Any blondes using henna?

SalamanderSalamander Posts: 328Registered Users
I'm a natural strawberry blonde (blonde but with a reddish tint). I've been coloring my grays for a while, but I usually use a neutral dark blonde shade because strawberry blonde or reddish blonde haircolors come out too brassy and red on me -- I suppose the red dye mixes with the natural red tint in my hair and turns bozo-orange.

However, lately I am finding that Natural Instincts, Perfect 10, etc., are not covering my gray well at all, and even the permanent colors are not doing much for the gray.

I'm considering trying henna as I hear it is less damaging/drying and it bonds to your hair better; but I don't want to have bright orange hair. I love the way henna looks on darker hair, but I have visions of looking like Ronald McDonald.

Just For Redheads has a strawberry blonde pre-mixed henna recipe; I'm wondering if I might try it.

Any other blondies having good luck with henna? I just want it to be close to my natural color.

    yep :)

I'm not SUPER super blonde... more of a dirty strawberry blond, I guess you'd call it.

    This is my natural color:

I've been using henna since... uuuuum... about october I think. I've done 2 all over colors, and just done the roots in between (and in all honesty, I probably don't ever need to do another all over...)

My hair's pretty vibrant, but it's not brassy or orange, IMO. This isn't a terribly recent picture, but this is what the henna toned down to after oxidizing for a few days, after the second all over color:

I was deathly afraid of the Ronald McDonald hair too. I'd say definitely do some strand tests and work out EXACTLY what your mixture and timing need to be to get the result you want before putting it on your actual hair.

I use about 3/4 henna and 1/4 cassia (to tone it down a bit) and I only leave it on for 45 minutes to an hour (after letting the mixture sit for 12 hours and dye release)

    HTH :)

My natural color is similar to mimstx and I use a 3/4 cassia and 1/4 henna mix. I do have to leave in for about 2 hours for touch ups. My color is in my avatar.

I wonder if its a porosity difference between our hair that accounts for that timing... mine soaks stuff up like there's no tomorrow lol

    Hi,
I'm not naturally blonde, but a few years ago I had some blonde bits in my hair and when I used henna they went bright green!!! I'm not sure about naturally blonde hair, but if you have had any bleach in your hair then I would suggest being careful about using henna.
PS: MimsTX your hair is stunning!

    aaawww, thanks!

PROBABLY that reaction was caused by the specific type of henna you got. If it wasn't 100% natural Body Art Quality henna (IE, if it was henna mixed with other chemicals and metals) that kind of reaction is pretty much the normal when it comes into contact with other dyes.

The natural henna did perfectly fine over my dyed hair (it was red from a box before i henna'd over it) and actually blended the pre-dye hair and the blond roots seemlessly without any issues.

I recently used a box color in my hair to get a really nice dark deep red...do you think would it be possible to get this kind of color with henna? I hate using the boxes=sulfates=frizz :(

    I'd say it's definitely possible :)

I don't know what your natural color and/or current color is exactly... those things would definitely affect the mixture you'd need to use. And knowing what the actual shade of 'deep red' you're going for as well might help.

check out hennaforhair.com. They have a lot of really good information about the chemical components, reactions, history, etc.

    and they also have: http://www.hennaforhair.com/mixes/hairtable/

AMAZING for figuring out what you need to get what you want. Find someone with similar hair to what you currently have and go from there.

Thanks! MimsTX, my natural color is pretty close to yours, maybe just a little lighter. Your henna-ed hair looks beautiful too.

Looks like I need to order me some henna and cassia...

You also have the option to custom mix your own hair color - http://docs.google.com/View?id=dhbvtkg8_281dm9gvjfx

I've got a guide up on how to mix and use professional hair color. One of the benefits of that is that you get to custom mix your very own shade :)
