Dry scalp, sulf free poo, & other ?s

So I have been CG since 6/28, and in the last week or so, I have gotten what I have determined to be dry scalp. (Via this article /home/leaving?" class="Popup)

Is this normal for new CGs? I bought a sulfate free shampoo by Freeman, Pure Color Fresh Curl Shampoo. Should I use this, or should I wait it out? At first, my scalp itched a good bit, but last night I did a baking soda scrub and an ACV rinse.

Any opinions or helpful hints? I've got tea tree oil as well, how much do I add to my conditioner? Or, how do I use it?

Check out the threads in the newbie section. There are lots of uesful info for those new to CG.

What do you wash your hair with now? Was your scalp on the dry side before beginning CG? Has conditioner washing helped or made the dry scalp situation worse? From what you said about the baking soda and acv rinse helping, I'm guessing that conditioner washing once or two to three times a week may help you. Suave Naturals conditioners are great for conditoner washing.

Do you use conditioner? Do you leave any in? Are you just applying leave-in conditioner to your hair and not your scalp?

I am now modified CG. My scalp itched a lot when full CG but this was because I have a naturally oily scalp and washing with conditioner caused too much build up and greasy scalp conditions. However, for a lot of people, an itchy scalp means that the scalp needs more moisture.

I get dry scalp too. There can be many reasons for this, like

    - product buildup - you should massage your co-wash into the scalp to get at the gunk, then leave it on for several minutes before rinsing (a shower cap would be useful for this)

    - not rinsing well enough, causing conditioner buildup on scalp

    - bad reaction to some ingredient

    - starting CG without doing a clarifying sulfate shampoo first

    - washing with hot water

You can go ahead and try the sulfate-free poo, it wouldn't hurt to try it and see if your hair likes it.

I am CG & cowash as often as necessary - it's kindda humid & icky nowadays so I co-wash about every other day or so. I use Biolage conditioning balm. I used to be modified CG & used sulfate-free poos & the occasional sulfate poo, but over time my scalp got really itchy after shampooing. So I'm back on co-washing only.

I've also done the deep conditioning treatment recipe posted at the long hair community, it really took away my scalp itchies. Here's a link: /home/leaving?" class="Popup

Good luck! Hope this gives you some ideas...

    Hi there,
I have been itchy ever since starting the modified curly routine, I also have an oily scalp and complexion and co-washing never worked for me either. What products are you currently using? I am starting to think I am allergic to low poos, I don't use anything with cones and I'm really tired of having build up and an itchy scalp. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

I've never had an oily scalp, but I had a bit of itching too. I got a bottle of aloe vera gel to see if aloe does anything for my curls, and surprisingly the itching has been greatly reduced. Aloe is moisture and it's soothing, so apparently that helps. I don't know if it would make a difference on an oily scalp though, but it probably couldn't hurt.
No cones since 08/25/09. Occasional low poo.
Fine, normal to low porosity (still not sure which), ii, 3a/3b curls
