UK newbie - help with CG

Crystal TipsCrystal Tips Registered Users Posts: 240 Curl Neophyte
Hi everyone

I've spent all day looking thru' the forums - and hope I am posting in the right place :dontknow:. I've never posted on a forum before so hope I can do it! lol (I've also posted the same on the Announcements and Introductions thread - just in case!)

I would like to start a CG routine. Problem is I live in London in the UK - aarrgghh! Not only do we have curl unfriendly weather virtually all year round - lol - but we have no curly hair specialists or products! Go figure! I have discovered, thanks to this site, there are some products out there in UK stores, Boots etc and of course Curl mart ship to UK (thank god!) but I don't know where to start. I think I probably have 3a ish hair - maybe with a bit of 3b - it is getting greyer and greyer by the day - I have highlights (tint) and root semi-permenent colour regularly. I have used salon products for years - eg kerastase, sebastian, bumble and bumble etc - and TIGI curls rock (which has been fab for my hair) but cannot use any of them if I want to go CG.

I would be grateful for any advice on products that you guys think might be suitable. I can get Curl Junkie coffee cocoa creme from a new british website - www.britishcurlies.co.uk - would this be good for 3a/b hair? I know I will need to use some kind of styling product on wet hair in addition to a conditioner - my hair just soaks up anything (probably because I've been having colour since my early twenties!).

Sorry this post is so long! :help:

I have ordered some CJ coffee cocoa creme from the bc website. I think I have 3a hair - will let you know how it is. If you search through the previous posts for details on CG it will give you lots of ideas. I'm a newbie too on this site and spend most of my time reading and now trying things. From what I can gather it will just take time to find the products and routine that work for you.

    Hi there Curlyhairmichuk

There is a huge amount of info on here which is great - trouble is I'm a bit of a knowledge addict so have spent hours today trying to cram it all in! lol - one thing I do know - I wish we had more CG suitable products here in the UK :angry5:

Twould be great if you could let me know how you get on with the CJ coffee cocoa creme - I've recently stocked up on hair products and, of course, all not suitable if I go the CG route! I won't mind if i can find a regime that will work

    Hi ellageorgina

Thanks for the info  - I was thinking of ordering the Curly Junkie Coffee Cocoa Creme from the British Curlies site - have you tried it by chance? Yes, have looked at the Aubrey Organics stuff - thought I'd try out the Honeysuckle Rose conditioner - any thoughts? Best place to buy in London would be great - thanks
I love your hair in your avatar pic :happy7: I've been reading about texture and porosity and the stuff I've read seems to make a lot of sense - I have mine coloured and so is quite porous - especially canopy - what kind of hair do you have? (apart from gorgeously curly, of course)

    Hi again mpgirl

Did you buy the Sally generic reconstructor here, in the UK? I went in to the Shaftesbury Ave branch in London today to enquire about that and the biosilk rock hard gelee. Well - gobsmacked! They hadn't heard of generic products and have DISCONTINUED from all the Sally's in the UK all the - and I quote - "cheap products" from their stock - which includes the biosilk gel!! Bloody hell - I've only just started out - haven't even got enough stuff yet to begin the regime from the UK's very limited supply and then - to be told this! Well peed off, I can tell you.
What's a curly girl to do? Any ideas mpgirl? All help gratefully received :help:

I just have like medium hair all over and thank u for the compliment :)
I've used AOHR and love it and also the protein one which is amazing. I alternate and use the one I haven't used as a leave-in.
I also made a '2nd day hair reviver spritz' made of half AOHR and water and it's lovely :)
I love the CJ CCCC and the CJ AFG. I use them both.
If you want a good strong hold gel available in London then go for boots mega hold gel! (the clear one)
Or if you're willing to spend like £10 you can get LA looks sports gels on www.amazon.co.uk the bottle is HUUUUUGE like over 20oz I think so it's worht it and will last you.
Another one you can get from amazon is la bella lots of curls gel - about the same price and again it's MASSSSSIVE!
    Hope that helps :)

Ooops, forgot...the UK. Well, maybe more of the UK curlies will chime in. In the meantime, if you can get your hands on Nexxus products, they have a proein treatment called Emergencee. It is very popular on these boards. I purchased some from a local drugstore yesterday to try next week. I will check around and see if I can find any links to sources in the UK.

Oh what fun!!! I was hoping to start the CG this week but am still missing a cowash and a gel so can't yet! I might give up a get a shipment of something from curlmart! - lol

Thanks, so much for that - ;-) - I'm making a proper list now to try and get organised - I think I've got information overload

I hope you don't mind me asking you a couple more q's?
Haven't bought the AOHR yet but intend to - would this be a good rinse out and DT? Also, you say Amazon has everything but do you mean the dot com site - cos the dot uk site hasn't got the stuff I am looking for.

