Getting Shiney Hair

aaa00aaaa00a Posts: 284Registered Users
What do you do to get shiney hair? My beloved shine product is discontinued, and my hair is so dull without it.
Wavy, dry, protein sensitive, coarse, highly overly porus, very low elasticity, medium-thick density, very prone to split ends
Avoids: Sulphates, Silicones, Protein, Mineral oil, Petroleum, Polyquaternium, Sodium/Magnesium, Heat
Mod-CG since June 2007

I don't use any products specifically for shine, I just make sure I use a good conditioner and get lots of moisture.
Moisture = shine and less frizz!
Invest in a good quality conditioner :)
    3b-med texture-med porosity
    CG from 21-05-09 2nd try!
Conditioners: Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose, Aubrey Organics GPB Protein
Stylers: CJ CCCC, CJ AFG, KCCC
    Gel: Lavera Organic

I agree. I think my hair is naturally shiny though but a good conditioner works wonders.
    3A/B - low-normal porosity - med to coarse texture

    Shampoo - GTTTT
    Co-Wash - As I Am Coconut Cowash
RO - GVP Cond. Balm, Tresemme Naturals, Yes to Carrots Nourishing, AO Honeysuckle Rose
LI - Hollywood Beauty Olive Cream Headdress
DT - Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholestrol, SM Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment
Stylers - BRHG (old formula is my HG, but the new one has silicones)

Trying out - MGA Sculpting Gel, LA Sports Gel, Got2b Spiked Gel, Got2b Glued

Totally agree with previous posters. My hair is shiny now for the very first time in my life, since going CG, and I don't use anything specifically to make it shine. ACV rinses also seem to really bring out the shine for me too.
Hair type: 2b, wavy/curly, color treated, fine texture but high density
    Modified CG since 6/14/09
Products currently rotating: Organic soap bars, ACV rinse, KBB milk, Fuzzy duck gel, BB Gelee, KCCC, Komaza curl pudding, Goddess Glaze, Mop Top shampoo and condish, Gelatine Goo, Burt's Bees More Moisture condish.
I think my hair likes protein!!

I cannot do full CG, I've tried 10 or so times over the past 2+ years. Even though I find that non-sulfate poo's dry out my hair quite substantially. My hair gets very, very greasy after the first 2 days, and after 2-3 weeks of CG I get a bad case of acne. It's the only time I ever get acne.

I've tried ACV but it made my brittle, dry hair feel like even more like straw. It didn't like it at all. I had to a very strong (aka-added lots and lots of olive oil) DT just to make it feel somewhat 'normal' again - still dry, still brittle, still without any shine.

    Thanks anyways.

Each time you tried how long did you do it for. I know a lot of people have an adjustment period when going CG.

ETA - I see you said you get acne after 2-3 weeks. Could it be certain products or was it with all products?

Maybe a low poo one a week would help?

The last time I attempted it, I used no products at all (except conditioner). Most attempts, I've made it to 3 weeks. After that I quit because I just can't take the greasiness and the acne won't go away.

I end up, after the first 5 days, having to wash my face every 4-5 hours and use blotting clothes in between.
It's gross! The oils from my scalp literally drip down my face constantly at that point. *cringes*
I can't co-wash because it makes my scalp produce more oil. I just use water and my finger tips and scrub, scrub, scrub my scalp...twice a day after the first 3-4 days; I condition the hair once a day.

Maybe one day, I'll be able to get through it. I'm going to try again as of the first Monday of August.

I do a modified CG also, and use shampoo bars every 3 days or so (I would break out too if I just co-washed all the time!). That is when I use the ACV rinse, but what I do is I shampoo with the bar, then put in a good moisturizing conditioner, then do the ACV rinse--this helps with the dryness because the ACV rinse seals the cuticle, but it seals it with some of the moisturizing conditioner left in. So I don't just do a plain ACV rinse, that would definitely leave my hair like straw! I did this today, then used [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] and some moisturizing gel and my hair is super shiny!

Oh, well, I would never just put ACV on my hair. Yikes, that would be bad. I don't remember how I used to use it for sure, but I'm sure it would be something like that. It's been at least a year since I last used it.

I currently us TIGI MM, but I find that even the small amount of protein that is in that is too much.

If you decided on a low poo.
Aubrey Organics has one for oily hair but it is still a low poo.

Maybe try going CG but with a low-poo once a week or more or less depending on how your head feels.

There is also one for shine. But it has protein high on the list. The first has protein but lower on the list.

There are also a couple by Giovanni. One is 50:50 Balance.

While I do tend to have naturally shiny hair, I will say that ACVs boost shine for sure. And Honey in my condish helps in summer.

I've been modified-CG for just over 2 years now. I try to not wash my hair too often, but it's hard to just let my roots be greasy, maybe I should try again to wash it less often.

I never get shine no matter what i do but when I was young with virgin (not dyed) hair I never had shine either so I can't expect too much now that I am older and blonde it up to get rid of the gray. I do protein condish and take pretty good care of my hair but it is thin, even though I have a lot of it -- just never shines and if it did shine, it'd be weighed down and flat looking -- oh well, still get many compliments daily so it's all good.....I thank the Lord every night I have a lot of hair -- many women in their 60s don't.
Homemade FSG, CK, KCCC and BRHG. Co wash w/Suave, or soap bars (occasionally) or Come Clean (Kinky Curly).

I was just reading a bunch of stuff and apparently rinsing hair with diluted lime juice is an alternative to ACV. So I'm going to try that, I just have to find what ratio to dilute it at.
