Volume Experiment

rudeechickrudeechick Posts: 6,726Registered Users
OK, so everyone knows I am FOREVER attempting to minimize my volume (especially in summer).

As a departure today I decided to let the volume do its thing and focus instead solely on curl definition. The jury is still out; will need to see how it wears overnite and how it goes with other combos.

Am posting a few pics in my album.

What is it you usually do to control volume that you didn't do this time?
2c-3a. Thick density. Texture = mixture of medium and fine.

Always trying to boost my curl!

Go-to products: Pink Boots, CJSG, LALSG, Abba Pure Finish gel
Experimenting with: CJAF, CJ CCCC, JCRR/CC, BRHG, PB Goo, Re:Coil, Komaza CHP, EcoStyler Protein
Didn't like: HESMU, Matrix Biolage Gelee (both too goopy)

For the record, I think the volume looks great. And I have to say, I love the smooth bangs you have with the curls...I'm new to all this, and I love the ease of the curls all over, but the um..."unstructured" look of my front and bangs is driving me crazy...maybe its ok to smooth just a little after all???

Type: 3a and 3B mix, fine, high-med porosity, low density on top (uhg), medium in back...
Co-wash: EO Rosemary Mint, Suave, or Jessicurl Cleansing Cream
Leave-in: Jessicurl Too Shea, or whatever I co-washed with.
Styling/Gel: KCCC, Aussie Opposites Attract spray gel, CJ Smoothing Gelee Jessicurl RR and CC
    Technique: Clip and air dry

I NEVER EVER apply product upside down - especially a hard hold gel like BRHG. I also diffused leaning way to the side, which is a volume enhancing no-no for me. Didnt have the guts to dry upside down- I have WAY to much hair for that.

lol. U must be psychic! I actualy dried the hair with the bangs to the side and curly (which I never do either). But the finished look was too.... well unfinished for me, so I rewet and blew them:)

    Rudee, Rudee, Rudee!!!!!!

Your hair is gorgeous. I'm not getting the whole volume thing. I understand it (since I have fought volume plenty) but the shape is beautiful.

Having said that, I like the CJLI/SG/HESMU combo It fell very nicely. If you were looking for lower volume and a nice shape, that one did!

Thanks for the feedback - I kinda liked that one myself;) Will have to try it minus the volume control measures.

FYI - my kids have given todays 'do a thumbs down - the difference realy shows in person. They said it has "more curls and tighter curls". And this is from BOYS:confused3:

    Hey Rudee!
Loved your pics I think they all look pretty good. Your hair appears to be very much like mine but my hair is longer. I also have the smooth bangs with the rest curly. It looks very thick and lush! I think sometimes we can see our hair out of the corner of our eyes and we think it is too full but in reality it is not. Makes those thin strait hairs die for it!! You have great hair Rudee. I have missed you on the board.
I hope your SPIRIT is feeling better. I am praying for your SO.

Wow, thanks for the upliifting and kind words:)

I am so trying to learn to love what I've got hair-wise. And yes, sometimes when I think it looked great I'll see pics afterwards and realize a little fullness woulda been cool.

I'm jealous yers is long; I got butchered a while back and am waiting for it to get long again. Got pics?

The diff is clearer in person - its denser and fuzzier and the ringlets are tighter. I could upsidedown a go - strictly for entertainment purposes;)

You guys are nuts - my hair must look way better in pics than in person. Cause in person I am not all that pleased with it these past few months.

As for product application: Generally I put something into my soaking wet hair, wether its just gel or I am using a "base coat" product (DMHJ, a curl cream etc).

Normally I just scrunch in leaning to the sides. When I am using a base coat product I get clumps by brushing it thru with a Denman. My deal is I have to be careful not to enhance the volume, so no upside down, no scrunching with the diffuser bowl, no volume enhancing products.

I tell you its a full time job, this hair.

ITA with the other users. Your hair has just the right amount of volume, and I'm not just saying it to be polite. I've been trying to reduce some of my volume, too, and here are some tips that helped reduce it that are not on your list:

    - No plopping
    - Don't bend over to the side and don't scrunch (unless you want more curl definition, but no bending over)
    - Try keeping your head upright and smoothing the products on. Oh, and use a strong hold gel like HESMU (HETT has worked for me, too for curl definition without all the bulk)

    Hi Rudee!!
Your hair looks healthy & not tooo poofy.
I have a problem keeping down the poof also.
"BIG HAIR" thats what they call it at work.
Lately I have been using BRHG on top of "everything"
else I add to the pot. It has been helping keep things down to a ROAR till its dry and I can SOTC. I look like a wet cat. Been using JC N&S to scrunch so it takes care of the little frizzies and adds some shine I like it a lot.
You have hair very much like mine.

Thank you for the compliments Donna; my hair has not been looking anything like my album pics.

I will post current pics soon (just got a new computer and am setting up files etc).

The BRHG was great for me last summer with the CK. The CK wont work this year (??) and the BRHG helps when used sparingly and in high humidity only - which we would normally have this time of year but our weather has been wonky since March (East Coast).

I hope you don't mind me guanoing, rudee, but when you got your bangs cut, how did the stylist cut them? Wet? dry? I want those kind of bangs, but I'm unsure how to describe them.

also - I soo hear you on the volume thing. I used to apply upside down, plop, diffuse upside down, pineapple to sleep, and then WONDER why I got so much volume. lately, I've just been sleeping on my wet hair and that's been eliminating lots of my volume issues.

She cuts my bangs wet, but she "gets" curly hair. When I get them trimed in between I have them done dry.

I just ask for bangs that taper on the ends (at the temples).
