For example:

    From what I have read:

hair washed with hard water faces many negative effects such as split ends, loss of color, breakage, rough edges along strands.

I am back to hard water from soft and my hair is highly effected by it.
    3a/b medium/coarse combo(w/some fine strands), normal porosity, normal elasticity(strong)
Komaza analysis 2015: medium to coarse combo(some fine strands), normal porosity, strong elasticity, healthy hair
Goosefootprints 2013: moderately coarse with some medium; low porosity at roots, normal thru shaft, porous ends, normal elasticity

Thanks for your reply. :happy2: I think we're having that problem right now with extreme dullness to color of hair and rough feeling. Wow, gotta see what can be done within budget, lol.

We have hard water, and I deal with dull, tangled hair. :( I'm still trying to find a good routine to combat it.
Grew up thinking I had straight hair that was just messy and in need of a good brushing.
Discovered my true texture and transitioned to CG in April 2009.
Now I'm a 2c/3a using the DevaCurl line, and I'm finally developing a deeper love for my hair!

Have you all tried a shower filter that fits onto the showerhead? I don't have a water hardness issue, but it might help.

I have medium hard water if that makes any sense. On the hard water scale I was in the middle. I do use a clarifying/hard water shampoo about 1x a month or when my hair feels like it needs it. Funny thing - when I travel and I come across soft water - I have more issues with that because my hair does not react the same so I struggle with it just because of the change.

There are some threads that discuss this issue - here are some I found by searching:

I have hard water and I use distilled water in a spray bottle. A gallon of that is mad inexpensive. But I've hear many ladies on here speak of getting good $30 shower filters

From what I understand, there are filters out that that you attach to your showerhead that contain citric acid tablets to help neutralize the hardness of the water. So, maybe a cheaper way to try it out would be to get some citric acid and try it as a final rinse??? I have pretty soft water, so it's not something I've ever tried, but maybe it would work!

I did a little 'net research and it was suggested that rinsing with 2 c. cool water and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar would help with mineral deposits on your hair due to hard water. It is okay to leave this rinse in as it evaporates and the vinegar smell goes away after a bit. Or you can do a very light water rinse after ...

Our water is hard (my hair has been breaking and dull), so I am going to try this my next condish wash.
mostly 3a, CG'er (since 4/02), dark brown w/ some grey, loose coils, below shoulder length

My hair's the same way. I never know what products to use because of the water change... I just use what I normally use and hope for the best. It tends to get a little "fluffier" especially with city water since it contains chlorine. We're out in the country and have well water here.

I've been having hard water problems lately, and they mostly manifested in super stringy, undefined or super crunchy hair that I just couldn't scrunch the product out of. It was really, really crappy and I seriously considered going back to sulfates because I knew that at least they worked. I did an ACV rinse and it worked miracles -- my hair looks four hundred times better already. I think I'll have to do one once a week, despite the fact that they're drying, because even after a few days I can tell that the water is starting to build up again.

It's an endless cycle, but at least there are a few things we can do!

Hair type: Fine, fairly porous, shoulder length when curly. Probably a 3a or 3b with tight ringlets now that it's getting longer. Hair loves aloe, hates glycerin.

Co-Wash: Suave Naturals Aloe and Waterlily (my HG conditioner!)
Rinse Out: Garnier Sleek and Shine, Trevor Sorbie curl conditioner (UK only, unfortunately)
Stylers: KCCC, AG Re:coil, TIGI mousse, but open to suggestions!
Gels: BRHG (my one and only)

With our hard water (we have some of the hardest water around) I was getting a number of symptoms. My hair was frizzy, even when wet, felt harsh, tangled easily, and once I started CG it got build-uppy really fast. When I finally figured out what the problem was, I started clarifying, using AO swimmer's shampoo (no sulfates) followed by an ACV rinse and DT about once a week. What a difference!

We just got our water softener installed today, so I did one last clarifier. I'm glad to be done with that! My skin already feels better with the soft water, nice and soft and not itchy at all! I can't say about my hair yet, because I just clarified, but I'm excited to see the difference :)