    Have bought already:
Dr Organic Organic Aloe Vera gel (for skin)
Organic apple cider vinegar (thought my hair might like this - never tried before)
    Dr Organic Aloe Vera Conditioner
    Boots pink curl creme

Think I'm missing a cowash, DT and hard(ish) hold gel of some kind.

I really appreciate all the help and info you have given me - thank you :p

You can definitely get cheaper things here as well (I've noticed most of the suggestions here have been quite pricey). This thread has a whole bunch of suggestions of things available in the UK: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/showthread.php?t=7182

Hope you like the Dr. Organics conditioner! It is my absolute favourite thus far!

    Hi there oddityofwings:hello2:

I have looked at that thread - and spotted your suggestion for the Waitrose cranberry and coconut - so will try that.

Do give the Waitrose conditioner a try - but be warned becuase it does have some mineral oil in it, which can bother some people (very little of it in there, best I can tell, though).

It can be information overload here at first, trust me! (the first few days after I found this site, I dreamt about porosity and conditioners!). But the more you read the more you figure things out, and that means (hopefully!) better hair. :-)

Wanted to try the Original Source first but couldn't get it in Boots or Supermarkets - so will probably find on my travels. All I need now is a gel - haven't been able to get the talked about ones - Biosilk and LA Looks sport - luckily husband off to states in a few days so can get me some LA - a CGer on the boards has also offered to sell me some of hers - v kind of her :happy3:

In all honesty, if you buy the purple Boots essentials gel (hard hold), it's as good as just about anything else. No need for the expensive stuff - and it's probably comparable to LA Looks. Less than a pound at Boots. :) (Personally, I'd never pay loads of money for the LA Looks stuff... I know it's bottom of the barrel in the US - maybe a dollar or two per bottle/tub - at least it was last time I was home. Anyone selling it for more than that plus shipping is really trying to swindle people).

Thanks so much for that :happy3: I was thinking I would have to just find a substitute - I really want to be able to source products from here as I can imagine going nuts if I started with something from overseas and then couldn't get it later!! lol I will try that gel - and if my husband can find the la looks when he's over in the states then that's fine. The CGer was a brit also, so she paid a lot more for the product originally.

Am reading, and reading, and reading - my eyes are now very fuzzy and am neglecting all the other stuff I'm supposed to be doing!! LOL :goofy:

Here are a few suggestions- it took me ages to find stuff that worked for me- I went through a lot of product! My hair responds best to more natural products- so most of these are.

Firstly- the most important product advice I can give is : Flaxseed gel!!! Seriously, it is stupidly cheap- a few pence, and the majority of peoples hair on here responds amazingly well to it. It is completely natural and moisturizing, but also gives hold. You make it yourself, but it VERY easy and you can play with the ingredients for scent, hold, moisturizing properties etc. If you do a search for flaxseed gel, everything you need to know will come up. Basically go to Holland and Barratts and get a pack of linseeds (same thing). This will last you FOREVER because you only need 2 tablespoons each time, in a cup of boiling water, simmer for 10 mins, drain the gel from normal sieve, leave to cool and there you have it. It can be frozen, and needs to be kept in the fridge unless you add a few drops of grapefruit seed extract like I do to preserve it longer. I'd give it a try, because every bought hair gel I have tried has just dried my hair out. Email me if you want some more info on it.

    Conditions:
-Aubrey Organics http://www.aubreyorganicsuk.co.uk/ (also have natural hairgel, pretty similar to what just described above but costs lot more- but more hold and lasts lot longer because has lots preservatives in it)
-Faith in Nature - lovely conditioners and pretty cheap http://www.faithinnature.co.uk/
-Australian organics (Holland and Barratt- where also have various other conditioners you might want to try)
    - http://www.nubiannatural.com/ (have some lovely conditioners)
    - http://www.handmadenaturals.co.uk/- this lady is lovely and if you ask will send you a sample in a smaller bottle. I use the shampoo (for while Im in a hard water area, I find purely cg doesnt work for me- I get build up and greasy roots and this shampoo is lovely and doesnt mess up my curls- you may also have a problem washing with purely conditioner if you are in London but give it a try) the conditioners are also great
-VO5 moisture milks- I've only found the ones you want in Poundland - dont be tricked into just getting ones from your normal boots/superdrug they sell different ones here to america, you want the ones they sell in america and for some reason poundland sells them here- these r the best I have found for 'cleaning' you hair instead of shampoo if you are going no-poo ( I alternate between this and the shampoo bars when I am in a soft water area)

http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com/- now these people are amazing. They are from america, BUT you can get a load of cheap sample bars in an envelope which costs same as most normal postage and packaging from websites in uk!!! It also arrives very quickly. I have had my bars a year and still havent got through them all (granted I switch products all the time). Again- search online here and you will find loads of threads on them. giving advice and reviews.

