Good Gels

confused moreconfused more Posts: 29Registered Users
Ok I have tried the AV gel and it makes my hair frizzy with no shine or hold. I do use the rock hard gel. Can't remember who it is made by. But I like how it looks on my hair just wanting to know if there is a cheaper gel that works just as good.

Was so hoping the aloe vera worked because it was cheap but all I get is frizz with it.

AVG isn't meant for hold really - it's more for curl formation and definition as well as some additional light moisture. Some people say it gives them some hold and gets crunchy, but not most.

LA Looks Sports Gel holds just about as well as BRHG but is dirt cheap and available anywhere. Herbal Essences Set Me Up Gel is supposed to be very good, too, although I haven't yet tried it myself.
    2C/3A/3B - modified CG - fairly fine now, normal/low porosity/normal elasticity

Current Main Rotation: MG217 medicated or Aim2Health 'poos for scalp, Elucence cond., Spiral Solutions Protein & Deeply Decadent Cond., CJCCCC reg or lite,CJ Pattern Pusha,, Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz + lots more, sporadically

HG Method: Super Soaker + Smasters-ing, brief upside down diffusing w/360o diffuser then clips/clamps & air dry. Newly gray - stopped my henna glosses!

Have you tried the LA Looks gel? It's super cheap. I ask because this stuff gave me tons of shine, no frizz, but way too much hold. The AVG was just enough hold for me. Someone also recommended Herbal Essences Set Me Up Gel. I've purchased it but not yet used it.

I really like Biolage Gelee. I think it's not very popular on here because it has polyquats which supposedly can cause product buildup. I low-poo daily - waterwashing and cowashing didn't work for me - so I don't experience a build-up problem.

It amazes me that some curlies get hold from AVG. I do not think I will ever give up my BHRG. It's always my standby. I like HESMU. And I will use other gels as long as I am ok with my curls getting limp by the end of the day. Heck-even with BHRG they fall. I have just accepted the fact that my hair will only look really good right after I scrunch out my crunch. After that all bets are off but for me, that is the issue with fine hair - it just cannot hold up like thicker hair can - at least that is my theory.

I probably have 25 gels in my stash. Someday I will use them all up and live with 2-3.

I vaguely remember trying BRHG years ago and I seem to remember it making my hair super crunchy. Is that what you experience? My curl definitely relaxes quickly with the AVG (even though I used an entire travel size bottle of the FOTE the first time), but I just cant seem to SOTC sufficiently with pretty much any other gel. Do you think the HESMU will be any different?

I picked up a bottle of La Bella For Curls at the local dollar stores last weekend, nice big bottle and quite cheap. I have not tried it yet but found some old threads that mentioned it.

Sorry for the dumb question but I'm kinda confused about how to use a gel. For those who use a gel and a curl creme like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] how do you use them? Do you scrunch them both in? Rake them? Mix them together and apply together? Or do you apply one after the other? I'm using [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Kinky-Curly-Curling-Custard-p-778.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=kinkycurly-curling-custard]KCCC[/buylink] after my leave in but I'd like some hold and maybe some volume and was hoping a gel could help with that. Thoughts?

Some need a gel over it and some don't. That being said, I apply all of my products like mysteryflavored's video:

I also scrunch in gel using the mysteryflavored method.

For me, the only gel I love as much as BRHG is Abba pure finish firm hold. You still have to SOTC once it dries, but hair dries softer than with BRHG. It costs about the same as BRHG, though, so if your goal is to save $ your best bet is probably to give the L.A. Looks gel a try.

The HESMU spray gel is nice, IMO, but doesn't have quite as much hold as BRHG. Also, I think it adds a lot of volume to hair, which I don't like personally but think it would be great for someone with fine thin hair.

I find HESMU a bit easier to scrunch out. But I also find that my curl will fall a bit more when using this gel.

I like both BRHG and HESMU. If you want a gel thats in between the 2, the Aquage Defining Gel is great!
