silver/black impossible??

I have a friend who used to have gorgeous black hair that started to go silver when she was in her 40's. she is now in late 60's and she has this awful 2 tone white and pink, white on top and pink on the bottom. we talked to a couple of hair colorists who said they could color it blonde and put black lowlights but it is impossible to achieve a silver/black salt and pepper look with artificial coloring.

I asked Karin at Robt Craig who said
"blonde and black looks like blonde and black - the white part of the hair is what is impossible - it can go blonde just not white - the hair melts when removing all the pigment - the non pigmented hair is what makes hair look grey or white or silver - it is mixed with the black or darker hair and the color of the darker hair is what gives the non colored hair the tone, i.e.. silver, grey, etc. these are not shades that can be artificially achieved"

so have any of you tried anything that works regarding this black and silver look? what other options might look nice do u think?
thanks

Why is her hair "pink"? Is that the dark hair that has lightened from coloring?

Maybe she could try stopping the coloring and using a bluing shampoo instead to give her grays a little bit of hue. Then what is left of her dark hair will grow back in and be her pepper and her whites/grays will be her salt.

This isn't impossible, it's just nearly impossible to find someone who will do it. I was looking for this same thing when I started growing out my grey hair. I wanted to blend the grey hair on top with my dark hair underneath so it didn't look so skunkish (I wanted to add grey as I already had the dark part).
So after researching it I come to find out that grey and black hair is a big thing in Asia. They seem to appreciate grey hair alot more than here in the sates. They bleach out the part that will be grey, then add grey dye just like any other hair color. It does take alot of bleaching and isn't something one would want to do at home I don't think.
I'm sure there has to be a salon somewhere closer than Asia that does it. I didn't find anyone close to me, but you might be able to find someone in a big city.

thanks--i really like your hair color--it is a nice silver for sure. her hair is mostly white now so if she could find gray dye then maybe it would happen

I just read your OP again to see why the salon said it wasn't possible. If her hair is already white, I don't understand why the salon says they can't dye it silver or grey. They do sell grey dyes online (again, most of them seem to come from Asia) and if she doesn't have to bleach her hair I really don't see why she couldn't dye it. I'm no hair dye expert, but it seems to me that the bleaching part is the most damaging to hair and the most dangerous to try at home. As you might be able to tell, I can sometimes be skeptical of the 'experts'. :)