You def want to try boots curl creme- its very cheap, works great and comes in big tube (pink)

Long post but I know how hard it is when you are just getting started and trying to track down products. Im sure there are loads more out there- the curltalk boards are the best place because you can find any advice and recommendations you want from there. I have found what works for me and stopped looking now I went through loads of products and spent money importing stuff that was favourites on the board- most of time I found products available here worked best for me (and were cheaper). Check out the threads on this swap board, I swapped/got second hand stuff on there- its great for trying out stuff more cheaply. Good luck!

Wow!! Thanks so much for that Kat180 - fantastic! I will def try making some flaxseed gel - already have linseeds, great! So, it is 2 tbs linseeds to 1 cup water - is that right? Also, how many drops grapefruit seed extract? (I think i might have some of this too!)

Also, which poundland did you get the VO5 moisture milks condish? I live in London but was down in B'mth at weekend and tried the poundland in Boscombe but they didn't have any - only the Alberto Balsam - which I know contain the bad stuff.

Have got the AOHR conditioner already - although not starting CG til next week have already used this conditioner - hair loves it!

Also managed to find OS Almond and coconut condish for cowash - so that's good. Have got boots curl creme and CJ CCCC. Found Louise Galvin DT in Tesco and Waitrose - and ACV in Whole Foods Soho (have done an ACV once already, noticed hair was softer).

Ellageorgina recommended I use Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo as my final shampoo before starting CG - so I will get a travel sized bottle as all my shampoos at home contain 'cones.

I have also bought boots purple gel - firm hold - so will try this and hope it does not dry my hair out! I know I need a decent amount of hold - the curls rock amplifier I've been using for the last 18 months is really great for me but cone loaded so I know it has to go! Throughout my curly life it has alway been the styling products that have been the most difficult to find - so many dry out your hair!:angry8:

I have also pre-ordered KCCC from British Curlies to try, based on the feedback in these forums.

Have spent a bloody fortune so far and haven't even started yet!

For my first attempt at CG I will try:
co-wash: OS Almond & coconut condish
    condish: AOHR
Styling: CJ CCCC plus boots gel or maybe the homemade flaxseed as per your recipe!

Thanks again - sorry this is so loooong :happy7:

Lol- I know the feeling I spent a fortune trying things. But if you get hold of the more expensive stuff, or some of the more popular brands that are harder to get here and they don't work out for you, put them up the swap board- its a great way for getting some money back, or trying some other things out at no extra cost.

    Flaxseed (linseed) Gel:

    2 tablespoons
    1 cup of water
    Simmer for 10 mins
Once cooled a bit add in 24 drops of grapefruit seed extract ( I have a tiny bottle that has lasted months).

Dont go over-board and try too many things at once- its exciting trying everything but you need to give things a chance to see if they work before moving onto the next product!

One other tip- you may find as I did that combing your hair at any stage disrupts the curls and makes if frizzer once it dries. I found best for me is to untangle in the shower just using my fingers, as your hair gets in better conditioned this will be easy to do, I also apply conditioner this way by raking it through with my hands. This takes care of any knots and allows my curls to form nicely. ( I tested in once- after I had done this I put a comb through to check I really was getting all the knots out and it went through easily with no problems- so dont worry using your hands will detangle your hair properly). I never rake in gel or anything else- again for me this disrupts my curls, but turn my head upside down and with product in my hands sort of cup my curls and squeeze my hands until makes squishing noise if that makes sense lol. This is best way to style my hair- which you might like to try. But everyone is different.

    Good luck and have fun!

Thanks so much for the recipe - I will make some up - how long will it last in the fridge?

At the mo, I comb in my condish but scrunch in styling products. All the tangles have always come out with shampooing but I won't be doing that anymore so may have more of a problem. I've been washing my hair just once a week for ages now so I'm sure I'm going to have to conditioner wash more frequently than that - probably 3 times per week - does that sound about right to you?

It will probably last about a couple of weeks or so in the fridge-you can tell when its gone off because it will suddenly smell.

3 times a week sounds about right- I prob do mine every 2-3 days usually.
