Cutting my own hair for funsies! *UPDATE* Pg. 2 Pictures

OperaCurlsOperaCurls Posts: 1,101Registered Users
I've been trying to grow my hair to BSL, but it's been driving me crazy and I wanted a change, so what could be more natural than grabbing the scissors and hacking away?!? This was inspired by all the recent "I cut my own hair and it looks awesome" threads.

/home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.fotki.com%2Fopera-curls%2Fjune-2009-self-haircut%2F" class="Popup

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I probably need to fix some of the layers so they blend better, but I'm waiting to do that after I've lived with the cut for a day or two. What do y'all think? I'm totally up for suggestions on how to improve the cut.

Edit: Update on page 2 with pictures of the new bob.

You did a great job! The hair around my face is unpredictable, too. Sometimes totally straight, sometimes ringlets. I WILL figure out why but it might take a while! :o) But I agree, wait and see what happens before you get too scissor-happy.
I think the longest piece in the back could be trimmed but that's just my opinion; after a few hours more of drying maybe it looks less angled?

Thank you! I agree especially with the bolded part. My hair was still a bit damp when I took the pictures and I had been handling it a lot, so I didn't want to cut off too much. But I think the longest bit will need to be taken up a little. That's the part that's hardest to reach on my head; I might have to find someone whom I trust with scissors near my head to help me with that! (eek!)

how did you cut it? i'm esp. curious about how u did the layers
  • tinahtinah Posts: 1,195Registered Users
It looks great! When I saw the title of the post and then saw who posted it I went "Eeek! She cut that beautiful hair!?!" but it really turned out nice! The layers are good. I agree with the post about the back of it. If it dries ok then I wouldn't worry about it. But you did a really nice job!

I'd also be interested in knowing how you did it and how you did the layers.

Ladies, you are too kind! Thanks for all the positive feedback. :happy6:

I cut my hair while it was dry, starting with the curls framing my face. I took just the hair that naturally falls in front of my ears, and trimmed it using Feye's trimming method for a "v-cut."
    /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fcommunity.livejournal.com%2Ffeyeselftrim%2F" class="Popup
Then I parted the rest of my hair down the middle and snipped individual curls so that the layered front part gradually tapered into the rest of the length. This made for a pretty drastic V shape, as you can see in the pictures. After that was done, I also picked up the curls at my canopy and snipped off a half-inch to release them from getting caught in the under layers and dragging down my crown. Does that make sense?

My hair is still air-drying for the day (go figure) but I'm really excited to see how it looks later! So far, so good.

Edit: I was going to post more pictures but my camera decided to die on me :(

    Who woulda thunk it? :blob4:

Initially when my hair was completely dry I was a little sad that I had lost the length, but since then I've been pleasantly surprised at how much better my curls clump together and don't lose volume or definition throughout the day. Up until now, I thought those things had more to do with product and application than with a cut. My 2B sister even noticed that my curls look bigger and slightly looser because of the better clumps.

Heh, I went into the cut mentally prepared for it to suck and have to go into the salon for a bob!

Oh, and I did end up fixing the back pieces after a few days, but for the most part it looks fine once it's completely dry. I got two unsolicited compliments from strangers yesterday! :toothy3: Talk about a mood-booster.

It looks great. And I agree with Sairis - I would never ever try that because I would end up with no hair. Just trim this one, oh that one needs to be a bit shorter,....oops...so does that one, what is that one doing-might as well cut it. And so on and so on until I had no hair left.

    Sure! :angel2:

Cleansing: I only cleanse my hair with the soap bar or ayurvedic herbs two or three times a month, so for the most part I cowash with the Suave.

Conditioning: Usually use gobs and gobs of my cowash condish to detangle in the shower, then rinse completely and comb in my leave-in to soaking wet hair.

Styling: I generally apply styling products after plopping for 10-15 minutes (no scrunching out water, the towel absorbs the worst of it). The exception would be when I use FSG, which helps with clumps and curl formation; I apply it in the shower. After plopping I'll scrunch in two or three nickel-sized blobs of [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel-p-941.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curl-Junkie-Curl-Assurance-Aloe-Fix-Hair-Styling-Gel]Curl Junkie Aloe Fix[/buylink] Gel using mysteryflavored's [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] application technique, and scrunch a tiny bit of BRHG on the ends for hold. I clip my roots and usually diffuse, but my sister hijacked the blowdryer awhile back so I've been airdrying. I diffuse because it helps with volume.

Thanks opera! I did try combing my hair before putting in my gel, and I like the smaller, separated curls I got today (instead of the big clumpy curls) for a change. :D I can't plop, I get smashed wonky roots/crown. :(

@ Aerohead - ITA about saving money & not being overly stressed about how a self-cut goes after you've done it a few times. At this point, I'm like "It's just hair, it will grow back. And if it looks awful, I can play around with cute accessories and pin it back."

Finally got my camera back and took some photos today. Thank you all for the compliments and encouragement, you are all lovely! Different products give more obviously different results on shorter hair, it seems. Today I used a tiny dab of Giovanni Direct Leave-In, Komaza Coconut Curl Pudding, and BRHG, which made my curls really shiny and uniform. Using LOOB instead of the Komaza & BRHG gives more volume and smaller, more piecy curls, and make the bob look more angled. Fun stuff. :hippy2:
