Hair throwing a tantrum

(Cross posted to Going Shampoo-less)

My hair and I are having problems.

I went CG at the beginning of June and absolutely loved the results! Soft, lushes, beautiful curls.
Co-wash with Suave naturals coconut
Condition with Freeman papaya and coconut conditioner.
then I plop with Got 2B Spiked Up Max Control Styling Gelfor about 5-10 mins.

Normally I can get pretty good second day hair by spraying with a water/conditioner mixture and then applying some more gel.

The problem arose about a week ago maybe. :laughing2:Suddenly my hair is horribly horribly dry, fizzy and icky. I thought that I would do a DT and applied some coconut oil to my hair and left it on for a few hours. It actually made my hair worse!! Much drier than when I started. Also I seem to be having a lot more hair coming out when I comb it wet.(I've been having to comb it because it's so tangly and knotty...)

I don't know if I should wash my hair with a shampoo and start all over or if maybe I should trim some hair in hopes of getting rid of some split ends....

I'm really at my wits end here. I loved the results I was getting from the CG method but now all I have is a frizzy tangly mess. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!:flower:

I think you need to ACV rinse to clarify and deep condition over night

Lustrasilk Olive Oil Cholestrol conditioner is what i use and you can find it at sally's or you can use the Lustrasilk shea butter and mango conditioner. You can add a little bit of honey with it, also.

I'm no expert, but you might be protein-sensitive. I am and when I use products with protein in them, I get frizzy, dry hair that feels like straw, sometimes even while still in the shower.

I know that Suave coconut & Coconut oil both have some protein in them, but I'm not sure about your Freeman conditioner.

Maybe you can try to cut out the protein for a few days after doing your ACV rinse & see if that helps?

    Good luck!
    2a/2b/2c - I've experienced them all

Still not sure about porosity/protein... my hair takes forever to dry & products often weigh it down, but I like protein. Thus I'm confused.

    LowPoo: Mastey Traite
Cowash: Burt's Bees Super Shiny, Trader Joe's TTT
    DT: Sevi Pumpkin Conditioner
Styling: FSG, Pantene Curls Mousse, SS FHG, AO B5 Design Gel, Giovanni Mousse
    PT: Nexus Emergencee, AO GBP
    Styling Methods: Plopping, diffusing

You might not be protein sensitive. You might just be over-dosing on the protein. Try using some more moisturizing products for a while and see if it helps. I agree with doing the deep treatment and whatever you use make sure it's protein free.

Also - the freeman conditioner does have coco betaine in it. It might just be a little too drying to use as your rinse out. but that's a lot of protein to be putting on your hair every day.

I'd start with backing off the protein for a little while and trying some moisturizing deep treatments left on for as long as you can leave them and see if that doesn't help the situation some.

Will do! I'm just not sure what to use for a second conditioner. It seems like everything I look at (at least here in the stixs of N. Fl.) has -cones or sulfates in it. I might have to break down and buy something more than the typical drugstore condish.

Anics- do you have a Sally's nearby? I love, love love the GVP Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm. I got it on some recs from here. Very moisturizing and I don't think any protein (someone correct me if I'm wrong;-)).

    Sally's is also online.

    Good luck!

No protein in the GVP balm! I love it too! You could try that or Walgreens sells a version. So does Aldi's. The suave naturals line of conditioners don't all have protein in them either. The Garnier Fructis Sleek n Shine conditioner doesn't have cones or protein - but it's oil-heavy. The new triple nutrition doesn't have protein either but does have oils too.

There are several drugstore type brands you can get with no protein. You should be ok. If you can get the Sally's GVP balm - that's really good stuff! Lots of people on here really like it.

+1 for Biolage cond balm knock-offs

For something really rich, look for Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner at a health food store. Even the little mom and pop ones usually carry Aubrey products.

Hey y'all thanks so much for the help! I went into town today and picked up the product from Sally's. I'm going to try it in the morning.

Today (since I had to go into "the big city") I just used the co wash condish twice instead of the freeman's and my hair has more curl to it but it is still extremely frizzy. Kind of like a frizz cloud around my head. I think it might be time to do some trimming to the ends.

Any way Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

When I was at Sally's today they had these on sale for $1.99. It was a huge jar. I bought several including the two mentioned above.

    Thanks for recommending them!

Hey, I used the GVP (?) last night ((smells amazing!!)) and although it is too soon to tell the difference I think I wanted to post some pics of my 'good bad day' hair, if that makes any sense.

anics - You have such pretty hair!

I'm glad you like the GVP CB. It is truly one of my favorites.

I don't think your "halo" of frizz is bad at all. What are you using for styling? And are you using enough? I found that I needed to use MORE gel than I thought. Made a huge difference.

What texture is your hair? This sounds EXACTLY like mine did when I didn't get enough protein.

All of a sudden it got spastic and dry feeling.

I'm not sure about the texture... I do think it hates protien though (if that's what it gets from oils and what not.) When it started getting super dry/frizzy I tried an oil treatment with coconut oil and it made my hair so much worse... It felt like I had fried it.

PJs mommy: Thanks so much! I love my hair 99.5% of the time now that I have gone CG.

I use about a quarter size dollop of got2Be spiked up gel (it's blue with a yellow/orange cap) in my hair. I almost think I need some kind of mousse to get more volume lately.

    You are so welcome!

A quarter size wasn't enough for me. I start with that and scrunch it through completely. Then I'll repeat. After I flip my head back up, I smooth a small dab in my hands and scrunch it in the places prone to frizz (near the top). I use the Volumax Volumizing styling gel from Sally's - 32oz for like $8. It's really good. I also have the DEVA Curl diffuser attachment for my hairdryer (it looks like a green hand:D-I got it at ULTA). I use that to just dry my roots and get some lift. Then I like to do some internet surfing with the ceiling fan on high to airdry the rest. This has been my best routine so far.

no there's not a whole lot of protein in oils... have you ever done an egg/mayo mask?

Coconut oil does have a good bit of protein, however, if all oils do that to you, it's probably more that your hair doesn't like much oil that's causing the problem rather than the protein in that one oil - that's how mine is.
