Rinsing out dye with no 'poo

How can I rinse out conventional hair dye without using the shampoo provided with the dye kit? Would shikakai work? Baking soda?

I don't really want to go down the henna road, since I want to brighten up my mousy hair rather than make it reddish or dark.

Just worried about not being able to get rid of all the dye residue without shampoo! There must be a way...

Thanks :)
Fine texture (I think?!), normal porosity
No 'poo since May 2007

Current products (used only as & when required!):
- Naked Sensitive Scalp conditioner
- Shikakai powder
- Jojoba oil

I don't recall ever shampooing after dying my hair at home- the kits I've bought provide a packet of conditioner. Now that I'm CG I just rinse till the water runs clear and then use my own condish.
