at all.

To me it doesn't matter how beautiful you are on the outside if you are uggly on the inside. It is all uggly then. So yes, to me there are really uggly people out there in that perspective.

Beauty is very subjective to me.

I'm going to try to stick to the superficial level, since that's what I think the OP was going for.

Yes, there are truly physically unattractive people, IMO. But there are many, many, many people who would look a whole hell of a lot better if they bothered to do anything at all about their appearance.

Yes, there are truly ugly people.
But it is also their personalities and the things they do that help make them ugly.

    Case in point:

    untitled-1.jpg

Anyone that would do this to their body is not attractive...inside or out.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for posting that...but drugs is one of the most disgusting things you can do to yourself.

it's just interesting how we've been conditioned to put a value judgement on "Ugly" it's very hard (as shown by some of the posts) to just come out and say it because to call someone ugly is always coupled with judgement and negativity. whereas beauty can be tossed about without a care because, well doesn't everyone want to be beautiful? Maybe ugly people wouldn't feel so bad about being ugly if others could just accept it?

(I'm doing a bit of rambling and musing here)

Would we recognize beauty if we didn't have ugly?

    I've known ugly.

I've met someone and had the reaction "damn, he's ugly!" I also have some people who, because of knowing them, I now believe are really, horribly ugly. The person who that was my initial reaction, it changed due to his personality. The people who are ugly from knowing them would most likely never be redeemable.

Hmm... The thing is that beauty is so different from person to person. What we like and don't like. What is ugly for some is pretty for others.

It feels down right nasty to point someone out as being ugly to me. I took a little class about Body Image at a University and it made me think lots about that stuff. How subjective it is and how someone can look pretty at first glance and then you get to know them and depending on what they are like they turn ugly (it’s like you find ugly things in their looks to match the inside) or stay pretty. Someone who doesn’t seem pretty at first that is a super nice person becomes the most beautiful looking person (like a spouse maybe? ).

I find it interesting (and it's a bit sad too) how the media tells us what is supposed to be pretty (and we all buy into it). And what once was looked upon as pretty changes all the time. Poodle hair was actually nice in the 80's. In the Renaissance (I think that was the time period) women were supposed to have some curves, in some cultures something is pretty while in others it is ugly..

Well, so I don’t like to think superficially. I refuse to! Hehe

    Beauty/ugly is on the inside

    so true Mar.

Did anyone ever see Shallow Hal? thoguht he movie wasn't four start I was impressed with how it represented the concept of whats on the inside is what what makes you beautiful or ugly. I" thinking speifically of a scene where the nurse onthe outside was supposed ot be pretty but when you see her for what she really was she was this strung out, crone loooking like chain-smoking person.

I agree with the general consensus.

You may find someone unattractive at first glimpse, but then you find that they're beautiful inside and soon they don't seem so unattractive anymore.

And then there are other people who look gorgeous when you first meet them, but they're just cruel or shallow on the inside, and soon that starts to shine through to the outside in how you look at them.

I saw it. Twice. Good movie. :)
I remember the nurse. They made her totally nasty looking.

I think ugly/beautiful is relative. There are some people that I find hideous while others think that person is "kinda cute".

    Perfect example, Lil Wanye:

    lil_wayne.jpg

I throw up a little just looking at him but others find him quirky and cute. *Shrug*

I think most everyone has something attractive about them. Even in Lil Wayne's case, his rapping style makes him attractive to me. Jay-Z for instance, the way he carries himself and his style. WOW.

Are you serious? I have never seen pictures of you; but, you are a very nice poster, so, I have to disagree with you. Ugliness comes from within. I do not see true ugliness anywhere except for in people's actions.

I may not be too ugly on the inside  but I am on the outside. I don't kid myself I'm no beauty. I used to get upset about it but I don't think about it so much now. I was born this way can't help that.

I don't know, I think there's a difference between "ugly" and letting oneself go. For example ,there is a very nice woman who works at my fathers store. Our family has known her since she was a teen and she was always very very pretty. But in the past couple years, she began comsuming two or three TWO LITER bottles of Coke A DAY all by herself, and as a result, has gained over 100 pounds and lost many teeth. All in the past few years! This is not an unattractive woman, but because of her bad habits, her appearance is not what it could be.

I think everyone CAN look somewhat good with proper care and grooming.

Sounds like it to me. That she used to be pretty, but she's now ugly because she gained weight.
